Don't use "The UPS Store"
I figured I would post this to save you all some time and money. Don't ever use "The UPS Store". I went in to one of these to send a box via UPS. I had looked up the cost ahead of time on the web based on the size and weight. It came out to $34.08. So I go in there and they enter in the info and measure and weigh the box. And they say that will be $60 something. I say "oh I only need that shipped ground" They say that is ground! Long story short, I left, taking my box with me. Well, they fudged the size adding an inch to all three dimensions. But more importantly, I called UPS to complain about the store and UPS said that The UPS Stores are independent and can basically charge whatever they want. So in short: Don't use "The UPS Store". Instead, look up a "UPS Customer Center" on UPS.com and ship from there. They are an actual UPS owned location and use the same rates listed online.

I can't even relay the entire story, I am so pissed.
Today's Straight Bullshit would normally be a very long rant about how we had an outage on one of our high profile clients. I will give you the abridged version because I am too livid to go into more detail without actually quitting my job.
Outage happened. An email was going around to the tone of "What happened? How can we avoid this?" I added in "Well, if you even try to use the site, you get hosed... do they even bother to check it once they have pushed?"
Anh decided to start an email chain without me on it straight to the production people in Brazil.... who I am supposed to be working with on exactly this sort of thing. We convened to discuss around her cube. When I called her on it, she just put her head down and watched some videos, not even acknowledging that I was there. I tried to get her to explain what the situation was exactly. Also ignored.
Dave, the child boss, walks over and says "find out who I need to scream at for this." Mark said something about Brazil and the new platform, and then I said "well, if they would just QA their work when they are done, they'd notice that sites go down when they publish."
Dave stormed off to yell at people.
Anh freaked out at Mark (not me) about the fact that we just started WWIII.
I said "good."
Kemp and Mark said "Well, I can see both sides."
I said "Well, I can't because NO ONE FUCKING TELLS ME WHAT IS GOING ON...... ANH!!!"
No response. Like I am not even there.
I have no idea why Anh wants so badly to protect Brazil. I have told her square out that I do absolutely nothing here and that I hate my job. She just responds with "Don't tell Dave that." Everyone is confused as to what the story is and why she is reacting so violently to keep Dave away from knowing what is going on down there (in Brazil), and I really can't figure out why she has a producer who she clearly does not want involved with production.

Shake off your red leather jacket and crazy contact lenses: a big budget Thriller Musical is in the works. Chicago is ready to fling open its theater doors to a Michael Jackson monster-fest.
This is the answer to the Broadway's financial crisis: more Michael Jackson. And I'm for it — you can't put a price on this ticket that I wouldn't pay. According to the Chicago Tribune, The Nederlander Organization (large Chicagoan theater producers) have bought the musical rights to MJ's Thriller. Which means more money for penny-pinching MJ, even if they're just purchasing the title track. But as of right now, there's little news, and no creative team for us to pester with these important questions.
But MJ isn't completely removed from the project. According to The Observer the old Pop King, "will be personally and fully involved in the creation of the show." But god knows what that means, and do we trust his judgment at this time? Still zombies on stage, dancing the dance we all know and love, sounds like a win-win. And hopefully it will do so well that it'll come to save New York's Broadway blues.
There are so many people that are going to be excited about this, from the inmates over in the Philippines Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center to, well, everyone I know.
My only question is: when are the auditions, and should I shred my legwarmers crypt-cool style? And because yes, I'm this excited about it, here are many different Thriller videos.
Oh, lovely. I feel so reassured that although emails & account passwords were stolen, they have not detected any misuse of this information... on the Monster.com site. Not like anyone would use the same username, email, and password for other sites as well.
Oh, and as several other blogs have mentioned - no, they didn't bother to email the users to let them know about it; they just posted this "important security message" as a link on their site.

SO, On this blog, I have publicly said that I was an Obama voter, but not necessarily an Obama supporter. I think today is the day for me to go ahead and let that all go, and give in to Obama and do as he asks by doing what it takes to heal the nation with hope and action.
So, from here on out, I have his back, whether I agree with him or not. I do believe that he can do a better job than the last guy. I do believe that he will do things that make a difference. I do believe that it is important, as a nation, to have a president, not only of African-American descent, but every other type of person that there is as well. I believe that he is only the start. I believe that he is a good man, and a good father. I believe that he understands technology and how he can harness it to his advantage. Most of all, I believe that this nation believes, and that is good enough for me right now.
He has already started to act. I have seen him declare today a day of Renewal and Reconciliation:

He has already updated an improved the Whitehouse Website and it sucks considerably less than the last site, under Bush. It is my way to judge a company, a person, or an administration by their website. Obama has presented a clean and clear website that is easy to use and not distracting. There are no pop-up ads and no animated gifs, which Bush's site had, and that is a good thing. He is also using the site to do some really great things, that should help people feel closer to their government.
One significant addition to WhiteHouse.gov reflects a campaign promise from the President: we will publish all non-emergency legislation to the website for five days, and allow the public to review and comment before the President signs it. [more]
I hope that this is exactly the tone that he keeps throughout the next 8 years.
If he keeps up this pace, we may have change yet on the horizon. I'll be watching. And hoping.

WTF? New Law Could Keep Books Out Reach For Children
A federal law that will soon go into effect could have some startling consequences, including the possible banning of children from libraries unless certain books are pulled from the shelves.
Under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act books for children will have to be tested for lead.
The law is called the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act and it is designed to protect children all over the country from the dangers of lead.
Experts said there could be trace amounts of lead in books because of the ink. That's why the government wants all books, old and new, tested for lead. [more]

Plane Crash today
For those of you not following me on Twitter (which shows up over there --> on the blog), I have been following the plane crash that happened in the Hudson river all day.
I got a CNN Breaking News twitter while I was walking back into the building from lunch and immediately tuned into the news lines, twitter and flickr on the subject.
Short story is that a plan crashed in the Hudson river today and it was an A320, which holds somewhere in the neighborhood of 175 people. Everyone is off. Most are cold. A cople are hurt with fractures, but all are alive and easily to treat.
I am sure that you will all hear all about it, if you have not already, on the news tonight.
I am so happy that people are OK and that no one got hurt. Takeoff and landing are the worst parts for me and I am horrified that those people had to go through that, but so relieved that the pilot was a rock star and got everyone down ok.
I hope someone gives that guy a hug.

My Wil Wheaton excercse plan
So, I need to go to the gym more. I needed to figure out a way to motivate myself to go regularly and stay there and distract me while I am there. TV is good, music is better, but even then, I am staring at the clock the whole time.
I am also a fan of the author/actor that is Wil Wheaton and have been wanting to read his books for quite some time after meeting him at SDCC and reading his blog. He's really nice, and very funny, and makes me smile when I read about the adventures he has had, so I decided to download both of his audio books (which are incidentally sold by a friend of his who is a cast member on Heroes - the puppet master).
Anyway, I am at the gym on Thursday, trying to figure out how to get me through my workout, when I came up with a stroke of genius: I will listen to Wil! I actually overdid my workout to the point of pain because I was listening to him read his book to me. I have also committed to not listening to the book anywhere *BUT* the gym so that it motivates me to go. And let me just say that I am pissed that I am hurting from skiing this weekend because I really want to listen to the next chapter right now.
Once I get through his books, I will move on to other audio books, maybe re-listen to Neil reading his stuff again, but it will forever be known as the Wil Wheaton exercise plan.
P.S. I recommend the books highly and Wil's blog is a bright spot in my day so maybe it will be for you too. Also, you can follow him on twitter if you like.
Ah and Dave are at CES so there is a possibility that I may have 2 days of no bullshit.

re: Considering Twitter...
1. If you use your real name, people will be able to find you easily. Maybe you do or don't want that. ;-) I never use my real name because I don't want my mom searching for me. 2. all or nothing 3. you can set it so that only people who you approve can see your twitter feed. However, in your blog or facebook or whatever, they can't log in to get approval to see some sidebar thing, so you'd need to set it to everyone for those feeds to work. You'd need to look into that more, but I think they will display everything no matter who is looking at it.
Option B: you have 2 twitter feeds. One public for the world, and one private for drunk in Tahoe moments. Problem with that is that if you text message post, it's to a 40404 number so you can only identify your phone with one of those. However, usually, I post through the web, even on my phone, so as not to waste texts so you would have that option.
Option C: you could accept that everyone gets drunk in Tahoe and no one really cares. Even your boss. Just never say "at the beach" when you are "home sick" no matter what feed you are on.
Considering Twitter...
So, I'm wondering whether Twitter would help me manage the status-update protocol that's expected of my Facebook and Plaxo identities. I've seen others do this - one update on Twitter and it gets propagated to the various social networking sites as well.
But then I have to figure out... - Should I use a real name or alias in creating the username? - Can I decide which types of updates go to which groups of people, or is it an all-or-nothing kind of deal? - Can I control who sees my Twitter feed, or is it public for everyone who figures out my username?
See, problem is, there are things that I don't mind sharing with everyone. Going out of town til a certain date, cats did something strange, whatever. But then there are other things like "drunk off my ass in Tahoe" that I don't mind broadcasting to a subset of friends but wouldn't wanna share with all my colleagues.
So am I stuck with self-censorship (i.e. don't post anything I wouldn't want everyone to see) or is there another option? :-\

Ah. You thought I had forgotten, didn't you? Nope. I skipped yesterday because I didn't really want to deal with it, but I do have some updates.
1) Lunch yesterday - Sitting around the Tee Nee Thai table at lunch yesterday Dave was talking about something as the land of assholes. Then he mentioned Boson. I made some comment like "speaking of land of assholes" and Kemp said "you know where Dave is from, right?" I smirked.
Then Dave launches into some pride filled story about how he cut off some 70 year old woman while home in Boston so badly that he could hear her tires squeal and she stopped traffic up for quite some time as she sat there freaked out on the road. He was bragging about it as if it was the awesomest thing he did all break.
My comment, straight up and to his face: "Where'd you guys say that Dave was from again?"
2) Anh took over my accounts again without telling me - This started yesterday when I was in a meeting room filled with several members from several teams. Anh and another girl in the office who I am not very fond of to begin with start talking about why girl X was changing the short code on one of the accounts and how much that messes things up. Via text message I ask "why do I not know about this?" given that I am in charge of managing this stuff. I get in response "I'm just dealing with it." WTF?
Then I ask girl X for the terms and conditions for project A (again, after weeks of asking for them) and Anh sits there and shakes her head. Girl x asks what Anh is shaking her head for and Anh replies that we simply don't need them. I text "yes we do, Brazil is asking for them." She comes back with "no we don't" and then rolls on to the next topic.
Today, wile I am in the middle of a meeting asking Brazil where we are with things, Anh cuts in and asks about project a and project b and negotiates timelines and all sorts of other stuff with them that was a) on my list and she knew it and b)my job, not hers.
WTF?
3) Poor Kemp - So we (Kemp and I) are sitting here getting ready to go talk to a client on our weekly phone meeting. We had one yesterday so I was wondering if we even needed to have one. Anh butts in with "ask art guy A to come to that meeting and I will be there also."
WTF?
"Anh, it's really no big deal and we already went over everything yesterday so I think it will be 5 minutes."
"That's ok, I am going to all meetings involving that client from now on."
WTF?
So she shows up,sits there and types on her keyboard the whole time. The client gives us some great news about TV promotions they are going to start on the 19th as we wrap up. Perfect news! Keep in mind that Kemp has been kind of in the doghouse and probably could use the exposure of handing some good news to Dave.
AS we are trying to get off the phone, Anh gets up and bee lines out of the office. On the way out, Kemp leans in and says "she left so she can go hand the good news to Dave."
We get back to our area and Anh is in there not only announcing it to Dave, but also Ron, our CEO.

In order that I may further procrastinate doing things that *really* should be done by now, I have posted up the pics from my Birthday Party last night and the Madonna show I went to in November. i finally upgraded to firefox ver3.x today (dont ask why i took so long) and while checking out new plug ins i ran into this one here. its called cooliris and basically makes searching for photos on flickr, images.google, and the like much faster and more "interesting". basically it creates a wall of thumbnails from those pages and you can just zoom through them all so you dont have to wait for page loads or unnecessary html stuffs. it also goes ahead quite far and gets the next few pages ready for you. the thumbnails are pretty good quality, you can then click on them for a full size image, and then if you like you can go to the actual page it is from while still saving your place on the wall 0' photos. you can zoom slow or just fly through them and everything is set up rather intuitively.
i just installed it today so the final verdict is still out, but based on what i have seen sofar this thing is awesome. just check out the link if you are using firefox. my words dont do it justice. seriously. get it like now
A new mattress just arrived at my house. It is hugemongous. It's like princess-and-the-pea style big. It currently smells funny so I am waiting for my McDonald's breakfast to arrive at the house while it airs out.
After only sleeping for 4 hours, all I want to do is crawl into it and go back to sleep, but it is cold and smells funny, so I wait.
I have a million and a half pictures from the Madonna show that I am too tired to go through at the moment, so I will leave those for later.

New mattress!!!
So, for Christmas I recieved a coupon for a new mattress from Chris. We just went test driving and have made our purchase. It will arrive on Saturday and I could not be more excited about what we got: for those of you who have ever stated at a Westin hotel, we got the materss and boxspring that is known as "the Heavenly Bed."

10 New Year’s Resolutions for Geeks
Repeat after me: I hereby resolve that, in the new year, I...
1. Will not get into arguments with other geeks about the age-old PC vs. Mac or Windows vs. OS X vs. Linux questions, because nobody ever wins religious debates. And, besides, Macs suck.
2. Will wait until I have seen at least one full episode of Joss Whedon’s new TV series Dollhouse before I start writing letters to Fox begging them not to cancel it.
3. Will keep an open mind about the new Star Trek film and not prejudge it based on trailers that, let’s face it, were probably assembled by some Hollywood PR people who aren’t real Trek fans—why, they’ve probably never even been to a convention! I will further remember that eliminating prejudice is one of the tenets of the Federation.
4. Will try very hard not to make iPhone-less people feel inferior when I take my iPhone out around them, including when I’m eating lunch with my friends and/or coworkers who have been holding out because they don’t want to switch from Verizon. [Not that I am bitter.]
5. Will spread the gospels of XKCD and Penny Arcade to every geek person I know—some folks might not get the joke in every strip, but they are just too awesome not to share them.
6. Will follow @stephenfry, @JohnCleese, @wilw, @hodgman, @greggrunberg, @donttrythis (Adam Savage), @levarburton, @nasa, and @thinkgeek on Twitter. If I am not using Twitter I will finally realize what I’ve been missing and sign up right away. [Trust me on this one.]
7. Will allow for the possibility that the Watchmen movie will be good even if it is not 100% faithful to the comic books. I will remember that Batman Begins and The Dark Knight were awesome despite the liberties they took with the characters and storylines involved. If necessary I will keep repeating to myself "Alan Moore is not sacrosanct."
8. Will not feel bereft when Battlestar Galactica finally ends, by remembering that Caprica is coming in 2010, even though it will probably not be nearly as good, because let’s face it, lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place, though Esai Morales and Eric Stoltz are pretty good so you never know. Further, I will try not to be too disappointed at the reveal of the Last Cylon, though I reserve the right to yell "Lame!" at the TV screen.
9. Will not dwell on the plot holes in Lost, no matter how huge they may be, and just enjoy the show for the weird fun drama it is. I will remind myself that, even when it makes no sense at all, it’s still more watchable than roughly 80% of the other shows on in prime time. Plus it has Michael Emerson in it, and he’s awesome.
10. Will bring my kids to see X-Men Origins: Wolverine if they’re old enough, and, whoever I end up seeing it with, will not whisper comments to them or to anyone else about each violation of Marvel canon as it occurs.

Some thoughts and observations: 1) my love and support go out to Deanne and Alex, who lost a beloved member of their family already this year. I knew Mandy and she was awesome. I nearly threw up when i read the news and cried for her and for you. I hope that you are ok. Let me know if you need anything. I can't possibly help you right now, and no one knows that better than me, but I can tell you that I understand.
2) Dick Clarke is effed up! Poor guy. So sad.
3) 2009 will be better than 2008, and 2008 was not that bad. I will force it to be if I have to fight every day, uphill, for it.
4) It took about an hour in this new year for me to get on the internet. That says something. (It says that I have a problem.)
Shake off your red leather jacket and crazy contact lenses: a big budget Thriller Musical is in the works. Chicago is ready to fling open its theater doors to a Michael Jackson monster-fest.
