There's so many, I can't even start a multisession because I am listening to like 40 different songs in my head all at once. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!

Here's my essay on it.
If we really wanted to help, the solution is less about driving fewer hummers than paying for MASSIVE education programs in all other parts of the world to teach these people how not to breed like rabbits if you don't have enough food to feed them, how not to have unprotected sex so you don't get aids, etc. It would also mean more medical assistance to all of these people so deseases would be less of an issue. Then we can sit back and enjoy the even worsened overpopulation of the planet and watch them start to suck resources as well (not proud of what we consume, but a couple billion more people in africa and China would not exactly help the situation).
Point being: there's a problem with helpig people, there's a problem with not. It's never as clear as we see it over here. Solving one problem usually creates like 50 more. And really, it's under contention whether or not we are actually making a marketable difference in a trend of global warming and cooling that has been going on for the entire life of the planet. If the smart monkeys develop air conditioning, maybe it's new darwanism. It's ok with everyone that we killed off Neandertal, but when we out-survive others because we live in a place that affords our intelligence to develop further, people get all defensive. All point of view seem to be hypocritical (including mine). Which is why I don't like my species very much.
You either have to take the position that you want to save all humans, and planet be f&*^ed, orr you have to accept that we are damaging something that effects ALL other species. Saving humans kills off something like 50 new species a year and we may need to accept that people need to not be here in such abundance. I think it would be great if we could get rid of all the lame-ass monkeys who make bad decisions, but nature doesn't work that way so I am willing for it to be geographically based if it needs to be. Even if that means it's me that goes. Although, i'd be smart enough to get up and walk if necessary to get to more food or cooler climate.
OK, I know that pissed people off, but really folks, it's easy for us to have commentary on something that effects us not at all. if you want to worry about life, worry about all the other forms that we are killing (entire species) and then wonder if it is really worth increasing the already 6. something billion people already here. I think it's awefully species-centric....

I just want to say thanks to Chris. He's right, although I'm hoping raptors *don't* come for us. Global warming is about more than "just heating up the earth a few degrees." People (mostly children, if you read the article) are dying because of malnutrition, floods and the spread of malaria. We in the western world will just have to worry about turning up the air conditioning or perhaps paying a little more for fruits and veggies. People in the poorer countries, however, could be facing death.
And, before you're too hard on Russia, remember that the US (thanks to Bush) backed out of the Kyoto treaty a long time ago.
It's too bad the earth can't get back at us by hurting the people most responsible. Maybe it could just dry up some of those oil wells in Texas. :)

So, the one comment that I would make towards the Russia post is that they might mind when the sea level rises a couple inches/feet and 1/2 their land becoames underwater.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the thought of the people getting shoved up onto the mountains or being washed away (mmmmmmmmm Tool song in my head now), it's all the Orangutans that already have it so bad, and the kittens... we can't forget the kittens.
That said, love you guys, hope you don't die! You can always come over to my place - I have some air conditioning you can latch onto!

I prefer "Nature finds a way." Sometimes moving is not an option. Like when you live on an atoll 20 feet above sea level and possess nothing worth trading for beads or rocket launchers. I know it is often hard for western people who've known nothing but plenty to comprehend, but there are still people who are not integrated into the whole capitalistic economic system. I suppose they could paddle to another island, but I think all of the good ones are already taken. And the people on the good islands frequently don't like outsiders showing up looking for a place to crash (Remember the welcome Australia has been getting in the news for for giving to refugees over the past few years?). I suppose also that they could fight for new lands, the way people have been doing since we climbed out of the trees, but that seems kind of unenlightened. Maybe the 10% of the world that uses most of the world's resources could stop driving AssWagons that get 15mpg? Or denuding the third world of every resource that could be conceivably be turned into next year's Christmas presents? Oh wait, it's their right, they climbed to the top of the food chain. Why extend thought or compassion to the less enlightened when the status quo has served us so well lo these many years?

Hulk Pirate Sentenced
A New Jersey man who pleaded guilty to illegally copying and posting a digital version of summer SF movie Hulk on the Internet received a three-year probation and was fined, the Reuters news service reported. Kerry Gonzalez, who was 25 when he pleaded guilty in June, was ordered to serve six months confinement in his home along with the probation. He also must pay a $2,000 fine and $5,000 in restitution to Universal, the company that produced and distributed the movie, the wire service reported.
Gonzalez was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, where he pleaded guilty to one count of copyright infringement, the news service reported.

Doctor Who Coming Back as a TV Series
BBC News reports that the cult sci-fi series Doctor Who will return to TV screens. The much-awaited comeback will be produced for BBC One by BBC Wales and written by the acclaimed Welsh dramatist Russell T. Davies.
"Doctor Who is one of the BBC's most exciting and original characters. He's had a good rest and now it's time to bring him back!," says Davies.
"This is very early days and it is unlikely anything will be on screen for at least two years but it is very exciting and I can't wait to get started," added BBC Wales' Head of Drama Julie Gardner who will act as executive producer.
The first Doctor Who, played by William Hartnell, was first seen on 23 November, 1963. He was followed by seven more, before the series was cancelled in 1989. Although Sylvester McCoy was the last actor to play the Doctor in the TV series, Paul McGann recreated the role in a TV movie version in 1996.
Although little has so far been revealed about how the new Doctor Who series will look, or who will be given the starring role, the writer says the new series "will be fun, exciting, contemporary and scary."
BBC said it is far too early in the day to discuss possible storylines, characters, villains or who might play Doctor Who.
DREW GERACI LEAVES CROSSGEN, RETURNS TO DC
Drew Geraci has left CrossGen Entertainment and returned to DC Comics, the inker informed The Continuum.
Geraci's departure is expected to be one of many from CrossGen, which has yet to officially respond to reports that it has restructured and laid off staff.
Geraci's first work for DC will be Batgirl #48, a fill-in issue. His first DC work in almost three years will be inking newcomer Jean-Jacques Dzialowski.
"This past summer, DC's proven that they're on a winning streak and I'mÊgrateful to return to the fold", Geraci said. "(Editor) Michael Wright and I have been wanting to work together again for some time."
At CrossGen's Geraci's most recent work was on Route 666, Way of The Rat and Sojourn.
"I'll miss working with Tony (Bedard) and Karl (Moline) on Route 666 and all the other mega-talented friends I've made at CrossGen. I wish them much success in the future," Geraci said.
Geraci won the CrossGen Fan Awards for Favorite Inker.

CrossGen restructures
Website reports comic book publisher lays off, changes structure
The Pulse website is reporting that Tampa, FL-based CrossGen Entertainment has restructured its employee and production model for producing comic books. The publisher of numerous titles including RUSE, NEGATION and the pirate-themed EL CAZATOR, CrossGen has reportedly switched from a salary-based employee model to one where their artists and writers are employed as freelancers. Additionally, The Pulse reports that as many as 20 to 25 employees were laid off and that RUSE penciller Butch Guice has departed CrossGen. [

UNDERWORLD 2 is a go
Variety reports that a deal has been struck with UNDERWORLD screenwriter Danny McBride and the film's director, Len Wiseman, to begin work on a sequel. Screen Gems, UNDERWORLD's distributor, and Lakeshore Entertainment, the film's production company, want to begin production on UNDERWORLD 2 as soon as possible.
Now that the original film's writer and director are coming back, all that remains is to get Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman back. Since Beckinsale is engaged to Wiseman, chances are pretty good that something will be worked out.
Screen Gems also has interest in making an UNDERWORLD prequel at a later time.

What passes for street cred in a game shop
What the hell are 3.5 rules?
They are the recently-released revision to the Third Edition Dungeons & Dragons rules. The broad strokes of v3 haven't changed, but some of the details (e.g. class abilities, spells, combat) have been
cleaned up.
The revision, while a positive product overall IMO, was released by Wizards more out of a motivation to sell everybody the core books again rather than out of some sort of editorial imperative.
And when did Wizards of the Coast start owning D&D anyway?
Several years ago, ~1997 if memory serves. WotC bought TSR. And now, WotC is owned by Hasbro, who bought the company in 1999 or 2000.

So I was enjoying the first weekend free of camping or diving or other planned events by sleeping in and basically not doing much of anything, when I happened to run into a friend of mine online. In the course of chatting away, she mentioned an online comic called
Queen of Wands which I spent most of yesterday reading. I heartily reccommend it if your sense of humor runs toward the dark, deviant, and twisted. If you don't like bad words, deviancy, or ren fairs, stay away. On another reccommendation, I have spent most of the rest of my waking hours this weekend reading
Something Positive which is even darker than QoW. I have a strong suspicion that Davan, the main character of SP, is channeling for me. Make of that what you will. ;-) Although Davan seems to spend a lot more time playing D&D than I do. What the hell are 3.5 rules? And when did Wizards of the Coast start owning D&D anyway? The things I have to learn from online cartoons. Oh, evidently the author, R. K. Milholland, got one of his inspirations,

Weekend Mayhem
So, for those of you wondering: my weekend -
Underworld on Friday - I think I am one of the only people in the world that liked it. It was decent enough for a comic book movie - the Cinamatography was beautiful and the story line was pretty cool, just don't expect good acting - I think I want to see it again sometime to fully make up my mind about it, but I liked it overall.
Cyberfest - was really cool. Wendy and Dave a rad rave buddies. Good music, good fun, good drive!
Now and Zen Fest - after we finally got there, it was really cool. Duran Duran puts on a great show. Loved it.

Today, I learned about Paraceratherium, which was the largest land mammal that ever lived, and resembles a very big, muscular giraffe. It is an ancient Rhino.
Here's a fact file:
Paraceratherium (similar to Indricotherium) is a large, extinct, hornless rhinoceros. It was one of the largest land mammals. Adults were about 26 feet (8 m) long, 18 feet (5.5 m) tall, and weighed about 15-20 tons. The skull was 4.25 feet (1.3 m) long. This herbivore ate leaves and twigs from the tops of trees. It had four teeth; two tusk-like front teeth in the top jaw, pointing down and two on the bottom pointing forwards. This extinct ungulate (hoofed mammal) had three toes on each foot and lived from the Oligocene to the early Miocene (roughly 30 million years ago) in central Asia (Pakistan, Mongolia and China). Paraceratherium was first found by English paleontologist C. Forster Cooper in Pakistan in 1910. Classification: Order Perissodactyla (odd-toed ungulates), Family Hyrachyidae (odd-toed ungulates between tapirs and rhinos).

Disney Back To Fairy Roots
Disney will be returning to its fairy-tale roots with a slate of fantasy-themed movies, USA Today reported. "I noticed that for an organization known for fairy tales, we hadn't done one since Beauty and the Beast," David Stainton, the studio's recently appointed chief of feature animation, told the newspaper. "It's something that the audience wants and we can uniquely present. What makes fairy tales significant are the very deep themes that resonate through them and touch everybody."
Among the upcoming films: a comedic animated Rapunzel, due around 2007; Pretty Ugly, an adult-aimed comedy about a womanizing jerk who loses his looks and must earn a kiss from the girl he scorned to regain them; Uncle Stiltskin, a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin; and The Frog Prince, the newspaper reported.
Also in the pipeline: Miramax's Ella Enchanted, opening next April, starting Anne Hathaway as a young girl living in olden days who must use her wits to foil a curse of obedience, and Dimension Films' Brothers Grimm, starring Heath Ledger and Matt Damon as the fairy-tale creators.

Atari has announced that its new Dungeons & Dragons Heroes video game will ship for the Xbox on Sept. 23, the GameSpot Web site reported. This is the first Dungeons & Dragons game for a current-generation console platform, the site reported.
Heroes features offline four-player play in seven environments in a story-driven campaign with a choice of four classic classes: fighter, wizard, cleric and rogue, the site reported. Originally planned for the GameCube and PlayStation 2, Dungeons & Dragons is now an Xbox exclusive.

It's not a sound that anyone can hear but by definition it is sound. Vibrations through an elastic medium typically a gas or liquid. It's the same thing just bigger and lower. The "sounds" previously reported by this publication are, in fact, not sounds. They are "shockwaves". To call that low-frequency vibration "a sound" is like calling the North American continent "some dirt". To stretch the definition of sound well beyond the range of what any sentient being could hear serves no purpose but confusion.
I play bass. I'm in familiar territory here.
Finally, to address those of you who would respond by saying that it was written in a scientific journal, so it must be true. It is a well-known fact that people who write for science journals are those same people who think that velcro instead of shoelaces is a good idea.

A man in North Carolina Saturday managed to pay for $150 of groceries with a $200 bill. He was given $50 in change, and was long gone before the clerk at the Food Lion market noticed that the bill was bogus. Oops. Not only does the U.S. Mint not print a $200 bill, but the fake $200 had a picture of President Bush on the front, and slogans on the back including "We like broccoli" and "USA deserves a tax cut." Plus, a Food Lion representative said its policy is not to accept any bills over $100. No word on whether the store clerk still has a job.

So, I in no way want to make a big mushy thing out of this, but I just noted the date.
I think it's kind of important to do so each year, and not because of the loss. Really, the amount of damage that was done here was nothing when compared to what the rest of the people in other parts of the world have to deal with. We are really spoiled brats who have it way better than everyone else and take it for granted. A lot of countries have that and worse happen on a regular basis - which does not make it right, but it makes us pretty lame for making such a big deal out of it when we do very little to help stop it elsewhere.
I think the date should be noted to remind us of that. To remind us that we have it really good. That nothing in our lives is really all that bad when compared to what it could be. We should wake up. We should live with gratitude and wonder. We should appreciate our safety. We should appreciate our educations, our land, and our freedom. We should appreciate eachother.
So, as you go through your day, note the date and be greatful that that event was an isolated incident. Take a moment and be happy with your life.

CrossGen Entertainment has provided a teaser image from artist George Perez for CALL TO ARMS, a new project. CALL TO ARMS may be linked to the company's secret, company-wide crossover coming out next year called THE WAR. CrossGen had only mentioned their plans for this event during San Diego Comic-Con, and with the image of seven CrossGen characters appearing together, this could be the opening battle before the start of the war.

Arrrh! The hit Disney movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl will come out on DVD on Dec. 2 in a two-disc set, the studio announced. Starring Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, the Pirates DVD will feature deleted scenes, a gag reel, audio commentary by Depp, a "making-of" featurette, additional filmmaker actor commentary and more, the studio said.
The DVD set will carry a suggested retail price of $29.99. A separate VHS version of the film will also debut, with a suggested retail price of $24.99.

BOMBAY (Reuters) - Busy Indians are jumping the temple lines during one of Bombay's biggest Hindu festivals by making their offerings through SMS.
For $1.10, plus the message charge, devotees can SMS PUJA (prayer) to the BPL Mobile cellular operator to have prayers said for them at the city's most popular temple to the elephant-headed god Ganesh.
BPL says more than 5,000 people have used the service -- avoiding lines of thousands of people outside temples -- since it was launched Sunday at the start of the annual 10-day festival for Ganesh.
"It helps our subscribers get some sort of a pious feeling," said Krishna Angara, chief operating officer of BPL Mobile, which has almost a million customers in Bombay's Maharashtra state.
After the prayer, the temple sends the BPL customer a receipt, special offerings and a portrait of Ganesh.

Actors Test For Batman
Warner Brothers and director Christopher Nolan will test several hot new actors for the title role in the studio's proposed fifth Batman movie, which is scheduled to start shooting in February 2004, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sources told the trade paper that during the next three days, several young actors are expected to test for the role, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Christian Bale, Joshua Jackson, Cillian Murphy, Henry Cavill and Eion Bailey.
Meanwhile, sources said that Hugh Dancy (King Arthur) may test if his schedule permits and he is able to shave the beard his Arthur character, Galahad, is sporting, the trade paper reported.

Let's see: I drove past Tenaya Lake and under the shadow of Carahadras (that's what I internally refer to the large red mountain facing you as come down the straightaway before the last main curve in the Tioga pass) and through the high desert and alpine meadows of the Mono Basin to get to Mamoth Lakes. I listened to the yipping of coyotes under a clear, star filled sky in Inyo National Forest. I hauled a sack weighing roughly 1/3 my body weight over ~14 miles of rugged terrain at high (8000-10000 feet) altitudes. I clambered up a 1/4 mile long boulder field to gaze upon beautiful Garnet Lake (9680 feet elevation). I helped fend off a black bear from our camp, although it later returned to feast on some food that did not make it into the bear cannisters before the initial feint and had to be chucked away. Got to listen to one of the bears (Momma brought the kids) chew through a can of chicken. I braved rain, hail, thunder, lightning, and a distinct lack of oxygen. Watched the stars in the cold mountain air at night until I got tired and crawled into my tent, which was perched on the edge of a low cliff. The Milky Way looked like a faint cloud stretching over the roof of the world. I sat by the side of Garnet Lake at dawn and looked up at Mt Ritter and Mt Banner, which are like giant incisors cutting into the sky, with bits of snow and/or glacier hanging off the side. I saw a brilliant rainbow stretch from one side of the lake to the other after the precipitation ended. I crossed over a 10000+ high pass to see
another beautiful alpine valley. After decending a few miles, we camped in a valley recently departed by elves with Ritter and Banner behind us to the southwest, the Minarets to the southeast, and Volcanic Ridge to the north. Shadow Lake was visible from atop a huge, smooth spine of (I think) granite that our camp was nestled beneath. A river meandered through a meadow that was clearly a flood plain in wetter times of the year and made waterfall after waterfall through the rock as it descended down to Shadow Lake. Saw an amazing sunset where the clouds looked like they were aflame before settling in for the evening and rising to see the sun explode over the ridge behind Shadow Lake in the morning. Hiked down through a rugged canyon with steep waterfalls (San Joaquin River, I think) before ascending a short ways up the dry canyon back to our start point. Said goodbye to Inyo/Mamoth and drove back through Hot 'N Flat to the Bay Area (about 6 hours from Inyo to Redwood City). Made a new friend. Instructed a toddler in new phrases, like "judicial system."
