Anyone who has known me for any amount of time knows that I've always harbored a life-long ambition to start an airline. If I was daydreaming at school or work, chances are I was daydreaming about starting an airline and all of the details like what food it would have and what the livery would be like. Well as fate would have it, I'm finally living that dream. I'm starting an airline.



Since last August I have been part of the founding team at Virgin America. In fact I was the 79th employee. We're already closing on 200. In the months that I have been there I have been able to take part in the creation of what I know will become one of the biggest milestones in airline history.

My official role is head of interactive marketing (aka the web guy) but I have been in pricing meetings, given my two cents about routes, interviewed people for roles throughout the company, and witnessed the creation of something I am humbled to be a part of.

I've also never worked so hard in my life. A startup is a startup, regardless of the industry and I, like everyone else in the company, wear multiple hats. It has been an emotional journey too, with tentative DoT rejections, constant jabs from most of the legacy carriers, and the ever changing state of the US airline industry.

But this week marked the most significant moments in my time at Virgin America. We revealed our cabin and in-flight amenities for the first time. This is what we've all been working towards. This is what it's all about. This is what I've wanted to tell you all about since I started working there but, for obvious reasons, was not able to.

The most revolutionary In-Flight Entertainment system in the country (one might argue the world.) The most beautiful planes (inside and out) that I have ever seen. The most comfortable seats I have ever had the pleasure of sitting in. This is going to change the way people fly. This is going to set the new standard.

But you might never get to enjoy it.

For reasons that don't bear explaining here (if you want to read about it, go here) the Department of Transportation is having trouble granting us our right to fly. The tentatively rejected our application on December 28th and we replied to the rejection last week.

For 18 straight days before that I, and some dedicated colleagues, worked on a campaign to let the public know about us and our situation, and to invite them to help. The end result was letVAfly.com. We created the site to show people what we're all about and allow them to help join our fight. Check it out.

So I'm asking you to help. Sign the petition, write to congress, spread the word. Send this link to everyone you know...EVERYONE. Email it to friends, family, colleagues; post it on your intranet at work, post it on your blog or myspace or whatever. There's a lot at stake here.

Yeah, skip it. The only great thing about it was Jennifer Hudson, apparently from American Idol fame. It was relatively well acted and the plot was pretty ok, but it wasn't amazing, the music is tired and not sit on the edge of your seat, and it gets confused frequently about wherther it's amovie about music or a musical (only 3 instances of people breaking out in song at one another, at really awkward times, but no other musical inclination).

Anyway, I'd pass, unless you are really into it.

Lots of folks have been working on cool new user interfaces for years now, but it seems the general public does not get to use them until Apple makes a new product.

Movies I have seen recently and reccomendations there-in (quickly because I finaly have a minute to do this in, and really only a minute as I am sick and exhausted and would like to sleep soon):

Pan's labrynth - Good movie. All in Spanish. Kind of violent at times. Not for kids. CG was really great for the fanatsy parts. Reccommended.

Children of Men - really well done. Good story line. Very violent at times. I don't think I would see it again, but I am glad I saw it. Most people I know would like this movie.

Perfume - Good story until the last 5 minutes, which were just weird for me (for those of you who know my commentary on the 9th gate, it's pretty much the same). acting is good, cnemetography was excellent. I'd reccommend it. Just don't be surprsed when it turns out totally differently than you thought it would.

So, many of you know that Virgin America, where Alex now works, is petitioning the DOT again to let them fly. They need our help. If you go to their website, you can send pre-made letters to congressmen and the DOT, sign the petition to let them fly, and check out a video of what the airline has to offer. The awesomeness of the in-seat enterainment (including seat to seat chat, on demand food ordering, video, and music) make me want to have the option to fly them. Plus, maybe Alex will get me a discount :-).

Anyway, if you have time, please check this out. If you agree that they should be allowed a chance to get off the ground, please sign the petition and write to your congress people (it took me 2 minutes this morning to do all of that), and if you really want to help Alex out, please post something on your blog and ask others to do the same. They have banners, etc there to help you out.

It's official. Hell has frozen over.

Yvonne De Carlo, the beautiful star who played Moses' wife in The Ten Commandments but achieved her greatest popularity on TV's The Munsters, has died, the Associated Press reported. She was 84. De Carlo died of natural causes Jan. 8 at the Motion Picture & Television facility in suburban Los Angeles, longtime friend and television producer Kevin Burns told the AP. [more]

So ... I think that this latest move by Steve Jobs (yes, it is his decision) is just more proof of what a dick the man can be, but ... if you have a trademark, you must defend it, or you lose it.  That's a fact.

If you do a Google search for "iPhone -Apple", you'll find that there have been other companies using the mark iPhone for several different products.  (e.g. http://www.comwave.net/CDN/iPhone/whatisiphone.htm , http://iphone.com/ )  If they had paid Cisco to license the mark ... they would have to show the ™ symbol AND they would have a line at the bottom of the pages that said Cisco owned the mark.

Steve Jobs realized that Cisco was trying to sell him something that he could get for free.  He's a dick for deciding not to sign the deal without telling anyone, but ... Cisco doesn't have a case if they haven't already sued everyone else using the name.

The worst part is ... IT'S NOT A GOOD NAME!  It's far more appropriate for these little run-in-the-basement-of-their-mother's-house companies to use the name, because it is a cheap rip off of an overused theme.  Why can't Apple come up with any good names anymore?  iWeb?  Sucks.  MacBook Pro?  Give me a break.  Mac Pro?  WTF?

The brightest comet in decades is unexpectedly now visible. The most optimistic predictions have Comet McNaught (C/2006 P1) shortly becoming one of the brightest comets of the past century. For the next few days, its short tail and bright coma can be spotted with the unaided eye close to the Sun and near the horizon in both evening and morning skies. This dramatic picture of the comet shining through cloudy skies was taken near sunset on January 7 from Bad Mergentheim, Germany. [see it]

Gaming Web site 1up.com reported a rumor that a massively multiplayer online game based on the SCI FI Channel original series Battlestar Galactica is in the works. According to the site, a listing recently appeared on the EB Games Web site for an Xbox 360 MMO game published by Vivendi, which owns 20 percent of NBC Universal, the parent company of SCI FI Channel (and SCIFI.com).

Vivendi told the site that it is "looking into" the listing, but did not comment any further. The title has since been removed from the EB Games site. [via]

According to Variety, Adult Swim's popular animated series Aqua Teen Hunger Force will head to the big screen this March. The release is set to be in over 800 theaters across the country.

The film centers on the origins of the Hunger Force characters Meatwad, Frylock and Master Shake and an immortal piece of exercise equipment threatening the balance of galactic peace.

The film is 86 minutes long and was written, produced and directed by co-creators Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis. [more]

A British bookmaker is taking bets on whether boy wizard Harry Potter will die in the upcoming book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, as well as who the murderer might be, according to The New York Times. Speculation that the lead character in J.K. Rowling's popular book series might die has been rampant since the title of the seventh and final book was announced.

In London yesterday, Rupert Adams, a spokesman for the bookmaker, William Hill, said that "J. K. mentioned that Harry might be killed off." Adams added that the evil wizard Voldemort is the odds-on favorite to be the killer, with odds at 4 to 5. Other popular candidates include Harry's best friend Ron Weasley, his nemesis Draco Malfoy and Harry himself, all at 6 to 1 odds. The bookmaker is also accepting bets on whether Ron will marry fellow student Hermione Granger; whether the two will have a child named Harry; and whether Ron will kill Draco in a duel.

All bets will be settled when the book is released next year. [via]

In a post on his personal blog, author Neil Gaiman said that he's been getting questions about whether he's working on the script for a sequel to the horror film Silent Hill with director Christophe Gans and screenwriter Roger Avary, but he is not involved in the project.

"I'm afraid that I don't think I am," Gaiman wrote. "I mean, it's the first thing I've ever heard of it, and I'm sure that if they make a sequel Roger would want to write it himself. I am writing Black Hole with Roger (we're one draft in right now), and we already wrote next year's Beowulf. If I get home to find an invitation to write Silent Hill 2 with Roger is waiting for me, I'll let you all know, but for right now I think it's a discredited Internet rumour."

The story arose from an interview with Gans posted on the French DVD site DVD Rama. Since the interview was pubished in French, the report of Gaiman's involvement may have been misinterpreted. [via]

George Lucas on Dec. 29 said that filming of the long-awaited fourth Indiana Jones movie will begin next year, the Associated Press reported. [more]

Brittany Murphy, the Happy Feet star who will voice the title character in the upcoming animated Tinker Bell, told SCI FI Wire that there was just no way she would turn down the part. The straight-to-DVD fantasy movie will explore what Disney's signature fairy is like when she's not flitting about with Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. [more]

Ian McKellen will provide the voice of the narrator in Matthew Vaughn's romantic fantasy Stardust, based on the book by Neil Gaiman, according to The Hollywood Reporter. McKellen joins a cast which already includes Claire Danes, Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Charlie Cox. McKellen is recording his part in Los Angeles during the post-production stage of the film, which wrapped production in the fall.

The film centers on a young man who promises his beloved that he will retrieve a fallen star (played by Danes) and ventures into the faerie realm, where he encounters witches, goblins, gnomes, talking animals and evil trees. Stardust opens July 27. [via]
