From the WTF files: Scentstories fro Fabreeze
OK, I *just* saw this on TV and had to run in here and check the website to see if it was for real. Yep. They have a SMELL CD player. I shit you not.
"The Scentstories player and disc themes work much like a music CD player. Just insert one of the themed discs and push play. The player then rotates through five scents on each disc, one by one with a new scent every 30 minutes. The player shuts off automatically after all five scents have been played. You can stop the player or skip through the scent tracks at any time. Together, the Scentstories player and disc create a new-to-the-world scent experience."
And somehow,
Shania Twain is involved... and they have
different discs, like music discs. I am so confused why this is necessary (in the hunter-gatherer sense).

I'll smoke you a kipper, because you'll be back for breakfast. You're the cult television show quoting, user account deleting, soap loathing IT Manager.
Something in your childhood has made you the way you are. You've been hired to provide a service to everyone else in the office - you make the computers run, and you make them run well. You've streamlined everything; you've removed all the viruses and installed all the firewalls. The only trouble - the only hole in your veneer of digital perfection - is the way you laugh at everyone.
If someone doesn't know UNIX, you laugh at them. If they lose their password, they laugh at them. If they visit a website using Microsoft Internet Explorer and their computer succumbs to an Internet worm, you laugh. Then you take a swig of your Coke, and with another hearty chuckle tell all your friends on IRC about the idiots you have to deal with.
Maybe it makes you feel better about yourself, although let's face it, you don't need help in that department. You're great, you. Fantastic like burning cool. If only those luddite office fools would let you play Unreal Tournament in peace.

They're a funny old bunch, those latter day saints. Rather than picking names from their heritage, or the Bible, the Utah Mormons tend to make them up. We can understand why you might be jealous of names like these. After all, they are far more interesting and exciting than your own. Luckily, help is at hand with the Mormon Name Generator; simply indicate your first name, last name and your gender preference below, and we'll Mormonise your moniker.

Which Historical Lunatic Are You?
Which Historical Lunatic Are You?From the fecund loins of Rum and Monkey.
You are Charles VI of France, also known as Charles the Mad or Charles the Well-Beloved!
A fine, amiable and dreamy young man, skilled in horsemanship and archery, you were also from a long line of dribbling madmen. King at 12 and quickly married to your sweetheart, Bavarian Princess Isabeau, you enjoyed many happy months together before either of you could speak anything of the other's language. However, after illness you became a tad unstable. When a raving lunatic ran up to your entourage spouting an incoherent prophecy of doom, you were unsettled enough to slaughter four of your best men when a page dropped a lance. Your hair and nails fell out. At a royal masquerade, you and your courtiers dressed as wild men, ending in tragedy when four of them accidentally caught fire and burned to death. You were saved by the timely intervention of the Duchess of Berry's underskirts.
This brought on another bout of sickness, which surgeons countered by drilling holes in your skull. The following months saw you suffer an exorcism, beg your friends to kill you, go into hyperactive fits of gaiety, run through your rooms to the point of exhaustion, hide from imaginary assassins, claim your name was Georges, deny that you were King and fail to recognise your family. You smashed furniture and wet yourself at regular intervals. Passing briefly into erratic genius, you believed yourself to be made of glass and demanded iron rods in your attire to prevent you breaking.
In 1405 you stopped bathing, shaving or changing your clothes. This went on until several men were hired to blacken their faces, hide, jump out and shout "boo!", upon which you resumed basic hygiene. Despite this, your wife continued sleeping with you until 1407, when she hired a young beauty, Odette de Champdivers, to take her place. Isabeau then consoled herself, as it were, with your brother. Her lovers followed thick and fast while you became a pawn of your court, until you had her latest beau strangled and drowned.
A severe fever was fended off with oranges and pomegranates in vast quantities, but you succumbed again in 1422 and died. Your disease was most likely hereditary. Unfortunately, you had anywhere up to eleven children, who variously went on to develop capriciousness, great cruelty, insecurity, paranoia, revulsion towards food and, in one case, a phobia of bridges.

Prison or Work?
Just in case you get the two mixed up, this should make things a bit clearer:
IN PRISON...you spend the majority of your time in an 8X10 cell.
AT WORK....you spend the majority of your time in a 6X8 cubicle.
IN PRISON...you get three meals a day.
AT WORK....you only get a break for one meal and you pay for it.
IN PRISON...you get time off for good behavior.
AT WORK....you get more work for good behavior.
IN PRISON...the guard locks and unlocks all the doors for you.
AT WORK....you must carry around a security card and open all the doors for yourself.
IN PRISON...you can watch TV and play games.
AT WORK....you get fired for watching TV and playing games.
IN PRISON...you get your own toilet.
AT WORK....you have to share with some idiot who pees on the seat.
IN PRISON...they allow your family and friends to visit.
AT WORK....you can't even speak to your family.
IN PRISON...the taxpayers pay all expenses with no work required.
AT WORK....you get to pay all the expenses to go to work and then they deduct taxes from your salary to pay for prisoners.
IN PRISON...you spend most of your life inside bars wanting to get out.
AT WORK....you spend most of your time wanting to get out and go inside bars.
IN PRISON...you must deal with sadistic wardens.
AT WORK....they're called managers

re: Blog Issues
Thanks for looking into that Kev!
With regard to #2, I still think something is wrong with the date.
I tookout the +1.
I put Wendy's birthday back to today's date.
It should have envoked code:
else if (days == 0) {
document.write("It's" + description);
}
But it didn't. It envoked code:
else {
document.write(description);
}
And only wrote "Wendy's Birthday" instead of "It's Wendy's Birthday"
Also, this was all working fine, with +1 intact, until fairly recently.
Feel free to test whenever you want if you have any ideas. I think it would have told me that it was Wendy's birthday yesterday with this code, and in fact, it did, even with the +1 (which wasn't applicable if the date was off), which is why I forwarded her Birthday date...
*Sigh* this sucks - thanks for your help - you rock.
Re: Blog Issues
1) It stopped listing the archive for the current month. Go look over to the right. There's no august.
I tried several things, to no avail...
...so I have a support request in to the Blogger folks now.
Re: Blog Issues
Sorry, N; I meant to get to this sooner:
2) The countdown to party script skips "only two days until".
It does that 'cause of the following code in the javascript:
...
if (days > 1) {
document.write(days + 1 + " Days until " + description);
}
else if (days == 1) {
...
Follow the logic: If
days is greater than 1 (i.e. 2+), write out "
days plus one days until
the event," otherwise run the one-day-until-event logic.
Remove the +1 from
days + 1 and I think that'll fix it.
I'm going to hold off on doing that myself until after we're done celebrating Wendy's birthday (
Happy Birthday, Wendy!) and I can enter some test data (to make sure *I* followed the logic okay). :-)

Blog Issues
OK, I need geek help (not such a nerd girl after all)...
2 problems with the blog. And they both have to do with dates.
1) It stopped listing the archive for the current month. Go look over to the right. There's no august. But if you click on one of the other ones and type in the August part, it shows up. So it is archiving, just not showing it.
See?
I am going to do what all bug reporters do, and say "I didn't change anything that would make it do that". But it's completely possible that I did, by accident and didn't know. Or, I guess, one of the other administrator monkeys could have done it when goofing with things, but they usually don't play in there unless I ask for it.
ok, problems 2) The countdown to party script skips "only two days until". Thursday, it correctly said that it was 3 days until Wendy's birthday, but Friday it said only one day. It counts down totally correctly until it gets to 2. On Friday, I pushed the date of Wendy's birthday back one day to see if that would make it say 2 days, but no, it went from 1 to 3. The following day it claims that it is her birthday so it doesn't even just stay stuck on 1 day for a couple days, it just skips 2 entirely.
No clue.
Anyway, if any of you peeps think you know or can fix said problems (probably in some JavaScript somewhere) lemme know. I can either do it or make you an admin while you fix it, but it's driving me insane.

Re: Which Famous Homosexual Are You?
I got Eleanor Roosevelt too:
Eleanor Roosevelt! Nice to see you.
A Roosevelt yourself, you married your fifth cousin Franklin; despite the obvious incestuous overtones, your six kids were happy and healthy.
When Franklin got elected, you became perhaps the most controversial first lady ever - you spoke out for the rights of women; for the rights of the poor; for world peace. You were even a member of a union while your husband was in office - and when he died, you were the head of the UN Commission on Human Rights.
All of which is pretty kick ass, but to top things off you had a hot and steamy relationship with the lesbian journalist Lorena Hickok, who was so madly in love with you that she halted her career for you. Unfortunately, you couldn't give up your public life that easily - leaving her heartbroken.
Bitch.

Dead Teenager Kept in Home 36 Years
HANOI (Reuters) - The family of a 17-year-old Vietnamese boy who died 36 years ago kept his body in their home after a fortune teller told relatives they had buried the teenager alive by mistake.
The boy's family thought he had died in 1968 of illness, but a herbal medicine man said told the father his son was still alive after the burial, the Ho Chi Minh City Police newspaper said on Tuesday.
Stricken with remorse, the father dug up the body and displayed it in a glass-covered coffin, keeping it in the family home in southern An Giang until he recently confessed the macabre secret to a police news reporter.
The newspaper ran a photo of the dead boy's brother posing with his arms folded next to the coffin of his sibling. The body of the boy had not decomposed, the report said.

Re: Weird links with words and colours in the mind
Hm, ok
Well, the year looks like a circle in my head, and it is sort of a full color wheel. Months have colors, like October is this beautiful firey burnt orange color and January is a beautiful light blue...
Places have colors - like Paris is pink, and aweful shade of blazing pink. London is a soft brown that is really comforting. San Fran is a light purple color most of the time. New York tends to be yellow.
Full peices of music often have a color association as well, but I don't see every note as a color as some people do; although that would certainly save me some money on recreational endeavors.
People change sometimes. Some people are pretty constant.
You, Kevin, are always a dark blue.
Coalee is the most beautiful forrest green and Sean is a deep Ocean blue.
Carl is a light Tan.
Esther is cargo green.
Wendy is gold with sparkles, like the cool little things you light up and wave around on New Years make.
Dave is a blue black.
Jon is a burnt red most of the time - although he fluctuates a lot.
Steph also changes colors a lot, but she's usually some shade of purple.
Chris is generally some shade of green, usually light green.
Does that answer the question?
Re: Weird links with words and colours in the mind
I actually associate people with distinct colors, as well as a few other things.
Any particulars you'd care to share? I'm curious. :-)

People with synaesthesia often say that letters, words and numbers have innate colours. Even when tested years later, their associations remain consistent. But no one really knows why or how these odd associations form. [

Well, between many *really* great offers like 2.99% for the life of the balance transfer, I have managed to get rid of nearly all of my high interest debt. I think my highest interest rate is only 7.99% at the moment, which is great news. I'll have all the high interest stuff paid off withing 2 months I think and then I can breathe a little easier.
Just thought I'd share the good news!

A piece of the Sun is set to fall to Earth and be captured by Hollywood stunt pilots in a tricky mid-air manoeuvre, NASA announced on Thursday.
A capsule filled with stardust will be dropped into the atmosphere from NASA's Genesis spacecraft on 8 September.
Genesis has collected charged particles from the Sun's outermost layer for about 27 months since its launch in 2001. Scientists believe its quarry will reveal the chemical composition of the cloud from which the Sun and planets condensed 4.5 billion years ago. [

AUSTIN, Texas - Just a few miles from George W. Bush's former office at the state Capitol, a panel of religious experts weighed a question with relevance to many people of faith: How would Jesus vote?
It's a complex topic that can't be boiled down to simple political terms, said religious leaders who attended a Texas Faith Network conference in Austin on Tuesday. Many at the conference voiced concerns that the religious right dominates discussions of faith and morality in politics. They complained that issues such as abortion and gay marriage seem to take priority over hunger, corporate crime and even the war in Iraq. [

More Lyrics: Do What You Have To Do
by Sarah
What ravages of spirit
conjured this temptuous rage
created you a monster
broken by the rules of love
and fate has lead you through it
you do what you have to do
and fate has led you through it
you do what you have to do ...
and I have the sense to recognize that
I don't know how to let you go
every moment marked
with apparitions of your soul
I'm ever swiftly moving
trying to escape this desire
the yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
the yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
but I have the sense to recognize
that I don't know how
to let you go
I don't know how
to let you go
a glowing ember
burning hot
burning slow
deep within I'm shaken by the violence
of existing for only you
I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do
I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do
and I have sense to recognize but
I don't know how to let you go
I don't know how to let you go
I don't know how to let you go

Lyrics Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
By Sarah McLachlan
All the fear has left me now
I'm not frightened anymore.
It's my heart that pounds beneath my flesh.
it's my mouth that pushes out this breath
and if I shed a tear I won't cage it.
I won't fear love
and if I feel a rage I won't deny it.
I won't fear love.
Companion to our demons
they will dance and we will play.
With chairs candles and clothes
making darkness in the day.
It will be easy to look in or out
upstream or down
without a thought
and if I shed a tear I won't cage it.
I won't fear love
and if I feel a rage I won't deny it.
I won't fear love.
Peace in the struggle to find peace.
Comfort on the way to comfort
and if I shed a tear I won't cage it.
I won't fear love
and if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love.
I won't fear love.
I won't fear love...

"He's under contract with Nip/Tuck, so, from what I understand, it would have to be filmed during his hiatus," the site reported. "And that should be fairly easy, because Nip/Tuck does only a dozen or so episodes, not the usual 22."

FREDDY VS. JASON VS. ASH = everyone wins
The rumors about FREDDY VS. JASON VS. ASH are true. Today's Hollywood Reporter confirms that New Line Cinema has entered discussions with director Sam Raimi, the fellow who helmed the three EVIL DEAD pictures and who owns the copyright to Ash, the sarcastic hero of the DEAD trilogy. If a deal can be reached, Ash will go up against the two horror slasher icons in the sequel to last summer's FREDDY VS. JASON. In that case, it's expected that Bruce Campbell will strike a deal to play Ash for the fourth time. It's unlikely that Raimi would direct the film; he's got plans to helm SPIDER-MAN 3 (set for release in May 2007), but Raimi would likely take a producing credit on the VERSUS film. [

WHISTLING IN THE DARK
TMBG
A woman came up to me and said
I’d like to poison your mind
With wrong ideas that appeal to you
Though I am not unkind
She looked at me, I looked at something
Written across her scalp
And these are the words that it faintly said
As I tried to call for help:
There’s only one thing that I know how to do well
And I’ve often been told that you only can do
What you know how to do well
And that’s be you,
Be what you’re like,
Be like yourself,
And so I’m having a wonderful time
But I’d rather be whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
There’s only one thing that I like
And that is whistling in the dark
A man came up to me and said
I’d like to change your mind
By hitting it with a rock, he said,
Though I am not unkind.
We laughed at his little joke
And then I happily walked away
And hit my head on the wall of the jail
Where the two of us live today.
There’s only one thing that I know how to do well
And I’ve often been told that you only can do
What you know how to do well
And that’s be you,
Be what you’re like,
Be like yourself,
And so I’m having a wonderful time
But I’d rather be whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark

Inmate Loses Court Bid to Grow Hair
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Californian prison officials can cut the hair of an inmate despite his objection that to do so would violate his Native American religious beliefs, a U.S. appeals court ruled on Thursday.
Philip Henderson had maintained that cutting his hair, except under extraordinary circumstances, would defile the creator.
But the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals backed a lower court ruling that said the California Department of Corrections' reasons for requiring short hair -- such as making inmates easier to detect if they try to escape -- were justified.
"We therefore affirm the district court's judgment and its conclusion that the CDC's hair length regulation is reasonably related to legitimate penological interests," the three-judge panel ruled.

The Federal Communications Commission rejected an indecency complaint lodged against UPN's Buffy the Vampire Slayer by a conservative watchdog group, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The complaint filed by the Parent Television Council against an episode of Buffy was dismissed in a 5-0 vote because the commission found the show didn't violate its indecency regulations, the trade paper reported.
The PTC, run by L. Brent Bozell, complained to the commission about the April 22, 2003, episode of Buffy, in which the characters Spike and Buffy fight before having sex, according to the order. "The commission noted that there was no nudity and there was no evidence that the activity depicted was dwelled upon or was used to pander, titillate or shock the audience," the commission said in a release.

The HIV virus has jumped from primates to people on at least seven separate occasions in recent history, not twice as is commonly thought.
And people in Cameroon are showing up with symptoms of HIV, but are testing negative for both the virus and its primate equivalent SIV, the virus from which HIV is thought to have evolved. That suggests that new strains of an HIV-like virus are circulating in wild animals and infecting people who eat them, sparking fears that such strains could fuel an already disastrous global HIV pandemic. "Kong Jing-wen has paid 5,700 to have both of her legs broken and stretched on a rack. The pretty college graduate is now lying in bed, clearly still in considerable pain three days after a doctor sawed through the flesh and bone below her knee to insert what looks an awful lot like knitting needles through the length of her tibiae. Patriot Act Suppresses News Of Challenge to Patriot Act
"'It is remarkable that a gag provision in the Patriot Act kept the public in the dark about the mere fact that a constitutional challenge had been filed in court," Ann Beeson, the ACLU's associate legal director, said in a statement. "President Bush can talk about extending the life of the Patriot Act, but the ACLU is still gagged from discussing details of our challenge to it.'

England Gets First National Jester for 350 Years
STONELEIGH, England (Reuters) - Nigel Roder beat six rivals by public acclaim on Saturday to become England's first official jester for more than 350 years, succeeding Muckle John who lost his job when King Charles 1 was beheaded in 1649.
"This is a real job. He will have to amuse and provoke -- although failure to do so will no longer risk beheading," Tracy Borman, events director of English Heritage, told Reuters. [

The unidentified man severed his organ on Monday in the southern town of Ait Ourir and was taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Marrakesh for treatment.
"He didn't bring his penis with him. He has left the hospital well, but without his penis," a doctor from the Ibn Toufail hospital told Reuters.

Calif. Issues Final Greenhouse Gas Plan for Cars
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California released its final plan on Friday to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks by about 30 percent by requiring hundreds of dollars in technology to control air pollution in new cars.
The plan is the first of its kind among U.S. states. It has been closely tracked by car makers as California accounts for nearly 13 percent of the U.S. auto market and because other states may adopt similar rules.
Auto makers have said they may sue to block the plan.
The California Air Resources Board said that in the initial phase from 2009 through 2012, the plan calls for regulation requiring technology to reduce emissions by about 25 percent for cars and light trucks, and by about 18 percent for larger trucks and sport-utility vehicles. [

Weekend of Nothing
This weekend I did absolutely nothing. Well... Nothing for me. I cleaned the house, got a new garbage disposal installed, went for a walk at Crystal Springs, had an arrival adventure with Paduan, and just finished cleaning all the carpets in the living room.
I started Deep Space 9, and also figured out how to easily knit one of those shawl things that everyone is wearing.
Side story: I was thinking about making one of those for a while because they look pretty cool and I thought it would be pretty simple, and then I went shopping in San Fran with Satan and Co. and learned that everyone and their mother, literally, are wearing those things.
Part of me was like "cool, I am fashionable for once." and the other part was immediately repulsed by the concept of wearing one. However, I did establish that people will pay oodles of money for these things, which makes me wish I had a venue to sell some... Maybe eBay, we'll see.
anyway, off to take a shower, then to the store to get foodstuff for lunches this week. MMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmm Picata!
No game night this week as people seem to have had busy weekends already.

My life is sad
So I have been tediously cleaning up the website, which at final count is actually more like 800 pages, which I can't believe. I have finished round 1 today and am going through for round 2 starting Monday. What's really sad is that after all that, I am doing some metrics reporting (detailed statistical reporting for people who don't know) today and I am kind of like "Wow. This is pretty relaxing..."
That's just sad. Metrics suck to deal with.
Sigh.

Ireland Is Lost Island of Atlantis, Says Scientist
DUBLIN (Reuters) - Atlantis, the legendary island nation over whose existence controversy has raged for thousands of years, was actually Ireland, according to a new theory by a Swedish scientist.
Atlantis, the Greek philosopher Plato wrote in 360 BC, was an island in the Atlantic Ocean where an advanced civilization developed some 11,500 years ago until it was hit by a cataclysmic natural disaster and sank beneath the waves.
Geographer Ulf Erlingsson, whose book explaining his theory will be published next month, says the measurements, geography, and landscape of Atlantis as described by Plato match Ireland almost exactly. [

iRobot
A few of us went to see iRobot last night. Surprisingly, it was one of the better movies that I have seen in quite a while. The CG was incredible - possibly the best I have ever seen, the plot was not lacking much, Will Smith was not too over the top, but still silly, and there was enough to keep you going through the whole movie.
Given, I have not read the book that it is based on, but all in all, I would recommend it, and I would say, go see it while it's in the theaters so you can truly appreciate the graphics...

Gas Mileage vs. Speed Chart
Carl's Top 10 Ways to Save Gasoline
- Drive the Speed limit. I've seen 20%-30% improvement in gas mileage by driving 65 rather than 80. The EPA only tests up to 60 mph (48 mph average speed) to determine the mpg rating for highway driving on cars. Therefore the car manufacturers try to optimize gas mileage at that speed to get a better rating. The optimum speed is probably 55 mph.
- Accelerate slowly. Your gas mileage is directly related to how far you push down with your right foot.
- Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Low tire pressure hurts gas mileage. Most tires should be around 30-35 psi. It will say somewhere on the outside of the tire what it should be inflated to or at least the maximum recommended pressure. Also on the inside end of the driver's side door should have a sticker that shows the recommended tire pressure from the factory.
- Avoid using the air conditioning. Your air conditioning system runs off a pump driven off the engine. It takes energy to pump the Freon through the system. Unless it's hot out just use 'Vent'.
- Give your car regular tune ups. New spark plugs, spark plug wires, air filter, etc can all improve gas mileage.
- Remove excess weight from your car. The more your car weighs the more energy it takes to get it moving.
- Use cruise control on long trips. Using the cruise control keeps your car at a constant speed which improves gas mileage.
- Use the lowest octane gas that is recommended for your car. Higher octane gas does not contain more energy (in fact it probably contains less). Higher octane gas is only needed in cars that are designed for it, such as high compression engines usually only found in sports cars. If your car needs high octane gas it will say "Premium Fuel Required" below the gas gauge and next to the gas cap. [If your car doesn't require premium fuel but detonates when using regular gas (makes a slight popping or pinging noise when accelerating), there's something wrong with your engine. Have it checked out.]
- Gasoline that contains ethanol. This is a catch 22. Gas with ethanol (E10) has less energy content and therefore yields slightly less miles per gallon than gas that uses non-alcohol based additives. But since it is essentially 90% gasoline 10% ethanol, less gasoline and therefore oil is used to create it. Ethanol is created from fermentation of grain. (Valero does not use ethanol, 76 and Chevron use ethanol)
- Try fuel injector cleaner. If you have a high mileage car your fuel injectors could be slightly plugged which affects fuel atomization and therefore gas mileage. A symptom of this is a rough idle. If you have a new car or your injectors aren't plugged, injector cleaner won't do anything.

Re: They messed up my toy
I would have thought that, too, except there's a story behind it. If my understanding is correct, this is the prequel to the batman series. The batmobile actually starts out as a military machine that Bruce Wayne's company is mass-producing. Bruce takes one, maybe modifies it slightly, and uses it for his own purposes. I think, with that background, it's kinda neat.
