Hi from Home!
Hey peeps. I'm chilling at home today (actually, I was out until like 2:30 so most of my day is gone), but it's nice to not have to be at work. YAY 3 day work week this week! I am super tired though from staying up all night with my new computer which is now networked in with my old one. Now I have a game machine and a burning/music/data machine. Nice.

Installing NWN on the other machine now and hope to have a nanosecond to play sometime soon.

Anyway, I hope that you are all having good Mondays!

Screw you, Dennis Miller.

My apologies to any right wingers reading this - no, forget that. Dennis Miller has moved from f'ing up football to f'ing up elections Dude, quoting Descarte doesn't make you intelligent, and neither does backing an a-hole like Bush.

My fav. quote from the article: Miller... adds a celebrity touch to Bush's re-election campaign, much like actor Bruce Willis did in 1992 when Bush's father ran for re-election.

Hmm, and everyone knows how well his father did. . . hmm, maybe there's hope!

Pirates Invades Disneyland
From Sci-Fi Wire: (emphasis mine)

The Disneyland Resort hosted its first movie premiere since opening in 1955 when 1,500 guests stormed the Magic Kingdom on June 29 for the new Disney film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Attendees included the film's stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, who arrived on a 900-foot-long red carpet that ran down Disneyland's Main Street. The park closed to the public early for the first time in its history to accommodate the gala. [more]

Off Monday
Yo, I'm not at work on Monday (personal brain day), but I'll be checking in and blogging and such. Call or e-mail freely and if you want to do anything because you are off too for some reason, let me know!

Today's word a day word: bumf

bumf (bumf) noun

1. Toilet paper.

2. Printed matter of little importance: documents such as corporate memos, governmental forms, junk mail, promotional pamphlets, etc.

[Short for bum fodder.]

That'll have to get worked into my vocab.... especially when talking to G.

re: Supreme Court
I know! No worries, I am happy with everything so far and I would rather enjoy my life than work for something so hard and give up everything on a slim chance that I will get it - it's nearly impossible and highly unlikley anyway given my political views and big mouth....

Thanks though!

FLAT STAR
Stars and planets often swell slightly at the waist because they spin. Earth, for example, is 0.3 percent wider at the Equator than between the poles. Incredibly, one star called Achernar has a girth 50 percent greater than its height, making it the flattest known star. Plotted here with data from the European Southern Observatory in Chile, the star bulges much more than predicted, an anomaly which astronomers are hard pressed to explain.

re: Supreme Court

Your'e not a looser.

re: Supreme Court
If the justices who are not Bush supporters are as intelligent as we give them credit for, then they will understand that one more year in thier position may make all the difference. What I would like to see is the stats on the Bush supporting, but left voting justices taht may retire. If no one is going to retire who votes left, and Bush is only replacing one righ winger for another, it doesn't really matter. It only makes a difference if it will tip the scales. Has anyone threatened to retire?

On a side note, when I was in high school, being on the Supreme Court was one of my career dreams. That's why I was a politics major. That was to be a stepping stone to being oon the ICJ (International Court Justice) for the UN. I kinda feel like a big looser for being a web designer. Oh well, this lets me have way more fun!

The Worst Bush Nominee Yet

Here's more from an email from the DNC on the two Supreme Court cases and yet another fascist Bush nominee.

In two historic decisions this week, the Supreme Court upheld fundamental American values.

On Monday, the Court -- by the slimmest possible margin -- ruled that racial diversity on our nation's college campuses is a vital national interest and that affirmative action is an appropriate Constitutional tool for achieving that goal.

And just today, the Supreme Court handed down a ruling that struck down a Texas law making private, consensual acts between gays and lesbians in their own homes illegal.

Would these decisions have come down from a Bush-packed Supreme Court? President Bush has described current justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas as his models for high court nominees -- and in these two cases, both Scalia and Thomas voted against American values and for small-minded, right-wing extremism.

Alabama Attorney General William Pryor, Bush's nominee for a lifetime seat on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, is the perfect example of the dangers Bush judges represent to our values.

Pryor is an anti-choice extremist who called Roe v. Wade "the worst abomination of constitutional law in our history." He has a long record of opposing civil rights amd supporting environmental destruction. And today's gay rights case? Pryor had taken the same stand as Scalia and Thomas.

Click here to read our DNC Research Special Report on Bill Pryor and learn what kind of extremists President Bush nominates to the federal courts.

Today marks the end of the current Supreme Court term. If one or more justices retire, that news will come soon. Thank you for continuing to stand with us in this fight to protect American values.

Move-On Vote
So the results are in:

BRAUN - 2.21%
DEAN - 43.87%
EDWARDS - 3.19%
GRAHAM - 2.24%
KERRY - 15.73%
KUCINICH - 23.93%
GEPHARDT - 2.44%
LIEBERMAN - 1.92%
SHARPTON - 0.53%
OTHER - 1.93%
UNDECIDED - 2.01%

So, that's good that the guys that we voted for were in the lead. I hope that they run together. That would be a god team.

However, Move-on isn't going to endorse anyone - although I think that they should endorse Dean, given how far in the lead he was and how close to 50% he was in a 9-way race. I didn't even vote for him and I think that's fair.

Anyway, if you want the full report, it's here.

re: Got Milk

Mustache = WTF? That looks so fake!

Review: Wicked
So I saw Wicked last night with Steph, Nancy and Wendy. It rocked! The music was fantastic, the sets were very cool (me and Wendy liked that HUGE dragon that was over the stage the whole time), the costuming was amazing, and the actors were great. Notably the main two witches had AMAZING, gives you chills, voices. The story was also really good - it was really interesting to see an adaptation from the other side. The guy who wrote the book (which has mixed reviews, but I was told last night is nothing like the musical, but worth a read anyway) also wrote Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister (the story of Cinderella through the eyes of the stepsisters), which a bunch of people now have told me to read.

Anyway, the musical is almost done here (ends in like 2 more days) but is on it's way to Broadway so I suppose that it will be back here in a few years. If you guys get the change at that point, go see it.

Got Milk?
Comics Continuum reports that Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft is the latest movie character to be featured in the "Got Milk?" ads. They've even got the picture for you to drool over.

Rowling Teases Potter Fans

In a rare public appearance to answer fan questions, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling teased her fans by throwing doubt on whether her boy-wizard hero would make it all the way to adulthood, the Reuters news service reported. Appearing live at London's Royal Albert Hall in a Webcast June 26 beamed to millions of fans, Rowling answered one boy in Sydney, who asked if she would write any stories about Harry as an adult: "You have to wait and see if he survives to be a grownup. I don't want to give anything away at the moment."

Rowling's response provoked a gasp of astonishment from the 4,000 children in the Albert Hall audience, the news service reported.

Rowling also confessed, "I don't believe in magic in the way that it appears in the books. I would want to believe in it, but I cannot." Rowling's latest book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, came out June 21.

Going to see Wicked tonight
Here's info.

I will let you know how it was tomorrow!

K's away message
So Kyle's away message today was "HOORAY! gay sex for everyone!", which I didn' think was abnormal, cuz, well, it's Kyle. However, I noticed the link and clicked it....

HOORAY! gay sex for everyone!

I think that's F&^%ed up that it even went to court. Anyone who wants to have sex should be able to (as long as all parties are ok with it all).

Well, go supreme court (and yet ANOTHER reason we need to get someone else into the White House so Bush can't f*&k with the court's balance)!

That's my HTML bitch though, none of you probably notice... sorry, professionally nerding out here.

TRON reboots as a comic book
Studio will publish a four-issue series later this year

Comic book company 88 MPH Studios has teamed with Disney Publishing Worldwide to develop and release a comic book series based on the universe of TRON.

Two four issue mini-series are being planned by 88 MPH. The first will serve as a sequel to Disney's TRON 2.0 PC video game, -scheduled for release next month. TRON 2.0 follows the adventures of 20-year-old Jet Bradley, son of Alan Bradley (played by Bruce Boxleitner in the 1982 movie) as he explores the digital world. The first issue of the full-color series will be out sometime this winter.

The second TRON mini-series will launch in spring 2004 and be set 20 years in the past. It will revisit the characters from the Disney movie.

Why are Cesium atomic clocks used?

Since 1967, the International System of Units (SI) has defined the second as the period equal to 9,192,631,770 cycles of the radiation which corresponds to the transition between two energy levels of the ground state of the Cesium-133 atom. This definition makes the cesium oscillator (sometimes refered to generically as an atomic clock) the primary standard for time and frequency measurements. Other physical quantities, like the volt and meter, also rely on the definition of the second as part of their own definitions.
Atomic clocks are quite complex, but the basic theory is simple. Like all clocks, they are intended to make the same event happen over and over. The repetition of this event produces a frequency, which is intended to be as stable as possible. For example, the pendulum in a grandfather clock swings back and forth at the same rate, over and over. The swings of the pendulum are counted to keep time. In a cesium oscillator, the transitions of the cesium atom as it moves back and forth between two energy levels are counted to keep time. The best cesium oscillators (such as NIST-F1) can produce frequency with an uncertainty of about 1 x 10-15, which translates to a time error of about 0.1 nanoseconds per day.

What is a leap second?

A leap second is a second added to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) to make it agree with astronomical time to within 0.9 second. UTC is an atomic time scale, based on the performance of atomic clocks. Astronomical time is based on the rate of rotation of the earth. Since atomic clocks are more stable than the rate at which the earth rotates, leap seconds are needed to keep the two time scales in agreement.

The first leap second was added on June 30, 1972, and they occur at a rate of slightly less than one per year, on average. Although it is possible to have a negative leap second (a second removed from UTC), so far, all leap seconds have been positive (a second has been added to UTC). Based on what we know about the earth's rotation, it is unlikely that we will ever have a negative leap second

Hehe. That's a great one. I'm glad they cut out all the stuid parts.

Re: Interesting facts

>Peanuts are one of the ingredients of dynamite.
That is kind of stretching it. "An explosive substance consisting of nitroglycerin absorbed by some inert, porous solid, as infusorial earth, sawdust, etc."

This explains a lot about the world.

Move on Vote
So last night I voted for the move on election thing where they are possibly going to back one of the democratic candidates. I just want to say for the record that if that's what we have to work with, we're in a whole lotta deep s&%t. That was the most pathetic bunch of candidates I have ever seen. I spent like an hour and a half and went to all of their websites. It made me sad.

Eventually, I voted for Kucinich, and only then because he was the only one who didn't JUST slander Bush, but actually said what he thought was a better idea. His website was interesting and he has a sensible stance on drug issues. Also, I agreed with the majority of his platform whereas the rest always had some major foreign poicy glitch. What's up with these guys? They seem more republican than democrat and their records are not all that impressive.

Anyway, I think we are in a sad state indeed. I may actually switch to repulican so I can sabbotage thier vote a bit instead of having to settle for this crap. In the main election though, I may actually consider Nader - since he always runs - as lame as he is, at least he's consistant. However, I'm not wholy sure I want to live here if any of these guys are running the show.

Anyway, there's my Thursday rant....

Redneck Logic
Well, it seems these two rednecks, Bubba and Cooter, decided they should go to college so they could get ahead.

Bubba went in first, and the professor advises him to take Math, History, and Logic.

"What's Logic?" Bubba asked.

"Well, let me give you an example," said the professor. "Do you own a weed-eater?"

"Sure do," the redneck responded.

"Okay. Then I assume, using logic, that you have a yard," the professor went on.

"That's real good," said the redneck, in awe.

"Logic also tells me that since you have a yard, you also have a house. Is that right?"

"GAWL-LEE!" the redneck shouted.

"And since you own a house and a house is tough to take care of by yourself, logic dictates that you have a wife. Right?"

"Betty Mae! This is incredible!" Bubba is catching on now.

"Finally, since you have a wife, logically I can assume you are heterosexual rather than homosexual. Is that right?"

"You are absolutely right! Why that's the most fascinating thang I ever heerd of. I can't wait to take this here logic class!"

Bubba, proud of the new world opening up to him, walks back into the hallway where Cooter is still waiting. "So what classes are ya takin"? Cooter asks.

"Math, History, and Logic," replied Bubba.

"What in tarnation is logic?" asks Cooter.

"Let me give you an example," Bubba says. "Do you own a weed-eater?"

"No." says Cooter.

"You're Queer, aintcha?"

Status Update: Stress level back to normal
So I got the Safe Computing site done and up yesterday, and one of my two huge management projects got it's draft site up and sent to the client as well. Today I have to send deliverables to the last of the projects (they have several stages to the project, this being the first set of three deliverables). So anyway, I am decompressing, which is nice. AND, to top that off, I have Monday and Friday off next week and George is out of town Tuesday through Thursday so I get a little vacation from stress! YAY!

Thanks for dealing with me while I had all of that on my mind!

HELLS YEAH!
Hey peeps, I am at home right now getting my shower fixed, but I now have a cable modem in my very own house!!! I should be in to work in a bit.

Yeah, so all of those projects are due today and tomorrow so sorry if I am a bit delinquent in my postings. I will have internet at home tomorrow and will be annoying, I am sure, soon after that with all of my posts.

Esther - I signed up for the ballot - got it - but want to go research these guys before I vote.

People, if you go vote here, they may back one of the candidates, and as you can see from E's other article, it could make a difference so you may want to start now to get dubbaya out of the house. It seems early and useless to do these things, but it can be the make or break. As we have seen, he didn't really even get elected last time, so a slight nudge might be all it takes. If nothing else, do it because you don't want me to be hostile for the next four years or to move out of the country for that time (Mike, I can hear you thinking evil things, stop it).

Also, if you are not registered to vote, please do so here. Personally, I don't care what you register as as long as you vote as an informed citizen. If you register repulican or democrat, you can effect their primaries, and you may want to register opposite of what you really are so that you can sabatoge from within. More importantly than the general large elections, ar ethe state, county, and city elections. California usually speaks as one voice for national issues so there is no worry there, but you also have the power to effect taxes, schools, roads, and policy in your local area, which you do make a difference in. I will answer any questions anyone has about anything or help you find answers if you need it, but it is important to excercise this right.

That's my schpiel as a politcs major and a citizen. Thanks for listening.

Interesting Washington Post Article About MoveOn Primary
The following article talks about the online primary, what it could be worth (up to $30 million in 2 days) to one of the candidates if they take more than 50% of the vote, and a bit of MoveOn history (which was actually founded in Silicon Valley).

Net Worth
Why MoveOn.org's backing could be priceless to a Democratic candidate.

As revolutions go, this one began with remarkably little fanfare.

Last Thursday MoveOn.org sent out an e-mail to its members -- all 1.4 million of them -- asking if they'd like to take part in an online Democratic presidential primary later this month. Candidates would answer questions that MoveOn put to them, and if one of them managed to pull a majority of the members' votes, the organization would endorse him... [more]

Move-On's Presidential Primary Begins Tomorrow (June 24)
I received the following email from Move-On. Please, let's do everything we can to replace the imposter with someone who has at least half a brain and a smidgen of humanity:

Last week we asked if we should consider early endorsement of a Presidential candidate, and the results were overwhelming. 96.3% out of 186,000 who responded said YES to an early "MoveOn Primary."

So we are moving forward. If one of the nine candidates receives more than 50% of the vote next Tuesday and Wednesday, we will officially endorse that candidate. To make sure you have the information you need, letters to the MoveOn membership and responses to the MoveOn interview questions from all the Presidential candidates are online now at http://www.moveon.org/pac/cands/.

Invite your friends to register to vote in the MoveOn primary by going to http://www.moveon.org/pac/reg/. The more of us that join in this process, the better the chances that ordinary voters, not pundits or big donors, will determine the Democratic nominee.

I will be so happy when I get my cable modem!

Anyway, if you are interested, we'll leave this area around 11 tomorrow (going to the yarn store first if you wanna do that too). Give me a call and we'll arrange something if you would like to come. It should, at the very least, be good company, nice and relaxing, and probably tasty too!

TGIF!
Holy crap this week was odd. I am SO glad that it is almost over.

K, so for those of you who don't know, I am project managing these two insane projects that are a nightmare and involve coordination with India. They also involve coordination with customers who not only have normal jobs, but generally lag and do not understand technical questions at all, but seem to find the time, and need, to call me at 9:30 evey morning for a half hour and talk to me about images, and why they aren't on the technical testing server. EVERY day. SAME questions. (sigh) This all comes to a head this week when Phase one of the biggest of all jobs is due and the whole site for the other mess is due.

Anyway, there's a light at the end of the tunnel...

Soon, hopefully next week, both of my HUGE ass projects will be done and gone for a while (until the customers come back from testing) and G will be out of town July 1-5. This will all be kicked off with a weekend in the woods with some cool people (you know who you are), which should be the start of my summer of relaxation.

Oh, and Comic con is REALLY soon. That makes me happy.

There's your status update. Thanks for being supportive as always, you guys rock!

Oaks Theater slated for closure, demolition

Planners OK Andronico's despite residents concerns

Cupertino--Residents continued to voice their support to keep The Oaks movie theater intact at The Oaks Shopping Center at a June 12 hearing, but officials told them that they were barking up the wrong tree.

Despite neighbors' concerns and opposition, the Cupertino Planning Commission approved a use permit for Andronico's grocery to build a 32,000-square-foot store at the center.

Developers plan to demolish the theater and build the upscale grocery store with 496 parking spaces in its place. They also propose housing a cooking school in the store.

Residents presented commissioners with a petition of more than 1,000 names of theater patrons who do not want to see their movie house demolished for the grocery store. The theater faithful say they see the Oaks theater as a last venue for inexpensive cinematic entertainment and a community focal point. "Without it, we'd lose something we don't have anywhere else," said Cupertinian Karen Jacobson.

Though commissioners were sympathetic to the neighbors' concerns, they said selecting which businesses can move to The Oaks does not fall in their jurisdiction. "This is not our job as the Planning Commission to make the determination if we want a theater or not. This is a philosophical issue and you need to go to the City Council," said commission chairwoman Andrea Harris.

Commissioners in earlier hearings said they'd like to see a compromise in which both the theater and the grocery could exist side by side. However, Chris Hittig, the attorney for Chicago-based Urban Retail Property, the owner of the center, said accommodating both businesses at The Oaks would not be feasible.

"The theater has been notified that the owner was going to terminate the lease. The decision has been weighed by the owner to put in a grocery store at the site," he said.

Officials have agreed to talk to the De Anza College Flint Center about the possibility of incorporating inexpensive movies into the Flint Center, or other De Anza College, entertainment programs.

In addition to objecting to the loss of the movie theater, some residents also said they fear their neighborhoods will be impacted by additional traffic. City traffic engineers met with residents at a neighborhood forum two weeks ago to discuss those worries.

Andronico's latest proposal debuted at last week's meeting. At that time the developers agreed to lengthen the throat of the westerly driveway entrance on Stevens Creek Boulevard, in order to mitigate potential backups on the street. However, residents still contend that a backup is inevitable because drivers entering the shopping center must vie for the same lane as those getting onto Highway 85.

Ray Chong, the city's traffic engineer, said that the neighbors have a valid point. The city's staff will look into posting new traffic signs along the boulevard beginning at Stelling Road to make directions more clear to drivers, he said.

Chong also said Andronico's would create a minimal impact on the surrounding neighborhoods. He estimated that the store will generate 77 trips during a weekday evening peak hour and a 5 percent increase in neighborhood traffic. Some residents seemed skeptical of those figures, but Chong said the numbers were estimates derived from national statistical data.

Not everyone was convinced. "Those numbers were pretty flaky," said city resident Tony Vandersteen. He plans to talk with the council and the shopping center's owner about the demolition of the theater. But he admits that he hasn't progressed very far.

"It's like we're talking to a brick wall, and it's going nowhere," he said. "And we've gotten no interest from the city."

The Andronico's proposal is slated for the council agenda on June 19.

Boy Breeds Eggs in His Body, Produces Beetles?

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - A 13-year-old Indian boy has begun producing winged beetles in his urine after hatching the eggs in his body, a senior medical official said Monday.

Doctor Chittaranjan Maity, Medical Education Director of West Bengal state where the boy is from, said doctors found the beetles while examining him for pain in the groin area.

"Doctors were really surprised to see the beetles," he told Reuters. "There are eggs of the beetle in a fistula in his body and he is getting medical treatment to try to kill the eggs," Maity said.

The boy had been taken to hospital Sunday after complaining of pain while urinating.

The beetles -- more than half a centimeter in length -- belong to the Staphylinidae rove beetle family of insects. Most types are predators but some feed on fungi, algae and decaying plant matter.

An expert in urology, Doctor N. Subramanian, said that in theory it was possible for insects to hatch in the body and come out in urine but said he had not heard of such a case.

Brothel Offers Discount for Retirees

CANBERRA (Reuters) - An Australian brothel is offering retirees a five percent discount in what it boasts is a world first.

Neil Campbell, owner of the Viper Room in the east coast city of Brisbane, said men in their 60s, 70s, and 80s were among regular visitors to the brothel, but many complained it was a drain on their pensions.

"All other businesses offer pensioners a discount, so we thought if we also offered pensioners a discount they might come more often," Campbell told Reuters Monday.

He said the offer of a five percent discount on the usual hourly fee of A$210 ($140) would initially apply only on Sundays, but the offer would be extended if it proved successful.

Prostitution is legal in some parts of Australia but brothels need to meet certain standards to earn a license. An Australia bordello, the Daily Planet, became the world's first publicly owned brothel recently when it listed on the Australian stock exchange.

I'm tellin ya, Australia gets better and better every day....

More Wisdom

"I yam what I yam."
    -Popeye

Some Wisdom
I got an e-mail from my friend James that says:

When someone is seeking, it happens quite easily that he only sees the thing that he is seeking; that he is unable to find anything, unable to absorb anything, because he is only thinking of the thing he is seeking, because he has a goal, because he is obsessed with his goal. Seeking means: to have a goal; but finding means: to be free, to be receptive, to have no goal. You are perhaps indeed a seeker, for in striving towards your goal, you do not see many things that are under your nose.

-Siddhartha

I am suddenly flashed back to having to read Siddhartha.

The problem is that I can't figure out if I want to go into the woods and contemplate the philosophy of life, or if I want to smack James for sending me an e-mail with a Siddhartha quote in it.

Maybe I'll go into the woods and contemplate smacking James.

Re: Noelle's day

My day.

So, I need a hug.

While I am very happy that I will get to see the Crystal Method and get to hang with friends in a matter of hours, no one here wants to make me happy today.

I have had to fight for everything.

The most notable incident happened moments ago. A client called and was enraged that his CD (music CD, which I have NOTHING to do with) wasn't working.
He yelled and screamed about it and then asked me if there was anything that I could think of that could be wrong with it.

I went through my normal list of "scratches, bad burn, shitty player on your PC" blah blah blah and then he stops, goes silent for a minute, and then assures me that he knows what the problem is.

He left a magnet on the CD, so it MUST be *demagnitized*.

I was like "ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm no, actually, magnets have nothing to do with CD's."

He wouldn't take no for an answer, so after a 10 minute conversation about lasers and how they work, I decided to just agree with him.

That MUST be the problem then.

Can someone please come here and give me a hug?

Here's a pretty picture

Naked Man Scares Shark to Death?

LONDON (Reuters) - A British comedian could face criminal charges over the death of a "sensitive" shark after he jumped into a tank at an aquarium in the nude, the Daily Telegraph newspaper reported Friday.

The 12-year old smooth hound shark, which measured three feet, died suddenly two days after Guy Venables jumped into its tank as a publicity stunt at the Brighton Sea Life Center, southern England.

"This variety of shark is susceptible to stress. We are very concerned he died as a result of seeing Mr Venables jumping into the tank," Sea Life Center's Lisa Handscomb told the newspaper.

"The shark is being examined by our biological services team and if it is found that he died from stress, we will prosecute Mr Venables for criminal damage."

Dude! Look What I Caught in My, Uh, Uh, Net...

PARIS (Reuters) - A French fisherman netted a surprise catch this week -- 66 pounds of cannabis.

The man was fishing on the river Yvette, on the southern edge of Paris, when he spotted something strange in the water, French media reported Friday.

Taking a closer look, he discovered 28 bags, each containing a little over a kilogram of cannabis resin and immediately alerted the police.

"Perhaps it was the usual hiding place for a drug trafficker," a local policeman was quoted as saying in the Liberation daily.

"With the heat, the (water) level had fallen. There was only about 50 cm of water," he said. "It's very rare that people bring in this sort of commodity in such quantities."

So, who's up for fishing???

Saturday...Opera Rave....

Not sure if I can go, but in case you guys are interested, this looks really cool:

Think Pacific Heights meet Burning Man meets the Castro

Imagine dancing in a massive warehouse space surrounded by opera sets and seeing a professional opera diva appear in the distance to belt out house remixed aria by Gavin Hardkiss followed by the operetta from The Fifth Element. Now come see it. San Francisco Opera is sponsoring this one-time-only party, allowing Ggreg Taylor (aka Nambla the Clown) to utilize their huge elaborate sets for his massive SOMA warehouse dance party to promote opera. Opera is powerful spectacle and art on its own; combined with a wild warehouse party, this event will be outrageous. And you'll only able to see it once. Ever. Saturday, June 14th.

DJ's include Lewis from Sugar opening for Jenv from Wicked's four hour set on the main dance floor. Ouchy the Clown and PinkyRing spin on the indie floor. It's a masked costume ball with opera ticket prizes given out for best costumes in four categories.

Advance tickets are available at Cafi Flore (Market@ Noe, SF) and Body Body Wear, 535 Castro. Advance tickets are $20 forcostumed, $25 non-costumed, and $30 at the door. (21+ with ID, please)

German found living with dead housemate

BERLIN (Reuters) - German authorities have put a 43-year-old man into psychiatric care after he was found living with his housemate who had been dead a month, police say.

Police discovered the rotting body of the 58-year-old man on his living room couch, following a tip-off from a hired gardener who grew suspicious after being repeatedly sent away. An autopsy on the body gave no hint of foul play, police said.

"The man told us he had just stopped eating," said Hans Roeck, a police spokesman in the southern town of Aalen.

We can only hope that you will continue in your efforts to be destructive and cruel in the future. While you are certainly considered an asset to us, you will find that there is still room for improvement. If you can refrain from killing them, some of the other evil people around you may give you some inspiration or ideas on how you can continue to grow in your state of being evil. At this stage you are certainly prospering sufficiently to be one of our honored friends. Come to the dark side, you know you want to!

U.K. Scientist May Have Found Nefertiti Mummy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A British Egyptologist announced on Monday her team may have identified the mummy of Egyptian Queen Nefertiti, the wife and co-ruler with pharaoh Akhenaten and stepmother to legendary boy King Tutankhamun. [more]

Wow, they have been looking for her for a long time...

SWEET!: The return of MR. PEABODY and SHERMAN
Set the wayback machine!

The director of STUART LITTLE and THE HAUNTED MANSION is lining up a new project for his production company to develop, and it's based on a classic cartoon series. MR. PEABODY & SHERMAN got its start on THE ADVENTURES OF ROCKY & BULLWINKLE show and now it might get turned into a combination CGI/live-action feature film.

The proposed movie is set up at Sony Pictures and has the involvement of Tiffany Ward, the daughter of the cartoon characters creator, Jay Ward. Minkoff will serve as a producer on the proposed film, with the door open for him to direct if he wants it. A screenwriter is being sought for the project. There's also the chance that a new TV series could come about from the developers.

MR. PEABODY (the dog) & SHERMAN (the boy) stories were pretty much the same in each four-and-a-half minute episode. Using their time-travelling "wayback" machine, the duo would travel back to the past and witness key moments from history. They also usually had a hand in making sure things went according to what was in the history books.

I like this song.
It makes me happy.
Here's the lyrics.

Phish
Bouncin' Around the Room

the woman was a dream I had
though rather hard to keep
for when my eyes were watching hers, they closed, and I was still asleep

for when my hand was holding hers
she wispered words and I awoke

and faintly bouncing round the room
the echo of whomever spoke
and I awoke, and faintly bouncing round the room
the echo of whomever spoke

the place I sought was far beneath, the surface of the sea
my sight was poor, but I was sure
the sirens sang their song for me

they dance above me as I sink
I see them through a crystal haze
and hear the sweet sound bouncing round
the neverending coral maze,
the crystal haze,
and hear the bouncing round the room
the neverending coral maze

then before and now once more, I'm bouncing round the room
that time and once again, I'm bouncing round the room
that time and once again, I'm bouncing round the room
that time and once again, I'm bouncing round the room
that time and once again, I'm bouncing round the room, (cont)

and I awoke, faintly bouncing round the room
the echo of whomever spoke
and I awoke, faintly bouncing round the room
the echo of whomever spoke
and I awoke, faintly bouncing round the room
the echo of whomever spoke (cont)

BIG SUNSPOT:
Sunspot 375 has grown impressively during the past 24 hours. It now stretches nearly 10 Earth-diameters from side to side and has developed a twisted "beta-gamma-delta" magnetic field, which poses a threat for X-class solar flares. Any explosions from its vicinity during the next few days would likely be Earth-directed. This large spot is easy to see, but never stare at the sun! Use safe solar projection techniques described at spaceweather.com.

The Strange Physics of Foam
What's made mostly of gas, a dash of liquid, and acts like a springy solid? Foams. Foams are so common we seldom appreciate how strange they are. Scientists are designing an experiment for the International Space Station to investigate the puzzling physics of these everyday substances. Re: Reloaded
OMG that's funny!

Hmmm...

WTF?

LOL Looking further down the thread (This was posted in a Doom III forum, can you tell the game's taking too long to get finished?) someone posted a description of the show this is from...

"Yeh ive seen the propgram on tv. So far i know it is only on in the UK. Trust me it is feking weird. Heres how to image what it is like:
magine some aliens kidnapped a Teletubby, pumped it full of ecstasy, acid and marijuana, forced it to play Rez for eight hours straight and then sent it to bed and somehow watched its dreams. I can personally assure you the result would be absolutely nowhere near as demented as Boohbah."

Sewage leak plagues Sweden's "Panties"

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Hundreds of tonnes of human waste have leaked from containers at a Swedish fertiliser plant, sparking a health scare in a town called "Panties".

Officials told the Sodermanlands Nyheter newspaper on Friday that hot weather may have made methane gas expand and burst the plastic sewage tanks in Trosa -- whose name, as the paper gleefully pointed out, is what Swedes call women's underpants.

LOL!

What comes after "Happily ever after"? The butt-kicking, of course!

Also from Sci-Fi Wire:

Fairytale In The Works
Producer John Wells has teamed with independent writer-producer Nick Davis and screenwriter J.J. Simone to develop a family action comedy about three grumpy fairytale femmes, Variety reported.

The untitled live-action script will feature Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty transplanted by a fairy godmother from Happily Ever After Land to modern-day New York in order to grow up. While coming to grips with metropolitan life, they unlock their inner action-heroines and set about saving the universe from evil, the trade paper said.

Black Takes On Rad Brad

From Sci-Fi Wire:

Actor Jack Black and screenwriter Philip Stark (Dude, Where's My Car?), have signed a deal with New Line Cinema to develop a feature about the world's greatest video game player, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Black will produce and possibly star in the film, entitled Rad Brad, Modern Warrior. [more]

More Aliens On The Way

The Zap2it Web site reported preliminary details of the fifth and sixth films in the popular Aliens franchise, which will feature Sigourney Weaver's character, Ripley, defending the Earth from colonization by the evil aliens. According to the site, Weaver has said that she would be interested in reprising her role for the sequels.

The site revealed that the fifth film will find the Earth "under attack from alien warrior drop ships," while the sixth will force Ripley to "turn to the dark side in order to save civilization." No directors or cast have been attached to the as-yet-untitled sequels.

More about Plasma
Found this (info toward the bottom after all the links) which is helpful. Noatbly why it is better:

"Fusion reactions result in the production of an extremely hot and electrically conducting plasma that may be manipulated magnetically to produce thrust directly, without the intermediate steps of converting the energy into electricity, which in turn needs to be converted into thrust. This would lead to further increase in the specific power of the plasma rockets as well as specific impulse."

and
"The technical priorities for applying fusion energy for space propulsion are somewhat different, even though the science and engineering underpinning both applications share much overlap and synergism. For space propulsion, a low mass for the propulsion system is the primary requirement. And it's conceivable that cost of energy as high as tens of dollars per kW-hr may be acceptable for space propulsion."

There's your science lesson for the day! :-)

Of Comments and Goofnoodles
This is may sound a little strange coming from a guy who has comments on his own blog, but I'd actually like to see a return to a comments-less Goofnoodle.

I honestly think I prefer the free-wheeling, everybody-posts running narrative to the separated-out comments. I hadn't even thought of that back when Noelle and I had discussed adding a commenting feature, but GN has a neat community feel that isn't the same if the comments (silly, snide, and otherwise) are moved out onto a different page.

That's my $0.02. :-)

Word for the day: Magnetoplasma

Say it in all sorts of ways... It's a neat word. Mag-neeeeeeeeeeeeeet-ooooooooooooooooooooooooplasma (giggle)

Here's another short article about that rocket.
And here's another if you are really into it. (M - if you check the spacecraft propulsion link and check out the comparative numbers, it's incredible)

Review: Finding Nemo
So, I saw Nemo last night.

It was VERY cute, VERY Disney, VERY Pixar. The story line was good, the animation was great, the characters made the movie.

Down Sides: there were no real, overarching bad guys. It was all circumstance.

Anyway, it was good - I'd recommend seeing it. Also, the credits are pretty cute, so if you want to, stay and check them out.

I'm here to help you on your path to inner peace....
I'm passing this along to you as I consider you a valued friend.
This worked for me and I think it may work for you. I have found Inner Peace. Recently I read an article that stated:

The best way to achieve inner peace is to Finish Things You Have Started. So today I finished two cases of Heineken, the last half of a bag of weed, a nearly full bottle of Jose Cuervo, remainder of a Vicadin prescription, and slapped the living shit out of someone I have never liked.

I feel better than I have felt for a long time.

Farmer Parable

An old farmer had owned a large farm for several years. He had a large pond in the back, fixed up nice; picnic tables, horseshoe courts, basketball court, etc. The pond was properly shaped and fixed up for swimming when it was built.

One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over. As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end of the pond.

One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out until you leave!"

The old man replied, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim or make you get out of the pond naked."

"I only came to feed the alligator."

Moral: Old age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill.

Marvin the Martian goes back home
Warner Bros. cartoon characters used for NASA mission

When NASA launches its Mars Exploration Rover Missions this month, the mission patches that the control crew will be wearing on their jaackets and drinking coffee from their mugs will sport two heroes from classical animation.

The Warner Bros. characters Daffy Duck (portraying his cosmic Duck Dodgers character) and Marvin the Martian have been selected by NASA, the United States Air Force, and Boeing as the mission's "planet gladiators", representatives of exploration. With Marvin being used for rover A and Daffy for rover B, the mission logos will be seen on Team Delta crew suits, jackets and mugs and the Air Force 1SLS Delta rocket launch pad.

The Mars Exploration Rover (MER) launches will bring two rovers to the surface of Mars to further explore the red planet's surface. The first rocket is scheduled for lift-off on June 8 while the second is scheduled for June 25.

Bah. What a dumb set of questions.

"Do you smoke?" This is not evil. This is weakness.

"Have you ever killed an animal?" Do insects count?
For these niggling questions, I bet they do.

What about contemplating if you are, in fact, a cannibal ?

What about secret laboratories ?
