SAN FRANCISCO - A long-delayed cell phone from Apple Computer Inc. and Motorola Inc. that can play iTunes music downloads is finally set to debut through Cingular Wireless, a research analyst said.

LONDON, (AFP) - British tourists have left the residents of one charming Austrian village effing and blinding by constantly stealing the signs for their oddly-named village.

While British visitors are finding it hilarious, the residents of F---ing are failing to see the funny side, The Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported.

Only one kind of crimimal ever stalks the sleepy 32-house village near Salzburg on the German border -- cheeky British tourists armed with a sense of humour and a screwdriver.

But the local authorities are hitting back and with the signs now set in concrete, police chief Kommandant Schmidtberger is on the lookout.

"We will not stand for the F---ing signs being removed," the officer told the broadsheet.

"It may be very amusing for you British, but F---ing is simply F---ing to us. What is this big F---ing joke? It is puerile."

Local guide Andreas Behmueller said it was only the British that had a fixation with F---ing.

"The Germans all want to see the Mozart house in Salzburg," he explained.

And today, Neil mentioned Glen Feron's Art of Retouching website. you can click on individual photographs, and mouse on them to see the original photo, mouse off to look at the photoshopped version that appeared in the advert or the magazine, and watch as human beings, with all the saggy bits that human beings have, would reshape or change into vessels of pure desire.

I've been playing the ANANSI BOYS audio done by my friend, comedian and actor (and occasional blogger) Lenny Henry, since it came in, and it has made me happier and happier (except where it makes me go "How did I let a sentence like that get out? And now it is too late to rewrite it. Argh.") And I keep playing it for people who come over to the house, even the ones who don't think they like audio books.

I've wanted to put up something from it on the blog for a while, but we weren't sure if there were any copyright or licensing issues that might make it problematic. My argument was that it was just like putting up the text extract from the first chapter, only you could listen to it.

This morning the nice people at Harper Audio phoned to say that they would allow me to put up the first track of Lenny Henry's performance of ANANSI BOYS here at the blog. Stick it on your mp3 players...

Two short film clips have appeared online that may be the beginning of a viral marketing campaign for the upcoming SF film Serenity, based on the short-lived FOX TV series Firefly. The first film clip, which features a title card reading "R. Tam, Session 416, Second Excerpt" was posted on the iFilm Web site on Aug. 16. It features a man who appears to be choking, followed by a brief appearance by Summer Glau, who plays a character named River Tam in the film.

A second clip, labeled "Session 1 Excerpt," was discovered on Aug. 23 and shows more of Glau being interviewed by a man possibly portrayed by Serenity writer/director Joss Whedon himself, with clear references to characters, situations and places mentioned in Firefly. The existence of the second clip was revealed on various Firefly fan groups and message boards by a poster using the name "John Dowses" which, as noted by several fans, is an anagram for Joss Whedon.

A representative from Universal, the studio releasing the film, told SCI FI Wire that she had no knowledge about the origin of the footage. Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM. Serenity opens Sept. 30. [via]

I have been so swamped at work (was there until 11:30 last night) that I haven't been keeping up very well. I have been stressed and tired and not sleeping still. I really feel like I need my bloggy goodness back in my life. My so-called week of peace turned out to be the opposite, and it's only getting worse. Still, i will have to make time. Blogging seems to center me for some reason. I guess it's the same therapy that you get from talking to your friends, but you get to do a global broadcast instead. I'll work on making time for myself to do that.

Yeah, I'm not one for plugging stores here, but the interface for Boing Boing's new store kicks ass. It's literally build your own [insert promotional item here]. First, you select the style of what you want, then the logo, then you can just scroll your mouse over the color coices and it will show you it exactly how you'll get it. You can even adjust the size of the logo in question as well as it's position on the item. There's a huge variety of stuff and some really cool colors for ink.

It's everything I've always wanted from Cafe Pess, but never have gotten.

Angelina Jolie has been set to star in Beowulf, the animated Robert Zemeckis movie based on the Old English epic poem, and the project is close to securing distribution through Paramount and Warner Brothers, Variety reported.

Jolie will play the queen of darkness, who tempts the Viking hero as he makes his way in the quest to become king. She joins Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, Brendan Gleeson and Robin Wright Penn in the film, which will be made with the same performance-capture technique Zemeckis used in The Polar Express.

Roger Avary and Neil Gaiman wrote the screenplay, with Zemeckis and his ImageMovers partners Steve Starkey and Jack Rapke producing and Martin Shafer and the writers executive-producing.

Well, out Annual Conference starts on Wednesday. This is relevant because pretty much everyone that can possibly give me more work to do is on a 9:30 a.m. flight to Chicago and after that will be dealing with all things Convention. This means several things:
1) I will have some free time in the next few days. I can sit and read the news, blog and generally get my internet life back.
2) No one will be there to panic when something goes wrong. It will happen, the rest of the kids and I will fix it, and everyone will remain calm, if not totally cynical. It will be lovely.
3) Most of the Diributors will also be at this convention so I will not have to answer emails from field support that say things like "Mrs. so-and-so wants to know why you moved the product shot for SKU 87654 over 2 pixels."
4) My already pretty awesome free reign of when I come and go will be extended as my wonderful boss is there and so is Alex, my co-worker extrodiare. I don't have to make meetings and I don't have to worry that something blew up and I had better get there ASAP to make sure everything is under control.

Wonderful. *sigh*

I still have a truly awesome amount of work to do by Friday, when we do the biggest release of the year, but I am happy to report that thanks to me working all day on Saturday, it all looks manageable.

My job is already pretty cool, but this week really kicks ass. The best part is that 1/2 of them are taking next week off to wind down and the other 1/2 will be a daze for the next week, so this wonderful state of complete control may stick around for a while.
