You asked, so I'll answer as best as I can. As long as I knew I couldn't screw things up too badly, I think I'd see the past. The future has the potential to be way too disappointing. If logistics (ie speaking the language, etc) weren't a problem, I'd go to ancient Egypt. Otherwise, maybe I'd check out woodstock or something cool like that. I don't think I'd go if I knew I couldn't get back, though. Too many people here that I love. :) What about everyone else?

Ratner Mulls Dark Materials

Director Brett Ratner told SCI FI Wire he wants to helm the film adaptation of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. Playwright Tom Stoppard is writing the screenplay for New Line Cinema. "There's not even a script, so it's a ways away, but New Line, the studio that I'm in business with, is developing it," Ratner said in an interview. "I'm just hopeful."

The trilogy, which begins with The Golden Compass, centers on an 11-year-old girl who tries to rescue her best friend from kidnappers. Along the way, she encounters witches, talking bears and a truth-telling compass. "It's kind of like Harry Potter [or] Lord of the Rings," Ratner said.

Good Foreign Policy a Casualty of War
Today, It is We Americans Who Live in Infamy

NEW YORK -- We are at war again -- not because of enemy attack, as in World War II, nor because of incremental drift, as in the Vietnam War -- but because of the deliberate and premeditated choice of our own government.

Now that we are embarked on this misadventure, let us hope that our intervention will be swift and decisive, and that victory will come with minimal American, British and civilian Iraqi casualties.

But let us continue to ask why our government chose to impose this war. The choice reflects a fatal turn in U.S. foreign policy, in which the strategic doctrine of containment and deterrence that led us to peaceful victory during the Cold War has been replaced by the Bush Doctrine of preventive war. The president has adopted a policy of "anticipatory self-defense" that is alarmingly similar to the policy that imperial Japan employed at Pearl Harbor on a date which, as an earlier American president said it would, lives in infamy.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was right, but today it is we Americans who live in infamy. The global wave of sympathy that engulfed the United States after 9/11 has given way to a global wave of hatred of American arrogance and militarism. Public opinion polls in friendly countries regard George W. Bush as a greater threat to peace than Saddam Hussein. Demonstrations around the planet, instead of denouncing the vicious rule of the Iraqi president, assail the United States on a daily basis.

The Bush Doctrine converts us into the world's judge, jury and executioner -- a self-appointed status that, however benign our motives, is bound to corrupt our leadership. As John Quincy Adams warned on July 4, 1821, the fundamental maxims of our policy "would insensibly change from liberty to force ... [America] might become the dictatress of the world. She would no longer be the ruler of her own spirit." Already the collateral damage to our civil liberties and constitutional rights, carried out by the religious fanatic who is our attorney general, is considerable -- and more is still to come.

What drove the rush to war? Hussein has a significantly smaller military force than he had in 1990, and he has grown weaker as more weapons have been exposed and destroyed under the United Nations' inspection regime. The cause of our rush to war was so trivial as to seem idiotic. It was the weather. American troops, our masters tell us, will lose their edge in the Persian Gulf's midday sun; so we had to go to war before summer. This is a reason to rush to war? We have, after all, a professional army -- and a professional army ought not to lose its edge so quickly and easily.

There is a base suspicion that we are going to war against Iraq because that is the only war we can win. We can't win the war against Al Qaeda because Al Qaeda strikes from the shadows and disappears into them. We can't win a war against North Korea because it has nuclear weapons. Indeed, the danger from North Korea is far more clear, present and compelling than the danger from Iraq, and our different treatment of the two countries is a potent incentive for other rogue states to develop their own nuclear arsenals.

How have we gotten into this tragic fix without searching debate? No war has been more extensively previewed than this one. Despite pro forma disclaimers, President Bush's determination to go to war has been apparent from the start. Why then this absence of dialogue? Why the collapse of the Democratic Party? Why let the opposition movement fall into the hands of infantile leftists?

I think the media are greatly to blame. There have been congressional efforts to jump-start a debate. Democratic Sens. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts and Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia have delivered strong and thoughtful speeches opposing the rush to war. They have been largely ignored by the media. Some philanthropist had to pay the New York Times to print the text of Byrd's powerful Feb. 12 speech in a full-page advertisement -- a speech ignored by the media when delivered. The media have played up mass demonstrations at the expense of the reasoned case against the war.

According to polls, a near majority of ill-informed Americans believes Hussein had something to do with the attacks on New York and the Pentagon and resulting massacre of nearly 3,000 innocent people. Hussein is a great villain, but he had nothing to do with 9/11. Many, perhaps most, Americans believe a war against Iraq will be a blow against international terrorism. But evidence from the region indicates very plainly that it will make recruitment much easier for Al Qaeda and other murderous gangs.

What should we have done? What if opposition to war had received a fair break from the media? There are two strong arguments for the war -- that Hussein might down the road acquire nuclear weapons, and that the people of Iraq deserve liberation from his monstrous tyranny.

Unlike biological and chemical weapons, nuclear arms -- and their production facilities -- are hard to conceal. Inspection, surveillance, tapping telephone calls and espionage could check any nuclear initiative on Hussein's part. He is containable, and he is not immortal.

The more powerful argument is humanitarian intervention. This comes with ill grace from an administration that includes people who showed no objections to Hussein's human rights atrocities when he was at war with Iran. But do we have a moral obligation to fight despicable tyrants everywhere?

Hussein is unquestionably a monster. But does that mean we should forcibly remove him from power? "Wherever the standard of freedom and independence has been or shall be unfurled," Adams said in the same July 4 speech, "there will her heart, her benedictions and her prayers be. But she goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy." We are now going abroad to destroy a monster. The aftermath -- how America conducts itself in Iraq and the world -- will provide the crucial test as to whether the war can be justified.

America as the world's self-appointed judge, jury and executioner? "We must face the fact," President John F. Kennedy once said, "that the United States is neither omnipotent nor omniscient -- that we are only 6% of the world's population -- that we cannot impose our will upon the other 94% of mankind -- that we cannot right every wrong or reverse each adversity -- and that therefore there cannot be an American solution to every world problem."

Good stuff - nice Sophomore effort.

They took a really long time to do this because their first album was so great and VERY popular, and they did not want to produce any crap on their sophomore album just because they could. I respect that.

B5 Thoughts/Impressions:
So far I really like the show.

I see how you NEED to watch it in order, from the beginning to do so fully though (which is why I think some of my friends aren't that into it).

I REALLY like the characters. I thinkthat they are well acted and well thought out. I am attached to all of them in some way.

Some of the acting of the supporting people needs some serious work and some of the writing gets a bit cheesy (with big, swelling music in the background) at times, but it's totally overlookable given the overarching thought put into the details of the show.

The CG blows, but it's kinda funny now and I look forward to it in the same way that you look forward to those crappy 3D human pinball rides at the amusement parks. It's become endearing.

I like the play between HUGE things and some silly storyline taht os only one episode. Sometimes you get one, sometimes the other, sometimes both.

Overall, I think it's great and I'm glad that I am being told to do it the way that I am. I can; wait for th erest since Dave tells me that it only gets better.

Giles: The Movie
Sunday, March 16th, 2003...With all the hoopla surrounding the end of UPN's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, there hasn't been much talk of the British Buffy spin-off, The Watcher, that Buffy creator Joss Whedon began developing for the BBC in 2001. The Watcher, a series about the Anthony Stewart Head character Rupert Giles, was relegated to backburner status while Whedon attended to Buffy, Angel and the now-defunct Firefly, but according to Head has finally begun to materialize.
In an interview with the Liverpool Daily Post, Head revealed that he has been in talks with Whedon about the project, which is now taking shape as a feature film. Head told the Daily Post that, "instead of getting himself committed to another hour-long detective show like Angel," Whedon would prefer to do a stand-alone two-hour movie which could potentially launch a series if the interest is there.

The movie, Head said, "would look in depth into the [Giles] character more," and would be produced in Britain, where the London-born actor resides with his family.

"At the moment, that's what I'm looking at," Head added. "It makes more sense all round and I know the BBC are still up for it. Joss has got so many ideas - it's not good for one man."

Besides Buffy, Head can also be seen in the BBC comedy-drama Manchild, which airs here on the BBC America cable channel.

AEON FLUX flick finds a director

The director of GIRLFIGHT, Karyn Kusama, is in final discussions to helm the live-action adaptation of MTV's AEON FLUX.

Based on the cartoon series of the same name created by Peter Chung, AEON FLUX has been in development hell for a number of years at Paramount Pictures. Screenwriters Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay wrote their draft of an AEON FLUX film back in 2000, and it seems that's still the draft that Kusama will be working from.


AEON FLUX first debuted on MTV in 1995 as a series of short animated films following the exploits of female secret agent in a future society. The series quickly developed a strong following and soon the movie rights were picked up by producers Gale Anne Hurd, Bonnie Lee and Diana Phillips. Hurd's Valhalla Motion Pictures film production company remains involved in AEON FLUX's development process.

Today Martha Stewart and some Irish guy told me about roof thatching. The guy who was doing the thatching said there is a tradition where the thatcher guy always leaves a bottle of whiskey hidden in the thatch for the next thatcher to work on the roof. Seemed like a pretty cool tradition... except for the getting drunk and falling off the roof thing.... but I'm sure the policy is- they'll be time enough for drinkin... when the thatching's done.

X-Files 2 In The Works?

Dark Horizons reported a rumor that a second X-Files movie might start by the end of the year. The site based its report on comments made by Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully) on the British talk show Parkinson.

Anderson reportedly told the show that she and David Duchovny (Fox Mulder) have signed on, as have Robert Patrick (John Doggett) and Annabeth Gish (Monica Reyes). She added that the film might be a prequel set before the events of the TV series.

The cast will also include Brian Thompson as the alien bounty hunter and Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner, the site reported.

Sweet: Cusack Eyes Stepford

John Cusack is in talks to star opposite Nicole Kidman in Paramount Pictures' upcoming remake of The Stepford Wives for director Frank Oz and producer Scott Rudin, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie will begin shooting in June.

Cusack's sister, Joan, also stars in the project, marking the seventh time that the siblings have worked together, the trade paper reported.

Stepford is a remake of the 1975 SF thriller film about a woman (Kidman) who moves into a neighborhood where husbands have transformed their wives into robots designed to cater to them. Cusack will play Kidman's husband. Joan Cusack plays Bobbie Markowitz, a hostile, sarcastic, cranky woman who is out of shape and enjoys drinking, but gets transformed into a robot, the trade paper reported.

Paul Rudnick wrote Stepford, which is based on Ira Levin's novel of the same name.

New Line Updating Holmes
New Line Cinema will develop a modern-day version of the Sherlock Holmes story in Holmes and Watson, from Darkness Falls producers William Sherak and Jason Shuman, according to The Hollywood Reporter. James Robinson (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) will write the screenplay, the trade paper reported.

The film will center on the descendants of the legendary sleuth and his sidekick, Dr. Watson, and will be set in modern-day London. The heir to the Holmes legacy will be portrayed as a twentysomething playboy who uses his talents mainly to pick up girls, until he is unwittingly drawn back into the family detective business by a young, sexy Dr. Jane Watson, the trade paper reported.

Farscape is great, though it's been canceled suddenly without warning and it's being left without time for them to wrap up the plot.

The Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5, specifically the episode-by-episode synopses, can be a very handy companion piece to the B5 viewing experience.

Reading the Notes and Analysis sections in the "Midnight on the Firing Line" (first ep) page, for instance, can really help one appreciate later developments in the story arc.

Heck, a ship in one of the first-season episodes was even named after the old home of the Lurker's Guide!

The hardest part there would be to not read ahead.

...at first. For a few seconds my brain was like "My God how many episodes did she watch?!??". Then the exact episode that was from solidified and I realised it was impossible for her to have seen it yet. :)

By the way Kevin's quote comes from the first of 2 B-5 Episodes to win the Hugo.

Every Wednesday that had a new episode for 3 1/2 years my best friend and I (he joined in at second season) would watch B-5. HIm being British we would always look for the best insults to be thrown out (they get better later), and there's a certain short smarmy looking guy in black who would always get a "warm" welcome whenever he showed up in an episode. Oh man some of them are great.

It's leagues better then The Gathering... You can kind of think of the rest of the show in this way... every batch of 5 or so episodes you go, you've stumbeled into a better batch then the last. That holds true till 5'th season where it stops to take a breath before the ending. Enjoy :)
