Re: Woman Trampled In Shopping Frenzy
Another blogger put it best:
"Putting a DVD player on hold? I think when one almost dies in line at Wal-Mart, they should at least get a free DVD player delivered to the hospital room."

Woman Trampled In Shopping Frenzy or It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
According to this AP story a Florida woman was knocked unconcious by a mob of shoppers eager to get a $29.99 DVD player at Wal-Mart. That certainly sounds like a splendid way to celebrate the birthday of our lord and savior. :-/ Oh, but on the bright side, the Wal-Mart evidently is unhappy about what happened to the woman and offered to put the DVD player on hold for her, while she recuperates in the hospital. And who says they're a horrible, soulless megacorp?

Minn. Man Burns Down Garage While Cooking
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) - Bill Fickett wanted to give his wife a break from the kitchen on Thanksgiving, so he offered to cook. His kind gesture ended up causing about $14,000 in damage.

"I don't know how it happened,'' Fickett said. "My wife just had a baby, so I said I'd take care of the turkey.''

He decided to try his hand at deep-fat frying a turkey. He borrowed a fryer and got directions from a friend. He bought a thermometer to make sure the oil didn't get too hot.

Fickett said he was heating up about 3 gallons of oil before the fire started. He adjusted the temperature to the recommended 350 degrees, then stepped into the house to get the bird.

Next thing he knew, smoke was pouring out of the garage.

By the time firefighters got there Thursday afternoon, the garage was in flames, said Gene Kostreba, acting assistant fire chief. He said the fire was contained to the garage, which was
destroyed. Fickett said it was insured.

No one was injured. The fire was still under investigation, Kostreba said.

Fickett and his family still had a nice Thanksgiving dinner.

"We just had to have chicken instead of turkey,'' he said. ``I'll probably stick to baking them now.''

Thai Man Stuck with His German Husband
BERLIN (Reuters) - A Thai man who masqueraded as a woman to wed a German man has failed to get the marriage annulled, and now seems saddled with his husband.

A German court dismissed the Thai's request for an annulment because same-sex marriages are not recognized in Germany, and therefore cannot be reversed.

"I don't know why they got married, whether it was love or the desire for a residence permit," said Ulrich Skwirblies, a spokesman for the court in the western town of Celle.

The 42-year-old Thai married the man in Denmark under a false name in 1994 and was later granted German residency.

Raging Grannies
Wow. The world never ceases to amaze me.

So there's this group of old ladies in Seattle called the Raging Grannies.

What are they pissed about? Actually, something useful:
"We are enraged about the poor conditions that people are forced to endure in their lives, and about the condition of the earth that will be left to our precious grandchildren. We sing out to gain respect for all persons and encourage everyone to grow above their prejudices. We rage against "corporate greed" and sign for "one world" in which JUSTICE is evident everywhere and PEACE reigns. "

You can even start your own. Wendy, I propose we add this to the action plan right after getting 14 cats.

The LA County Office of Affirmative Action Compliance has asked that electronics manufacturers refrain from labelling pieces of hardware as "master" and "slave" after an employee saw some cameras marked that way and filed an Affirmative Action complaint. The department has determined that the terms are "unacceptable" and "offensive." I thought this was an Onion article at first. This clearly wins the most ridiculous bitching award of the week. SEAQUEST actor's death ruled a suicide
The Los Angeles coroner's office has ruled the death of SEAQUEST DSV actor Jonathan Brandis a suicide. The findings were released yesterday.

Brandis' body was found November 12 by friends. A former teen star who headlined the feature films THE NEVERENDING STORY 2, LADYBUGS and SIDEKICKS, in recent years the charismatic actor had found work in smaller independent films and by starring in supporting roles in larger Hollywood films. Brandis was only 27.

Burton No Fan Of Wonka
Tim Burton, who will direct Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, told SCI FI Wire that he has no great love for the first film adaptation of Roald Dahl's children's book, 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. "I find [Willy Wonka] odd, because it's overly sweet when it shouldn't be, and it's really dark when it's really weird, so I found it to be almost exactly wrong in some ways," Burton said in an interview.

Burton said that he is awaiting a script before revealing details of his version of the beloved story. But he confirmed earlier reports that he will cast Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. "I love working with him," Burtons said. "I've worked with him three times. He's my friend. [He] always surprises [me]. I like these kind of actors [who] don't care how they look. They're just willing, and there's a freedom to that and an excitement that I get from that. [Some] people are like, 'Wait, my light's not right,' or 'I'm not coming out of my trailer until this happens or that.' [People like Depp] are people ready to go."

Warner Brothers plans to release Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005.

Earth
Your element is Earth. I hate to say it but you are down to earth. Stubborn and loyal. You tend to want to nurture others and you are the one person friends always come to for awnsers. Without people like you others would be flying over the edge because, whether you know it or not you keep a steady beat to your life and will end up where you want to in the end. There is a sureness about you that is hard to match that draws people to you. No matter what happens the Earth keeps turning.

Helena Bonham-Carter, who will provide the voice of Lady Tottington in the upcoming stop-motion animated film The Wallace and Gromit Movie, told SCI FI Wire that she catches the eye of Wallace, the cheese-loving master of the resourceful dog, Gromit. "I'm Wallace's love interest," Bonham-Carter (Planet of the Apes) said in an interview.

Bonham-Carter added, "She's nine inches tall, she's plasticine, and she's like the lady of a manor." Han shot first, not Greedo! Anything else is apocryphal!
Rumors over at SciFi Wire:
More Star Wars Changes Due?
The Digital Bits Web site is reporting a rumor that George Lucas plans more changes to his original Star Wars trilogy of films. Citing anonymous sources, the site reported that the changes will include new special effects, revised and updated shots and scenes and new footage shot with prequel actors Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker) and Ian McDiarmid (the Emperor) that would flesh out moments with their characters in the original films.

For example, an aged and scarred Hayden will now appear as Anakin at the end of Return of the Jedi, when Luke removes Darth Vader's helmet, the site reported. Among the other rumored changes:

•The original Star Wars movie will restore the moment when Han Solo (Harrison Ford) shoots Greedo first.

•Lucas will revamp the lightsaber fight between Obi-Wan (Alec Guinness) and Vader.

Boy Sold to Restaurant as Dog Meat
HANOI (Reuters) - Vietnamese drug addicts kidnapped a mute teenager, bundled him in a sack and sold him to a dog-meat eatery as a stray canine, state media said on Saturday. The Gia Dinh Xa Hoi (Family and Society) newspaper said the two addicts grabbed the homeless 13-year-old from a busy market in Halong city. Halong, around 90 miles from the capital, Hanoi, attracts hordes of tourists to its spectacular bay and rock formations, a United Nations heritage site. The kidnappers tied up the boy, bundled him into a sack and sold him to the restaurant for $19, the newspaper said. The restaurateur, shocked to find the boy, fed him and released him. Police were investigating the case but had made no arrests, said the newspaper, mouthpiece of the state Population, Family and Children Committee. Dog meat is a delicacy in parts of China and in some other Asian countries such as Korea, Cambodia, Indonesia and Laos. In Vietnam, eating specifically farmed breeds is believed to bring health benefits and is seen as auspicious. Early in November, Thai police rescued more than 800 dogs from smugglers who were taking the animals to Vietnam to sell for meat.

Interesting (or not) things about today
So, after Layer Hell, I have on my list to do the IEEE updates to their online calendar grid (don't ask, it involves hours of tediously creating pages that all link to one another and to an online calendar). THEN, for those of you who understand the term "blue dots", I get to do those. In moments of sheer boredom, I have the luxury of following up on The Pet Pantry stuff as it is all waiting on Jon at the moment, who is being taken over completely by George.

We (G and I) had an ACTUAL conversation that went something like this yesterday:

George: I am really disappointed that TPP isn't moving faster.

Me: Well, it is all up to Jon right now and you have him working on something else and he won't even talk to me.

George: That's true.... (blah blah about how important said thing is).

Me: Well, I don't really care about that project at all because it's not mine, but I don't want to hear from you about TPP if you aren't going to assign the resources I need to get it done.

George: I am really disappointed that TPP isn't moving faster. I was hoping it would get done before I went on vacation.

Me: Do you understand that you actually have control over whether or not that happens?

George: What do you mean?

Me: Sigh.

Anyway, at least after that I get a yummy dinner with some cool people....

re: Stuck in Layer Hell today
So, after 6.5 hours of layer crap involving lots of making clear images not show any layers, I am done.

I am cross-eyed, but I am done.

Need general advice.
I am in the market for some comfortable and yet really good sounding over the ear earphones.

I am willing to spend 100- 150 if necessary but don't need to by any standard.

Let me know if you have any recommendations.

Stuck in Layer Hell today
So, while perusing some of my maintenance clients' sites, I noticed that TRC has the most F*&ked up side navigation I have ever seen. It shows up as screwed in every person's browser, though differently every time. The code is crap and nearly unreadable and the onLoad and onMouseOver comands are all confused.

I think to myself "Self, how did you let this happen?"

Self replied, "Shawn did that. He did the re-org when it was his client."

I say, "Are you kidding me? Jesus Christ that sucks."

Self nods, "Yep, and because you only have to deal with the shopsite most of the time, you didn't notice. You shoud pay more attention...."

And the conversation digressed into me arguing with myself about how I don't have enough time as it is (says the girl blogging because the boss is out) vs. how much I hate it when things aren't done properly.

To make a long story slightly shorter, I am now re-doing the side nav for TRC, but I have some major pains in the ass to deal with:
1) I hate the site to begin with. It's stupid and looks amaturish, but they won;t let me change it.
2) The buttons look like crap, but my head hurts thinking about cutting them all out again and the psd is already fuzzy
3) There are 26 layers involved, all of which need to be told which other layers to look at when they are looked at.

Sigh.

Record Drug Haul Goes Up in Smoke

SAO PAULO, Brazil (Reuters) - Police began burning 20 tons of marijuana and cocaine in a steel furnace on Tuesday in the biggest ever incineration of drugs seized in Sao Paulo, Brazil's most populous state.

"About 95 percent is marijuana. This was the year for marijuana," said Antonio Carlos Silveira, a spokesman for Denarc, the police's narcotics investigation division. Police have seized a record 25 tons of marijuana in Sao Paulo state this year, five times more than in 2002, he said.

The incineration should take up to 10 hours, Silveira said.

The steel furnace was the same one used when Brazil claimed a world record for a drugs incineration in mid-2001 when police burned 140 tons of marijuana and cocaine seized across the country over a period of 12 months.

The 2003 Leonid meteor shower began on Nov. 13th with a mild flurry of meteors over the Pacific Ocean. It continues on Wednesday morning, Nov. 19th, with a much stronger peak over the Americas and western Europe.

Sky watchers on the Atlantic side of North America are favored; they could see as many as 80 meteors per hour between 1:30 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. local time. Western Europeans and South Americans ought to have a good view, too, shortly before local sunrise. (All these times refer to Wednesday morning, Nov. 19th.)

In western North America and around the Pacific Ocean the display will be weaker, perhaps 20 to 40 meteors per hour, but that's still a nice shower. Favored sites include Alaska and Hawaii before dawn on Nov. 19th and Japan after local midnight on Nov. 20th. [more]

Quantum Crypto For Real
I had no idea that quantum cryptography was so far along that commercial products could be made, but according to this article it is. I am a little leery of statements like: "We'll stop this race. We'd like to have a system that's forever secure," however. Smacks of "unsinkable ship" to me.

Buffy star favourite to play Dr Who
LONDON (Reuters) - Buffy star Anthony Head has been voted in a poll of Radio Times readers as their favourite to play the next Dr Who.

Head, who plays Giles in the cult US television series "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", beat Alan Rickman into second place.

"I suppose I would be a logical choice to play the Doctor just because Giles, my character in Buffy, has the same light and dark sides and quirkiness as Doctor Who," Head told the listings magazine on Monday.

Comedians Stephen Fry and Alan Davies were third and fourth and actor Ian Richardson was fifth.

The BBC have not announced who will play the sci-fi legend but British media say Richard E. Grant, Bill Nighy and Eddie Izzard are being considered.

The cult series aired from 1963-1989. It will return to television screens in 2005.

Cheering for Change
More "Furthermore" goodness from Wired News:
Cheerleaders aren't just about short skirts, pep and pompoms anymore. The Radical Cheerleaders, an international network of mostly young female activists, define their sport as "protest plus performance. It's activism with pompoms and middle fingers extended." The left-wing Radical Cheerleaders have used the same moves employed by high-school pep squads to demand livable wages at an Alabama Taco Bell, protest war on Boston Common and show their support for gay rights in the Saskatchewan Pride Parade. "We do for our fellow activists what cheerleaders do for sports players: We get people going," said one cheerleader. How do other demonstrators respond to the good cheer? "I was so excited to find people doing activism who were having a good time," said one protester.

Getting into the Christmas spirit, I guess...
Three men died on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates. "In honor of this holy season," Saint Peter said, "you must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas to get into heaven."

The first man fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. It represents a candle, hesaid.
You may pass through the pearly gates Saint Peter said.

The second man reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them and said, "They're bells". Saint Peter said you may pass through the pearly gates.

The third man started searching desperately through his pockets and finally pulled out a pair of women's panties. St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, "And just what do those symbolize?" The man replied,
"They're Carols".

re: Grave Situation
So, first of all, there's two sides of my brain on this one.

First, we sent people off to war, you shouldn't expect ANY of them to come back. That's what war is. People are in the mindset that all wars are like the one we fought in the Gulf last time, where no one actually gets hurt on our side. It's really sad that people have to die in order to get the point across that PEOPLE DIE IN WAR(!!!) and if you actually support a war, you are supporting sending people to their deaths. People are so used to war costing nothing but money that they will support anything that the idiots in the oval office do at this point. While I am saddened that these people have to die, I think it may cost more than that before idiots throught this coutry get that war is not free or costless. If the people didn't support an idiodic venture into Iraq in the first place (let alone electing a lunatic that thought that it was a good idea), no one would have died.

Also, public opinion is falling because 400 people died?!?! Jesus Christ, the man has RAPED the environment with a shovel and **NOW** people are starting to falter??? What about all the people that will die slow, painful, cancerous deaths because of the ecological effects of what he is doing to the planet???

People have their priorities all fu*&ed up.

That's my rant. Sorry if it offended you.

From Wired News' Furthermore
Grave Situation
The rising death toll in Iraq has reached a sobering benchmark: More American soldiers have been killed in Iraq than were killed during the first three years of the Vietnam War. The U.S. Defense Department recorded 392 U.S. fatalities in Vietnam from 1962 through 1964, when approximately 17,000 American troops were deployed in Indochina. As of Wednesday, American deaths in Iraq totaled 397. About 130,000 U.S. soldiers are positioned in Iraq now. Another 91 soldiers have died in battle zones outside Iraq since Oct. 7, 2001, as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. As the death toll escalates, recent polls show concern over the situation in Iraq is growing and public support for President Bush is eroding.

Queer Eye for the Straight Guy
So, I got a chance to see this show last night. It was actually pretty great. What I can't figure out is how they get that many really hot straight guys who are so totally willing to do whatever these gay guys tell them to (including cuddle them in the clothing store). All of the guys seem to be these really sweet men with super controlling girlfriends who are more interested in the house makeover than the guy makeover.

Anyway, it's hysterical. There's a marathon on this weekend on Bravo starting at 1 if you are interested...

Rings, Potter Parody Due
MGM is developing Henry Bates and the Sorcerer's Balls, a film spoof of the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings franchises, Variety reported. Written by David Morgasen, James R. Stein and Timothy Stack (Son of the Beach), Bates will be produced by Ricky Strauss under his Ricochet Films banner, the trade paper reported.

In the parody, the wizard Gandolfini battles the evil wizard Enron, with the help of Henry Bates, the rightful king of the land of Middlefinger, the trade paper reported.

MGM bought the script days ago and has already engaged the writers for a two-week polish, indicating the studio plans to move quickly.

Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter?
Is this old news, or what? This movie (which I found out from a friend's blog) looks so amazingly cheesy as to be amazingly amusing, as long as you don't mind the hideous, hideous blasphemy. In the studio's own words:
"The second coming is upon us, and Jesus has returned to earth. But before he can get down to the serious business of judging the living and the dead, he has to contend with an army of vampires that can walk in the daylight.

Combining kung-fu action with biblical prophecy and a liberal dose of humour, the film teams the Savior with Mexican wrestling hero El Santos against mythological horrors and science gone mad, and also manages to address contemporary sexual politics. And did we mention that it's a musical?

This sure ain't Sunday School."

APotD: An Intermediate Polar Binary System

Explanation: How can two stars create such a strange and intricate structure? Most stars are members of multiple-star systems. Some stars are members of close binary systems where material from one star swirls around the other in an accretion disk. Only a handful of stars, however, are members of an intermediate polar, a system featuring a white dwarf star with a magnetic field that significantly pushes out the inner accretion disk, only allowing material to fall down its magnetic poles. Shown above is an artist's depiction of an intermediate polar system, also known as a DQ Hercules system. The foreground white dwarf is so close to the normal star that it strips away its outer atmosphere. As the white dwarf spins, the columns of infalling gas rotate with it. The name intermediate polar derives from observations of emitted light polarized at a level intermediate to non-disk binary systems known as polars. Intermediate polars are a type of cataclysmic variable star system.

Singapore Policeman Gets Two Years for Oral Sex
SINGAPORE (Reuters) - A Singaporean police sergeant has been jailed for two years for having oral sex in a country where prostitution is legal but oral sex is not, a newspaper reported Friday.

The Straits Times reported that the 27-year-old police coast guard sergeant landed in court after a 16-year-old reported to the police that she had performed oral sex on the man.

She was above the age of consent and agreed to perform the act, but oral sex is against the law in the city-state, the paper said.

"The act by itself is an offence. It is not a question of consent or no consent. Even between consenting people, it is an offence," criminal lawyer Subhas Anandan told the paper.

The maximum punishment for the offence is life imprisonment.

Well, I guess Singapore is off the list then....

b) The Tango is a dance made famous in Argentina. "Erotic licking" plays no part in the Tango. Neither, of course, do balloons.

c) only a lunatic would apply shoe-polish to a weasel.

d) if the alleged incidents had in fact occurred in broad daylight during a car-boot sale in Harrow then there would be photographs, and quite possibly a plaster cast.

e) by now the "Use by" stamps on the yoghurt would have expired, indicating it as unfit for human consumption.

This journal trusts that this clears up the matter once and for all.

Screwing the Clean Water Act, Too
Clean water safeguards weakened
Los Angeles Times

WASHINGTON - Bush administration officials have drafted a rule that would significantly narrow the scope of the Clean Water Act, stripping many wetlands and streams of federal pollution controls and making them available to being filled for commercial development.

The rule, spelled out in an internal document provided to the Los Angeles Times by a senior government official, says Clean Water Act protection would no longer be provided to ``ephemeral washes or streams'' that do not have groundwater as a source. Streams that flow for less than six months a year would also lose protection, as would many wetlands, according to the document.

State and federal officials have estimated that up to 20 million acres of wetlands could lose protection. The impact would be greater in California and other parts of the West, where many streams flow only seasonally.

"Oh yeah, aight. Aight, I put on my robe and wizard hat. "

Halloween rage
Now this is just F&^ked up.

November
So I decided to take November and relax, not do too much, read, clean, and generally enjoy my house before I have to break up with it :-(

This weekend was good stuff on that front, although I did mostly the resting part and not nearly enough of the cleaning part :-)

Note question 9....

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Fraser Still Up For Superman

Brendan Fraser told SCI FI Wire that he is still in the running for the coveted title role in Warner Brothers's upcoming Superman film, based on the DC Comics character. "I'm interested," Fraser said in an interview while promoting his latest film, Looney Tunes: Back In Action. "I have been approached about it. It is a possibility. It really comes down to, I think, decisions made [at the] studio level way up on high." [more]

That's just WRONG.

Word of the Day: potemkin village (po-TEM-kin VIL-ij) noun
An impressive showy facade designed to mask undesirable facts.

[After Prince Potemkin, who erected cardboard villages for Catherine II's
visit to the Ukraine and the Crimea in 1787.]

"And that raises the key question: is SBC serious? ... Or is this all a
Potemkin village, meant to impress regulators?"
Seth Schiesel, SBC Is Going National With Its Local Service, The New York
Times, Oct 9, 2000.

Re: Holy crap! / Court Shooting

Cool Matrix update from JMS

Just to let fans of the Matrix know...you've got nothing to worry about with the third film. I was at the premiere screening Monday, and I have to tell you that the sheer scale and scope of the thing, the performances, the efx, the story...it's just staggering.

(And for those who want to know how I look these days, there's a photo -- twice clickable and enlargeable -- at --

-- which should definitely drive down any interest in the movie.

Anyway...the brothers W did an amazing job. It's going to be huge.

Apparently, you can adopt a book at the British Library.

The 40 greatest US bands today, part one
The Guardian posted this and it's fairly interesting to see their take:
Three weeks ago we published a list of the artists who have made British rock and pop music exciting again. The response was so remarkable we've decided to repeat the exercise - with Americans. We hope you enjoy it.
