I found out that back in the day Hawaiians had some pretty strict environmental laws. To keep balanced with nature they protected certain species of fish or animals around mating season or whatever. If stocks got depleted they'd hold off on fishing that fish till the fish restocked. The punishment for catching fish during a protected or sacred time? Death by strangulation. Done and done. Yeeaah Poiii!
Here's more info on the long lost Hawaiian Kapu system.

Traffic Chaos as Hearse Ejects Corpse
BERLIN (Reuters) - A hearse overturned on a German motorway Wednesday, shattering the coffin and ejecting the corpse onto the tarmac along with a bag of coffin nails that brought traffic to a standstill, authorities said.
"The driver had fallen asleep at the wheel and yanked the steering wheel round when he woke up," said Jens O'Brien, spokesman for the regional government in Duesseldorf, western Germany. "There were nails strewn over 50 meters and the corpse fell out onto the ground." The A40 motorway was closed for an hour and there was a 4-mile back-up as police collected the coffin nails and took the corpse away. The hearse had not been driving to a funeral but had been transporting the body from Wuerzburg in southern Germany. The undertaker was slightly hurt.

I wish I had woken up earlier so I could have gone walking outside. I love it after the rain.
I did however, get informed that my thermostat's batteries are dead so I couldn't turn on the heat. I woke up in the fridge this morning and decided to stay in my down womb until it was absolutley necessary to move to the warm water womb.

Some Lyrics for Halloween
Rob Zombie - Dragula
dead I am the one
exterminating sun
slipping through the trees
strangling the breeze
dead I am the sky
watching angels cry
as they slowly turn
conquering the worm
dead I am the pool
spreading from the fool
weak and want you need
nowhere as you bleed
dead I am the rat
feast upon cat
tender is the fur
dying as you purr
dig through the ditches
burn through the witches
I slam in the back of my
dragula
dig through the ditches
burn through the witches
I slam in the back of my
dragula
do it baby, do it baby
burn like an animal
do it baby, do it baby
burn like an animal
dead I am the life
dig into the skin
knuckle crack the bone
21 to win
dead I am the dog
hound of hell you cry
devil on your back
I can never die
dig through the ditches
burn through the witches
I slam in the back of my

dig through the ditches
burn through the witches
I slam in the back of my

Potter V Causes Headaches
Washington doctor has warned that he has seen three children complain of headaches caused by the physical stress of relentlessly plowing through the 870 pages of the fifth Harry Potter novel, Reuters reported. Howard Bennett of George Washington University Medical Center wrote in a letter to this week's New England Journal of Medicine that the three children, ages 8 to 10, experienced a dull headache for two or three days, the news service reported.
Each had spent many hours reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. After ruling out other potential causes, Bennett told his patients to give their eyes a rest, which the children declined. "If this escalation continues as Rowling concludes the saga, there may be an epidemic of Hogwarts headaches in the years to come," Bennett told Reuters.

The Returner
Saw the Japanese SF-action movie The Returner last night. It was entertaining on a couple different levels. Some of the effects and fight scenes were really good, a la John Woo's work. The dialogue, on the other hand (or perhaps the translations, little of the movie was in English) was so very, very bad that at times I had tears running down my face because I was laughing so hard. The story is about a girl who comes back from the future to save the world from an alien invasion who winds up in the middle of a vendetta between a mysterious killer and the Triad boss he opposes. Hmm, that sounds kinda silly when you write it down. Anyway, it was fun, if not great cinema.

Quiz: Which Mythological Form Are You?

You are Form 3,
Unicorn: The Innocent.
"And The Unicorn knew she wasn't meant to go into the Dark Wood. Disregarding the advice given to her by the spirits, Unicorn went inside and bled silver blood.. For her misdeed, the world knew evil."
Some examples of the Unicorn Form are Eve (Christian) and Pandora (Greek). The Unicorn is associated with the concept of innocence, the number 3, and the element of water.
Her sign is the twilight sun.
As a member of Form 3, you are a curious individual. You are drawn to new things and become fascinated with ideas you've never come in contact with before. Some people may say you are too nosey, but it's only because you like getting to the bottom of things and solving them. Unicorns are the best friends to have because they are inquisitive.
Ok, who thinks I am innocent? Raise your hand!
Changed two that I was on the fence about:
You are Form 5,
Dragon: The Weaver.
"And The Dragon seperated the virtuous from the sinful. He tore his eyes from his sockets and used them to peer into the souls of those on trial to make a judgement. He knew that with endless knowledge came endless responsibility."
Some examples of the Dragon Form are Athena (Greek), St. Peter (Christian), and Surya (Indian). The Dragon is associated with the concept of intelligence, the number 5, and the element of wood. His sign is the crescent moon.
As a member of Form 5, you are an intelligent and wise individual. You weigh options by looking at how logical they are and you know that while there may not always be a right or wrong choice, there is always a logical one. People may say you are too indecisive, but it's only because you want to do what's right. Dragons are the best friends to have because they're willing to learn.

Spike plays with WILD THINGS
Director Spike Jonze (BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, ADAPTATION) has found his next job, and it's adapting Maurice Sendak's classic childrens book WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE as a live-action movie for Universal Pictures. Tom Hanka and Gary Goetzman will produce the film through their Playtone Productions company. Sendak is also a producer on the film as well as John Carls.
WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE tells the story of a young boy named Max who, after going to bed one night, fantasizes that there exists a forest of "wild things" that want to have Max live with them in their forest. The project has been in development for a number of years, at one time slated to be created as an animated project.
Police Watch Abducted Gnomes Gather Dust
PARIS (Reuters) - A French police station has been stuck with a room of homeless garden gnomes, victims of a wave of gnome abductions, after a fresh bid to trace their owners failed.
Only a trickle of people showed up for Monday's "gnome return day" at the police station in Saint-Die-des-Vosges, near the eastern city of Strasbourg, and only one person was reunited with their stolen gnome, police said.
Some 75 kidnapped gnomes were recovered in 2001 after a group called the Garden Gnome Liberation Front released them, leaving them on the steps of the Saint-Die-des-Vosges cathedral. Police are yet to reunite 43 of the gnomes with their owners.
"In wanting to set them free, the Liberation Front has virtually imprisoned them," policeman Sylvain Brucker told Reuters, adding that the local prosecutor could decide to sell the kitsch garden ornaments in a police auction.
"Perhaps there are people with gardens who would like to adopt them," he said.

re: Moving forward using all my breath
SO apparently, Kyle was getting his inspiration from me before I was getting it from him.
That line, as known to me only when sung, is the opening line from Melt With You, by Modern English that I had up as the SotD a few weeks ago.
Nice to know my mantra is from a song I love....
Melt With You by Modern English
Moving forward using all my breath
Making love to you was never second best
I saw the world thrashing all around your face
Never really knowing it was always mesh and lace
I'll stop the world and melt with you
You've seen the difference and
It's getting better all the time
There's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you
(You should know better )
Dream of better lives the kind which never hate
(You should see why)
Dropped in the state of imaginary grace
(You should know better )
I made a pilgrimage to save this human race
(You should see why)
Never comprehending a race that long gone by
(I'll stop the world )
I'll stop the world and melt with you
(I'll stop the world )
You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time
(Let's stop the world )
There's nothing you and I won't do
(Let's stop the world )
I'll stop the world and melt with you
The future's open wide
(Let's stop the world )
I'll stop the world and melt with you
(Let's stop the world )
I've seen some changes but it's getting better all the time
(Let's stop the world )
There's nothing you and I won't do
(Let's stop the world )
I'll stop the world and melt with you
The future's open wide
hmmm hmmm hmmm
hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm
hmmm hmmm hmmm
hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm
I'll stop the world and melt with you
(Let's stop the world )
You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time
(Let's stop the world )
There's nothing you and I won't do
(Let's stop the world )
I'll stop the world and melt with you

For those of you who don't normally listen to the song of the day, I would suggest that if you have the access and you haven't heard some of this stuff (like today's for example, it's obscure if you do not normally listen to techno), to go ahead and give it 10 minutes of your life.
You'd be surprised at the types of music you thought were one thing and you didn't like, that are actually something totally different, and you, in fact, do.
Moving forward using all my breath
So, I was peeking over at Kyle's AIM profile (he changes it daily so it's interesting), and I saw this: moving forward using all my breath.
I was, for a moment, stalled.
That's exactly how I feel.
It's poignant, but not depressing. It's a statement that proposes progress without dodging how difficult it is. It is a resounding statement that defines my year.
I think I shall take that one into my archive as the definitive statement for 2003.
Moving toward "kicked major ass" for 2004....

What's in a Name? Everything When the Name is Butt
LONDON (Reuters) - A British couple have been forced to move house because of the shame caused by the name of their street -- Butt Hole Road.
Paul and Lisa Allott sold their $250,000 bungalow in Conisbrough, northern England after living there for just 15 months, fed up with the constant leg-pulling.
Taxis and pizza delivery men would fail to turn up, thinking their order was just a prank, and they grew tired with groups of youths posing for photos by the nearby street sign with their buttocks bared.

Ridley`s DARK MATERIALS?
According to a Monty Python member, yup.
Reports are flying across the web and in our inbox about a BBC radio interview that Monty Python member Terry Jones gave yesterday. According to our friends across the Atlantic, Jones said that none other than director Ridley Scott (ALIEN, MATCHSTICK MEN) is now attached to helm the first movie in Philip Pullman's HIS DARK MATERIALS book trilogy. New Line Cinema has the rights to Pullman's novels, with the first book, THE GOLDEN COMPASS, having been adapted into screenplay format by Tom Stoppard (SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE).
HIS DARK MATERIALS is an epic fantasy with equal elements for young readers and adults, with the story's main characters being two different children living in parallel worlds. There are loads of interesting places and creatures scattered throughout the novels, with a monumental task facing the children that reveals the very nature of their two universes.
No official word has been forthcoming from New Line that Scott is indeed attached to direct the picture -- at least, not yet.
OK, so these books ROCK. I loved the story. Highly recommended for some easy reading...

Public Announcement
So, last night I got a call from Zak Akin.
A friend of mine (who is also Zak's roomate)'s girlfriend, who we all knew and hung out with, had passed away that night.
She was diabetic and did not take care of herself. She went into a diabetic coma and then her heart stopped.
I called my friend just now and he is holding up, but obviously not ok.
I am taking the lesson to love my friends while they are here, and to forgive the things that are unimportant, both for my friends and for myself.
I'm not telling you all this because it's sad or I am upset, more as a general announcement so I can stop telling people individually and also so I get the chance to say that I love you to all of you and am glad to have you in my life.
I hope that you all are having a good day!
Spaceweather news
Sunspot 484, which first appeared this past weekend, has grown into one of the biggest sunspots in years. Now about the size of the planet Jupiter, it's easy to see. But never look directly at the sun! Visit
Spaceweather.com for safe solar observing tips.
Meanwhile, say forecasters, another big sunspot could soon appear near the sun's southeastern limb. The active region is not yet directly visible, but the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) has seen material being blasted over the sun's limb from the approaching spot.
Major eruptions are possible from these active regions as they rotate across the face of the sun over the next two weeks.

In the following interview, Rosemann addresses many issues, including new company goals, the Bridges program, HeroClix, the fate of MegaCon and the handling of the freelancer situation. No one was hurt in the incident in Potsdam. She later calmed down and watched another television with her children.

Arnold Meets w/ Bush
Here's the actual news story.
And here is a blurb about it from sfgate.com's Morning Fix mailing list:
President Bush and Arnold Schwarzenegger met privately Thursday, during which much snorting and guffawing and words of oh-my-freaking-god-can-you-freaking-believe-we-both-got-elected, I-mean-wow-people-sure-are-suckers were exchanged, then praised each other in a joint appearance afterwards. The mediocre actor and thick-necked slab of monster ego actually called Bush "the greatest ally this golden state has in Washington." Oh yes he did. Immediately after which the entire state of California cringed and recoiled and felt a sour tightening of that bitter knot deep in its stomach, the one that said, holy mother of Christ what the f**k have we done, and is it too late to take it all back, because we were a little drunk and probably high and holy s**t we are so very, very screwed.

In sanity it seems ,

Well all the love from me,
With all these dying trees I scream .
The Angels in my dreams ,
have turned to demons of greed ,
That's me.
Where I go I just don't know ,
I got to, got to, gotta take it slow .
When I find my piece of mind ,
I'm gonna give you some of my good time .
Today loves smile on me,
It took away my pain , said please
All that you ride is free ,
You gotta let it be,
Oh ya.
Where I go I just don't know ,
I got to, gotta , gotta take it slow .
When I find my piece of mind ,
I'm gonna give you some of my good time .
You're so polite indeed ,
Well I got everything I need .
Oh make my days a breeze ,
And take away my self destruction .
It's bitter baby ,
And it's very sweet .
I'm on a rollercoaster ,
but I'm on my feet .
Take me to the river ,
Let me on your shore .
I be coming back baby ,
I be coming back for more .
Doo doo doo doo dingle zing a dong bone ,
ba-di ba-da ba-zumba crunga cong gone bad,
like an apple gift but i went out and never said my pleasures
I'm much better but I won't regret it never

In 1997 Gaiman wrote an episode for the final season of cult TV show "Babylon 5", 'The Day of the Dead', the only episode in the last three seasons not to have been written by the show's creator, J. Michael Straczynski.

more]
Really, they should worry less about whether it is illegal to say it in schools and worry more about whether it is offensive to those of us who love our country but not necessarily other people's Gods. Maybe they should re-write it so it's ACTUALLY patriotic, rather than just banning it.... or, hey, just go back to the way it was orginally written with no refernces to God (concept!).
Edit: This is in the article: "Democrats and Republicans in Congress criticized the decision and quickly passed a law affirming references to God in the pledge and the national motto, "In God We Trust." President Bush, who signed the measure, called the appeals court decision ridiculous. "
Well that's fu&^ed up.
Look, I'm all for religious freedom, and all for people who choose to believe. More power to them for believing in something. However, it's not only offensive to those of us who just don't, but what about other religions that don't have one or the samae God? Don't AFFIRM something that a large chunk of your population doesn't belive in! I have had religiond pushed on me all my life, and I even did the responsible thing and learned about many different ones in case I wanted to choose one, but I don;t need it forced on me by a government that supposedly belives in separation of church and state.

Y: THE LAST MAN and FOUNDATION scoops confirmed
Variety has confirmed our exclusive story about screenwriter Jeff Vintar being hired to adapt the DC/Vertigo comic book Y: THE LAST MAN as a feature film for New Line Cinema. Vintar will follow his work on Y by adapting Isaac Asimov's FOUNDATION novel as two separate screenplays for 20th Century Fox, to be possibly directed by Shekhar Kapur.
The FOUNDATION screenplays will base their source material on three of Asimov's novels, FOUNDATION, FOUNDATION AND EARTH and SECOND FOUNDATION. As our source told us, Vintar's two scripts will be titled FOUNDATION and SECOND FOUNDATION.
So, for all of you out there, Y: The Last Man is a really good comic - it's only on issue 14 or so and there's a GN due out soon I think... It's about a guy who somehow manages to be the last man on earth, and he's trapped there with a couple billion women. It's not nearly the fantasy everyone thinks it would be....

Henson Closer To Neverwhere
Kristine Belson of Jim Henson Productions told SCI FI Wire that the company is ready to move forward with the feature adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere as soon as they acquire a willing financier. "We are trying to get Neverwhere made," Belson said. "We have had a frustrating series of stops and starts on that movie. Right now, after being with a financier who we were getting ready to make the movie with, we're now once again looking for financing."
The best-selling fantasy novel, originally written as a miniseries for the BBC, explores the mythical realm of London Below, which exists in the sewers and subway tunnels beneath the city. Canadian director Vincenzo Natali (Cube) has signed on to direct, with screenwriter Matt Drake revising the script originally written by Gaiman. "We're actually just about to go out with a script that no one's seen," she said. "We're going to approach everybody in town and see if they want to finance it."
Belson remains confident that the quality of the story will lure investors once they have a chance to read the script. "It really draws people in," Belson said. "I'm convinced that whoever we get with next is finally going to pull the trigger. So we'll see."

MGM Wants Steve Martin for Pink Panther
MGM has offered Steve Martin the lead role of Inspector Clouseau in Birth of the Pink Panther, hoping that Martin will spearhead the rebirth of the comic franchise originated by Peter Sellers. Len Blum wrote the script for Montecito partners Ivan Reitman and Tom Pollock. If a deal can be worked out, Martin would star in the film in 2004.
MGM has been trying for years to rebirth the "Pink Panther" franchise, which placed bumbling crime fighter Inspector Clouseau in high-level crime situations that always resulted in strong pratfall and farcical comedy.
Blum's prequel script has the inept sleuth assigned to solve the murder of the nation's soccer team coach while investigating the disappearance of the legendary Pink Panther diamond. That bauble, the national treasure of the Eastern state of Lugash, frequently disappeared in the earlier Panther pics.

Dream Diet?
A teen who suffered from fainting spells received medical advice that itself sounds like a prescription for blackouts: U.K. docs put Ashley Clarke on a steady diet of junk food, salt pills and beer. Clark, 18, suffers from Gower syndrome, a condition in which the heart slows down and the blood vessels dilate, causing a drop in blood pressure. Salty, fatty foods help raise Clarke's blood pressure, the doctors reason, and the alcohol is good for his heart. The bizarre regimen -- which Scotland's Daily Record dubbed the "Fatkins diet" -- turned Clarke's life around. "Eating junk food is probably every 18-year-old's dream," he said, "but for me it's more than that -- it's a passport to a normal life."

Hackers Delay Half-Life 2
Vivendi Universal Games and Valve Software may push back the release of the highly anticipated PC game Half-Life 2 after the recent theft and online distribution of the game's source code, according to the Reuters news service. The data theft, one of the worst to hit the video game industry, drew mixed responses from fans, some of whom pledged to help find the perpetrators, while others rushed to find screenshots or even playable fragments of the game, the news service reported.
A representative from Valve would not share details on the impact of the attack. Publisher Vivendi Universal's president of international operation, Christophe Ramboz, however, told a French newspaper that the theft "forces [them] to delay the launch of the game by at least four months." The game is now tentatively scheduled for April 2004. This is the second time the game has been pushed back from its original release date of Sept. 30.

My favorite blurb about Arnold so far....
Apparently, this is from Morning Fix in SFGate, but I think you had to be a subscriber to get it. Sorry about the size of the post, but I couldn't find a link to it.
Flags of intellectual acumen and nuanced understanding and general spiritual lightness were at half mast today as Californians banished much-loathed bland-as-oatmeal Gray Davis just 11 months into his second term and instead buried their heads in the sand and decided it's better to trash their state completely than let it be run by whimpering jerks, and elected mediocre action hero and rather embarrassing actor and noted sexist grope-aholic inarticulate completely inexperienced GOP lackey Arnold Schwarzenegger to replace him -- a Hollywood ending to one of the most extraordinary political melodramas in the nation's history, as well as one of the most adorably nauseating circus freakshows of all time, though the pit-of-the-stomach nausea is but a hint of the pain wrought when BushCo bought the election and drove a monosyllabic icepick into the heart of the nation. Voters traded a career Democratic politician who became one of the state's most despised chief executives for a moderate Republican megastar who had never before run for office and who is pretty much completely unqualified in every possible way to run the most powerful state in the nation and the fifth largest economy in the world and whose happily narcotized wife looks like something a drunken plastic surgeon practiced on with Play-Doh and squirrel parts.
Re: That's it, If Arnold wins ...
Meetings......... all day......... may not get through this..........

Here's my assessment: I hate shrub, I hate the governor of Ca. Both of them have or will do things that will far outlast how long they are in office. The bay area is nice, but so is Italy, New Zealand, etc... My job is well-paying but taxing on the soul. My family is insane. My house is too expensive. My friends are pretty cool. They are also mobile.
I am going to retreat to my secret laboritory to plot. I will get back to you when I have something concrete. If you want to plot too, or just tinker with cool science toys, the sensor has been set to read all of your voice codes and retinal patterns.
Re: That's it, If Arnold wins ...
Summary of a conversation with Chris Paduan:
This is f#cked up. I can get this kind of bullsh!t elsewhere for a third of the price. Why am I paying a premium to live somewhere this f#cked up? Why should I continue to support (through taxes and patronage) someplace that I detest?
The Bay Area has great weather (like a vacation spot) but does that really matter if you're working all the time? Apple has a cool reputation, but really it's like working for any other large company. It's cool to live within 4 hours of The Pacific, Yosemite, San Francisco, Monterrey/Carmel, etc. but I've got to question the cost.
Esther, Noelle, I'm ready to go when you are ... but, England?

Porno queen, smut king, ex-child star used different strokes -- but result was the same
Nearly every montage of recall candidates Tuesday included frames of California's unholy trinity: the porno queen (Mary Carey), the pornographer (Hustler magazine Publisher Larry Flynt) and the former child star (Gary Coleman.) [

I am so bad at being here....
I suck at being here. I haven't gotten anything done in like 2 days, I have been goofing off, but not even efficiently.
All I want to do is go home, learn photoshop and Illustrator really well, play with Audition until I get that completley, take some classes, maybe cook more often, do rad things for the pumpkin party, play all of my video games, you know... not be here.
I actually kind of feel panicked.
In a lot of ways I want October to be over as I have a lot to do this month (more on that in a moment), but then again, I LOVE October and I want it to last forever.
**sigh**
Ok, so the bad news, ok, well, more bad news, is that Satan and the grand-Satans are coming for a visit next weekend. My entire worth, and possibly my inheritance, will be evaluated based on the cleanliness of my house and the togetherness of any man-related questions they ask. I have no time or energy for either of those.
I just want to play with my computer.

Scientist Cuts the Perfect Cheese Sandwich
LONDON (Reuters) - A British scientist has calculated the optimum thickness for a slice of cheese to make the perfect cheese sandwich, according to a study published on Monday.
In a bite-sized sandwich using pre-sliced white bread lightly buttered with margarine, a slice of cheddar needs to be at least 2.8 mm thick, the study found.
Dr Len Fisher from Bristol University was commissioned by the British Cheese Board to work out how to maximize the "cheesy" aroma in a sandwich.
"After a certain thickness, no increased amount of cheese will increase the 'cheesy aroma' impact of the sandwich," said Fisher.
Tests done on the contribution of tomato and pickle found that tomatoes boosted the cheesiness flavor whereas pickles did not.
Men Get Own Kindergarten While Women Shop
BERLIN (Reuters) - German women fed up with their partners' grumbling on weekend shopping trips can now dump them at a special kindergarten for men offering beer and entertainment.
"The women are issued a receipt for their partners when they hand them in and can pick them up again when they return it to us later," Alexander Stein, manager of the 'Nox Bar' in the northern city of Hamburg told Reuters on Tuesday.
The men are given a name badge on arrival and for 10 euros ($11.80) they get two beers, a hot meal, televised football and games.
Stein said the idea for the Saturday afternoon men's creche, or "Maennergarten," came from a female customer who thought it would be a good way of getting shot of her husband so she could shop in peace.
"She found it all too stressful and thought this might be the solution. Both were very happy with the way it turned out.
"Last week the men had a remote control car to play with. Next week there's going to be a mini racetrack," said Stein.
They are also offering a drilling workshop.
"It beats sitting around in shoe shops, that's for sure," one man told the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.
So, I don't understand why they don't just leave their husbands at home?

I think Esther wants us to vote against Schwarzenegger, but I'm not really sure :-)
Seven Reasons to Vote
1. Your vote matters. If you don't vote, Schwarzenegger becomes your governor. It's that simple. A poll conducted Wednesday through Saturday showed support for the recall and Schwarzenegger dropping fast. This election could be decided by a very small number of votes. We can win this, but your vote is absolutely necessary. (The Mercury News)
2. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a Pete Wilson sequel. Governor Pete Wilson grew state spending much faster than Gray Davis ever has. Worse, he championed energy deregulation and in 1996 signed the bill that deregulated energy in California. Wilson opened the gates to let his energy pals rob the state blind. And now he and his former team are running Schwarzenegger's campaign and choosing his policies. Even more troubling: Schwarzenegger seems to be in bed with the same energy interests as Wilson (See #7). We want to see Terminator 4, not Wilson 2. (Horowitz, Conason)
3. We have no idea what Schwarzenegger is going to do with California, and neither does he. He doesn't have a plan to balance the budget. He hasn't said what cuts he'll make or what taxes he'll raise. California needs a real leader, not someone who plays one in the movies. You may be frustrated with the way things are now -- but if Schwarzenegger had a plan to make them better, don't you think he would have told us about it?
4. He lied about taking money from special interests. The night he announced his candidacy on the Jay Leno show he told us, "As you know, I don't need to take money from anyone. I have plenty of money myself." He then turned right around and accepted over $10 million not from "special" interests, but rather, as he explained it, "business and individuals, absolutely. They're powerful interests who control things." (Saramento Bee, CNN)
5. Arnold Schwarzenegger might belong on the sex offender registry, but not in the governor's mansion. So far 15 credible women have come forward with stories of being physically assaulted by this man -- some only a few years ago. He has not denied some of the stories (in fact, he said "where there's smoke, there's fire"). He has tried to chalk his mistakes up to "rowdiness." But these incidents constitute a string of crimes that would land anyone except a multi-millionaire actor in jail and on the sex offender registry. (Los Angeles Times, Newsday)
6. The Nazi stuff is serious. Who cares how long ago it was that Arnold Schwarzenegger said that he wanted to have an experience "like Hitler in the Nuremberg stadium, and have all those people scream at you and just being in total agreement with whatever you say." That's scary! And now nuns are being roughed up at Schwarzenegger rallies. A film maker who worked closely with Schwarzenegger in the '70s says he saw him playing "Nazi marching songs from long-playing records in his collection at home." At his 1988 wedding Schwarzenegger toasted a confirmed Nazi war criminal, Kurt Waldheim, saying "My friends don't want me to mention Kurt's name, because of all the recent Nazi stuff and the U.N. controversy, but I love him and Maria does too, and so thank you, Kurt." Where there's smoke, there's fire! (New York Times, Slate, Sacramento Bee, Los Angeles Times)
7. Because Schwarzenegger STILL hasn't explained why he met with Enron's Kenneth Lay at the height of the energy crisis. Schwarzenegger attended a meeting of top business leaders and Republican politicians on May 17, 2001 that was apparently held to thwart a Davis-Bustamante plan to recover $9 billion from energy companies. He still hasn't explained why he was there or whether his candidacy for Governor was discussed at that meeting. And he's refusing to talk to reporters in these last days of the campaign. (San Mateo Times, FTCR)
With Malice Toward Nuns, Arnold's Army Marches On (LA Times)
Steve Lopez
Arnold's Army came to Arcadia Friday morning, and the scene was like nothing I can remember in recent political history.
As I tried to park, and realized that one lot after another was jammed, the teeming masses streamed by me on foot, marching, marching, marching, trance-like, as if to a revival.
Old folks, young folks, moms and dads pushing strollers. Arnold Schwarzenegger, great terminator of evildoers, was coming to the Los Angeles Arboretum to vanquish sorrow, discomfort and the car tax.
A plane circled overhead, dragging a sign:
"Hasta La Vista, Davis."
Upon entering, I noticed a striking blond woman in tan leather chaps and cowboy hat. She was a Coldwell Banker real estate agent, and, of course, an actress.
"I was the lead bad girl in 'Octopussy,' " said Kristina Wayborn, who held a poodle named Honey Bear.
Honey Bear wore a red, white and blue kerchief.
Why Arnold? I asked Wayborn.
Fresh ideas, she said.
Name one, I said.
Yanking driver's licenses out of the hands of illegals, she said, going on to add that she'd like to see a conservative change, and Arnold's just the man.
Wayborn said she's known Arnold for 20 years, and was never groped by him. "And I had a certain gropability factor in those days," she said. I told her she still did, catching a bit of the Arnold spirit.
The actress Tia Carrere ("Wayne's World") also came to Arnold's defense in the wake of a Thursday L.A. Times story in which six women say they were groped and humiliated by Arnold between 1970 and 2000.
"I had a kissing scene with him," said Carrere, "and he was never anything but a gentleman."
At times, I pinch myself these days. Am I watching a gubernatorial campaign, or dreaming about an episode of "The Love Boat"?
A man carried a sign imploring people to cancel their subscription to The Times, and the talk radio hosts who introduced Carrere also bashed us.
The truth is available only on AM talk radio these days, and I think a couple of recruits in Arnold's Army did what they had to do. They spotted protest signs in the crowd and goose-stepped over to take care of business.
Not that they could have known, but the signs were carried by two Catholic nuns in their 60s. According to the nuns, their attackers snatched them away.
The silencing of dissent, coming just a day after Arnold denied reports that he once said he admired Hitler, had the nuns trembling.
"A sign was ripped from my hands," said Jo'Ann DeQuattro, a Holy Name sister whose sign said, "Groping Equals Sexual Harassment."
"I was assaulted physically," said Sister Jo'Ann.
She and Sister France White, of the Holy Child order, were headed for the exits when I saw them. Sister France had taped a sign to herself that said "Grope Free Zone." Sister Jo'Ann had her arm around Sister France to protect her.
Sister France said she gave a "groping" protest sign to a man who held a "Recall Arnold" sign, and watched as he was set upon and had the sign ripped away from him.
"People began fighting with him, and he was escorted out," said Sister France.
As for her own sign getting swiped, Sister France said:
"I believe a woman standing behind me grabbed it. A whole group of people were around us saying, 'Go home' and things like 'Get a life.' "
Sister France still had the "Grope Free Zone" sign taped to her when they decided to leave the rally, so Sister Jo'Ann suggested an exit strategy.
"She was afraid there was going to be more of it, so she said, 'We've gotta get out of here,' and walked behind me, real close behind, so Schwarzenegger followers wouldn't be hitting me as we left."
I'm happy to report that the nuns made it home safely to Pasadena.
I'd also like to report that Arnold of Arcadia delivered another brief yet flawless performance — cathartic, perfectly scripted, spiritually liberating
And content-free.

Excessive Texting May Be Sign of Addiction?
LONDON (Reuters) - Too much text messaging? You may need professional help.
More and more people are succumbing to so called "technology addictions," spending hours tapping on mobile phones or surfing the Internet, one of Britain's best known psychiatric clinics said Saturday.
"There has been a huge rise in behavioral addictions," including excessive texting, said a spokeswoman for the Priory Clinic which treats 6,000 patients a year for a range of addictions including gambling, eating disorders and drugs.
In the Sunday Telegraph newspaper the head of the clinic's addictions unit said some patients were spending up to seven hours a day text messaging.
"We have a situation where some people look down on alcoholics and cocaine addicts, but then go and spend five hours in an Internet chat room," Dr Mark Collins told the paper.
