This almost made me cry
From my Co-Worker, Dan
Word Noelle,

I can’t make it to your lunch but let it be known it has been great working with you.

You not only have been fun, realistic, candid, funny … you also do your job very well. I’m sure you know it’s a huge loss for Shak-Town. It will probably take 709 people and a chimp to replace you (for the fun aspect …you know). The thing I’ll miss most is hearing you tell the higher powers that be how it really is. Hilarious. You’d be great to have around even if you weren’t good at your job—that’s just been some good gravy.

Rock on. Peace out. You’re great.

-Dan

I'll miss my peeps here at Shak-town

RE: Million Dollar Bathtub Stolen
That's unlikely. What could Chris possibly do with a bathtub?

Million Dollar Bathtub Stolen
$1M Gold Bathtub Stolen from Hotel in Japan

I think it was Chris.

Let's look at the facts:
1) He's been talking about wanting a solid gold toilet for as long as I've known him.
2) He now has a passport.
3) He has plenty of time to pull off a caper like this, because he doesn't sleep at night, and he rarely bothers going to work.
4) This is the logical conclusion to all of that work that his new girlfriend has been making him to do his house.

and now back to my regularly scheduled programming

Re: Through a Rapist's Eyes (No Joke)
Someone posted an email like the one Noelle just quoted below on a mailing list I'm on. It has some good points, but was quickly followed up by the next two links, which are worth a read.

Link 1

Link 2

Through a Rapist's Eyes (No Joke)
A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interviewed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:

1) The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. < /B>They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun, braid or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed . They are al so likely to go after a woman with long hair . Women with short hair are not common targets.

2) The second thing < U> men look for is clothing . They will look for women who's clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around specifically to cut clothing.

3) They also look for women on their cell phone , searching through their purse, or doing other activities while walking because they are off-guard and can be easily overpowered.

4) Men are most likely to attack & rape in the early morning, between 5: 00a.m. and 8:30a.m.

5) The number one place women are abducted from/attacked is grocery store parking lots . Number two: is office parking lots/garages. Number three: is public restrooms.

6) The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to another location where they don't have to worry about getting caught.

7) Only 2% said they carried weapons because rape carries a 3-5 year sentence but rape with a weapon is 15-20 years.

8) If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn't worth it because it will be time-consuming.

9) These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas, or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.

Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you're not worth it.

10) Several defense mechanisms he taught us are: If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question , like what time is it, or make general small talk: "I can't believe it is so cold out here," "we're in for a bad winter." Now you've seen their face and could identify them in a line-up; you lose appeal as a target.

11) If someone is coming toward you , hold out your hands in front of you and yell STOP or STAY BACK ! Most of the rapists this man talked to said they'd leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back .
Again, they are looking for an EASY ta rget.

12) If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes) , yell I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent.

13) If someone grabs you , you can't beat them with strength but you can by outsmarting them If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm (between the elbow and armpit) OR in the upper inner thigh VERY VERY HARD . One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands - the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it - it hurts.

14) After the initial hit, always GO for the GROIN . I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guy's parts it is extremely painful. You might think that you'll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble and he's out of there.

15) When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible . The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.

16) Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behavior, don't dismiss it, go with your instincts!!!

You may feel a little silly at the time, but you'd feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: T he elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!

2 Learned this from a tourist guide in New Orleans . If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM . Toss it away from you....chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3 If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

4Women have a tende ncy to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc.) DON'T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.

a. If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.

5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot or parking garage:

A) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in th e back seat.

B) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.

C) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.

IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

6 ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!)

7 If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times. And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, preferably in a zigzag pattern!

8 As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP! It may get you raped or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well-educated man, w ho ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

9 Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her "Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door."

The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, "We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it , but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night.

My new... er.. and old... boss
Drunk. Falling out of a hammock... when he decided to do what I just did... which is quit my job at Shaklee and go work for Virgin America.

My story, sadly, is not nearly as entertaining. Anyway, my first day working for Alex (again) is the 11th.

The Top Reasons to Go to Work Naked
* Your boss is always yelling "I wanna see your ass in here by 8:00!"

* Can take advantage of computer monitor radiation to work on your tan.

* Inventive way to finally meet that hottie in Human Resources.

* "I'd love to chip in, but I left my wallet in my pants."

* To stop those creepy guys in Marketing from looking down your blouse.

* You want to see if it's like the dream.

* So that -- with a little help from Muzak -- you can add
"Exotic Dancer" to your exaggerated resume.

* Splattering grease from deep fryer is really hard to get out of your uniform.

* People stop stealing your pens after they've seen where you keep them.

* Diverts attention from the fact that you also came to work stoned.

What a Coincidence!
A chicken farmer went to a local bar, sat next to a woman, and ordered a glass of champagne.

The woman perks up and says, "How about that? I just ordered a glass of champagne, too!

"What a coincidence," he said, "This is a special day for me. I'm celebrating."

"This is a special day for me, too, and I'm also celebrating!" says the woman.

"What a coincidence," says the man.

As they clinked glasses he asked, "What are you celebrating?"

"My husband and I have been trying to have a child, and today my gynecologist told me I'm pregnant!"

"What a coincidence," says the man. "I'm a chicken farmer. For years all my hens were infertile, but today they're finally laying fertilized eggs."

"That's great!" says the woman, "How did your chickens become fertile?"

"I switched cocks," he said.

She smiled and said, "What a coincidence!"

Africa Calling
My blog has come out of dormancy. Along with our faith community, it has taken an unexpected turn towards Africa. The problems are huge; ironically, that makes it easier to bury our heads in the sand. But what if you could make a meaningful impact -- not on a continent (too big), not on a country (too big), but more on the scale of a county? Stay tuned

Cool Images With A Message
Check out the cool images on Chris Jordan's site.

I thought both "Running the Numbers", a series of computer-generated images, and "Intolerable Beauty", a series of actual photographs, were really interesting.

Repost from a mass email I sent earlier today:
Dear Friends and Family,

In the interest of not wanting to repeat this story a million times, I am mass emailing all of you so I don't have to keep talking about this. Sorry about the format, it's just kind of catastrophic news.

Chris and I were in St. Martin (Caribbean) until Saturday (May 5). On Wednesday night I got a call from my mom that there had been a fire in my apartment on the Sunday before. Apparently, I left the vacuum cleaner plugged in and one of the cats had stepped on the "on" switch. It ran for 12 hours and then caught fire. My downstairs neighbor heard it running, thought it was strange but did not do anything. She even heard the fire alarm go off, but still nothing. The fire was small, but very hot, and burned itself out before flashing and catching the whole building on fire.

Here is the very bad news of it all:
My cats did not make it through the ordeal. Onyx, Julius, and Soliel passed away of smoke asphyxiation that evening.

Yesterday, I went to the apartment, and it is worse than I could have imagined. Everything is black. I mean EVERYTHING. It's dark in there and kind of hard to see. Most of my things are covered in soot, and a large portion of them are unsalvageable. It's on the walls and the ceiling in a thick black coat, it's in the cabinets, in every room and closet, and in all of the electronics. The apartment is completely uninhabitable, and causes breathing issues if you are in there too long.

My friends are wonderful people. They came to my house on Saturday, when I was gone, and cleaned. They took all of my clothes to a laundry mat to wash them and try and get the smell out. They started packing up my things so I could begin a move in with Chris. Friends that I haven't even seen in many months showed up to help with the task. Yesterday, even more came with me to do more work. You can't be in there too long before you start having breathing problems so I think I will be doing this in short bursts, although I think a huge chunk will happen Saturday when a herd of people are going to come over and help me get a huge portion of my things out.

I have heard reports of my co-workers calling around to get information, and passing this message on to other people I know. They have been more than supportive and I am blessed to work with such good people. There was no question that I should take whatever time I needed to get through this and they would hold down the fort. It's good to have one less thing to think about.

While this event is rather catastrophic, and I think it's going to take a long time for me to be ok from this one, I come out of it with a feeling of being so unbelievably supported and loved by the people around me. This has made things so much easier to deal with. Going into my apartment for the first time would have been so much worse if I hadn't had 5 friends right behind me to make it better and get me out of there if I needed it. Thank you to everyone who helped, passed on their thoughts and support, and everyone for being so kind and lending your strength. It really does make a huge difference. Amber and Carl deserve a huge shout out for being ring leaders in organization and dealing with the transport and care of my babies.

A lot have you have asked what you can do to help. While I can probably use boxes, and some help packing up some things, the most important thing I can ask you to do is if you hear something, go check on it. If no one is home, call someone. You may be saving a life. If my neighbor had gotten up at probably any point for about 11 hours and just knocked, and then told the manager, my babies might be alive.

If anyone has moving type boxes that they are willing to donate to the cause, I can use medium ones (huge ones are probably overkill at this point). Saturday we'll be doing a cleaning and packing fiesta, if anyone wants to grab a mask and gloves and come on over. If you are willing to take a car load of stuff down to San Jose, we can probably use the space. I am not sure what time people are planning as of now, but I can let you know if you are interested. I'd like to try and get this over with as quickly as possible...

Today, I will head up to say goodbye to my babies one last time before they get cremated. I am probably going to be out of work most, if not all of this week, while I meet with people about the different things that need to get taken care of.

Ok, I think that covers everything that I know so far. Thanks again to everyone for being so wonderful. Calls, emails and text messages are helping a lot.

And just so everyone knows: I am ok. I have had a bunch of days on a beautiful island to process it all, and every day makes me a little less weepy. My stuff is just stuff. It sucks that so much of it is going in the trash, rather than being donated to some good cause, or kept for further use, but it is just stuff. My kitties are the real loss, but they lead a good life, and knew they were loved.

Go home and love your pets, you'll never regret it.

Love to you all,
Noelle
