After my very yummy lunch with the Adobe boys, I came home and discovered a very hecitc day ahead of me. Between organizing eBay stuff and packaging a basket full of stuff, organizing stuff for my employement people meeting tomorrow, figuring out lunches this week, cleaning up the disaster that is my house, organizing Christmas stuff, and getting a gig on Weds to earn extra cash, I haven't had a moments rest. I don't think I was this busy even when I had a job...

Man Robs Hotel, Gets Drunk, Gets Caught
HELSINKI (Reuters) - A 32 year-old man robbed a hotel in the western Finnish town of Turku, got drunk, passed out in a taxi and was picked up by police, tabloid Ilta-Sanomat reported on Saturday.

The man went to the hotel in the early hours of Friday, threatened the receptionist with a weapon, took money from the till and demanded bottles of drink, the paper said.

The receptionist was taken to a cashpoint to withdraw money and then forced into a taxi. The thief then drank to the point where he passed out. The taxi driver then alerted police.

Subject: Illegal Immigrants
This arrived in my inbox, and I thought I would share it. It does seem rather long, and yet, just long enough to be validated by the need to waste time on your Monday back after 4 days off. The one perk to being unemployed: No Monday back for me.

Illegal immigrants in Canada

Tuesday, November 16, 2004

The flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration.

The reelection of President Bush is prompting the exodus among left leaning citizens who fear they'll soon be required to hunt, pray and agree with Bill O'Reilly. Canadian border farmers say it's not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, animal rights activists and Unitarians crossing their fields at night.

''I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood producer huddled in the barn," said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, whose acreage borders North Dakota. The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. ''He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken. When I said I didn't have any, he left. Didn't even get a chance to show him my screenplay, eh?"

In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher fences, but the liberals scaled them. So he tried installing speakers that blare Rush Limbaugh across the fields. ''Not real effective," he said. ''The liberals still got through, and Rush annoyed the cows so much they wouldn't give milk."

Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet liberals near the Canadian border, pack them into Volvo station wagons, drive them across the border and leave them to fend for themselves. ''A lot of these people are not prepared for rugged conditions," an Ontario border patrolman said. ''I found one carload without a drop of drinking water. They did have a nice little Napa Valley cabernet,
though."

When liberals are caught, they're sent back across the border, often wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives. Rumors have been circulating about the Bush administration establishing reeducation camps in which liberals will be forced to drink domestic beer and watch NASCAR.

In the days since the election, liberals have turned to sometimes ingenious ways of crossing the border. Some have taken to posing as senior citizens on bus trips to buy cheap Canadian prescription drugs. After catching a half-dozen young vegans disguised in powdered wigs, Canadian immigration authorities began stopping buses and quizzing the supposed senior-citizen passengers. ''If they can't identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk Show, we get suspicious about their age," an official said.

Canadian citizens have complained that the illegal immigrants are creating an organic-broccoli shortage and renting all the good Susan Sarandon movies. ''I feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy just can't support them," an Ottawa resident said. ''How many art-history majors does one country need?"

In an effort to ease tensions between the United States and Canada, Vice President Dick Cheney met with the Canadian ambassador and pledged that the administration would take steps to reassure liberals, a source close to Cheney said. ''We're going to have some Peter, Paul & Mary concerts. And we might put some endangered species on postage stamps. The president is determined to reach out."

Re: Metallica
Was actually not nearly as bad as I have seen them be, aside from rushing through the whole show, it was pretty ok. Godsmack was actually decent too, and the surprised me with the third best drum solo that I have seen. They had two drumsets that rotated and the lead singer is actually a better drummer than anything else.

Both bands had a hug square stage in the center of HP Pavilion so seating was not favored to one end at all. The entire stage rotated so everyone got to have them play to them at some point. Very cool. I like creative stage handling!

Went to SFMOMA - I loved the building and saw some very cool art and some very not art art... very fun over all. We walked around for a while and then ended back at Original Joe's. I very highly recommend the veal picatta - YUM!

Hope you all are having a wonderful weekend! Tomorrow night is Metallica for me - oh joy.

Dark Shadows
BTW, I am on Series 5 of Dark Shadows now. It's a 1960's Soap Opera with vampires, witches, and ghosts. Some of it is in black and white and some is in color, and it's really, surprisingly, captivating. What makes it really great is that it really is a soap. The content is obviously really fun, but they totally treat it very seriously and go out of their way to not let it be anything but a drama. Very fun, if you ever have the time.

Thanks to C & N for loaning me the DVDs and for introducing me!

Free Martha on your tree
So, somehow, I found myself at a Save Martha Store and was intrigued to find that you can make your plee via your Christmas tree this year with a Save Martha Oval Ornament.

OK, look, 1) It's only 5 months, she's been in there one already. 2) They aren't going to let her out, it's an example thing. 3) She Volunteered to go - send her a postcard telling her you think she's swell, but this whole deal with trying to get her freed is a waste of time and/or a moneymaking opportunity, and that's just sad (plus, she'd be appalled at those color combinations). 4) T-shirts, bumperstickers, etc, get the word out. Having an ornament on your tree does nothing except entertain your cat.

The Bachelor *Warning: this one hit me pretty hard*
Wow. I have been sucked into an awful voyeuristic situation. The last Bachelor was on tonight where the guy picked his woman. While he did pick the girl that I thought he should, I found myself just totally disgusted by the whole show, and, at the same time, I couldn't stop watching. In case you don't know, the guy has to eliminate women each day until he gets to three and then two and then he has to pick and propose.

I am happy that the two seem so in love with each other, but I know that at least the last 3 girls that were eliminated were absolutely devastated. I was crying for them. He was really good at treating them all the same, so they all were falling so in love with him. The last one booted was the hardest to watch. She had met his family and friends and he had met hers so it wasn't just them, it was an entire group of people that were having their hearts broken.

So I started thinking how this is an awesome show from a marketing perspective because it gets people so sucked in, but it so unbelievably awful from a moral point of view.

It's pre-meditated love murder.

This guy, for whatever reason, agreed to come on this show, knowing he would have to do this. These women came on the show knowing it would be done. They agreed to have their relationships taped for America to see while little love snipers came and fired bullets into their souls. I wish I was exaggerating - you should see how these women react when they aren't picked to move forward. You can see it in their eyes. It's horrible.

Having been in a situation where I was "one of" instead of "the one", I know how they felt. I know what it is like to be so madly in love, and believe that the other person feels the same, and yet know that you aren't the only one and could be eliminated at any time. I chose to not be "one of", not in case things didn't work out, but simply because I refuse to be in that position. These people chose to do it all, get the decisions, and have their hearts crushed for the world to see. I know first hand that that person stays in your head for a very long time, and it's one of the hardest and longest situations to try and get over, if you ever can.

It's awful. It's the television people, it's the people who go on the show, and it's people like me, who watch. I feel bad for helping to propagate this horrible show of inhumanity... I'm sorry America, for making you a more dispicable place tonight. I will try harder in the future.

Happy Birthday to me!
I am happy to announce that ABC has decided to celebrate the day of my birth with a 2 hour Alias. That just rules. People, whatever you are planning, January 5, 2005 from 8-10 pm will be spent on my couch. If you are silent, you can join me. All other celebrations will have to be at some other point in time.

I think they need to re-evaluate their targeted marketing.

"The gnomes display naked body parts -- the same ones you'd expect to see in a human peep show," Ullrich said of his missing stars.

The adults-only attraction at Dwarf-Park Trusetal, where visitors peep through keyholes to see the saucy German miniatures in compromising poses, was smashed open early on Thursday morning.

Ullrich said he feared the gnomes would not be traced.

"I doubt they're standing in someone's garden, they'll have to have been hidden inside."

The correlation between the red and the Blue and IQ. What bothers me about this is that it reports (probably inaccuratley) that Connecticut has the highest average IQ and it is only 113. This is a sad, sad world we live in if the *best* avg. IQ we can do is 113....

Re: Anybody know if AT&T gets phone reception at Mono Lake?
I would expect that they would have cell reception at Mono (Lee Vining in particular), but I don't know for sure. I do know that there is coverage in and around Mammoth Lakes, which is about 25 miles to the south. My recollection was there was coverage on 395 at the Mammoth Lakes exit. I think there was coverage in ML too, but I don't remember. I think coverage on 395 near civilized areas is likely.

Bridget Jones 2
Somehow I got wrangled into an all-girl Bridget Jones inspired night to celebrate the premier of the second movie. Despite the fact that I had not yet seen the first (I come home to find it in my mailbox in a lovely green package from my new lover, Netflix), it was a pretty good movie. Feel good and funny and just what you need if you just want to enjoy something silly.

Lyndsay, Catherine, Rami, Tasha and I ate Turkey curry, drank chardonnay, and had a wonderful chocolate desert that rivaled Morton's godiva cake and then went to see the flick. All in all a good evening.

Favorite line from the movie:

"Except Hitler."

OK, here's a question for all you iTunes users
I have my directory Structure for my music as such:
Folder [artist name] > Folder [album Name] > Songs [track number - Songtitle.mp3]

Yeah, iTunes imports them all as just the [track number - Songtitle.mp3] even though I selected the whole mp3 folder and that sucks. It no won't tell me the artist, or the album, even though it seems to know all that info from downloaded songs (not iTunes downloaded, just collected over the years). I don't understand why it has all the answers for the songs I pirated, but nothing for legitimatley owned CDs...

Anybody have a clue how I can get it to read my directory structure so whenever I do get my coveted toy, I can properly import said files into the machine? If the answer is that I have to re-rip them all using iTunes, then I retract my "Macs don't suck" comment from before.

The Mac did not bite me, but it did kick my ass all over the chess board
So I had my play date with the PowerBook (not iBook, I was corrected). It was fairly cool although some things it did, even Wendy could not explain. However, I did learn to navigate around and played with some of it's internal toys, like iMovie and stuff, and it seems like it won't hurt me (although the cost of switching all of my software certainly would).

I guess my issue with them still lies in their lack of capability to be upgraded piecemeal, but at least I know my way around now and can appreciate transparent windows more than most people want to know about. It would be possible, if one were handed to me, that I might add it to my network and play with it fairly often, but I am not yet ready to give up my PC and the love I have of being able to drastically improve the performance of my machine for $100 (not that I have the means to actually do this right now).

Anyway, yes, I see why you all love them, and I agree that they are cool and thoughtfully created, and much prettier than PC laptops, and one could, someday be integrated into my small farm I am cultivating here.

There. I am not yet at "switch" but I will admit to "add"... someday... when I can afford the incredible price these things seem to cost.

Nice.

Came back, deposited my newly gotten unemployment check, and tried out the new do-it-yourself postal worker replacements at the post office. Quick and easy and I didn't have to deal with lame postal people asking me a million questions. If it was hazardous, would I tell you???

I also busted open iTunes, since I have some time on my hands, and learned that interface. It's now going to spend about the next day cataloging the 80 gigs of music I have ripped down from CDs...

Dear Music Gods
Dear Music Gods,
I am so sorry that I have let you down. I am so sorry that I can walk into the Warfield, hear three chords of music and be able to turn to Paduan and say "Hey, check it out, they got ACDC to open for them" and be right. (Well 1/2 way at least)

It's really not my fault you see. I have never owned an ACDC album, and wouldn't think of polluting my collection with such horrible noises, but people, especially here in the Bay area, seem to be music heathens, and love trash. It's pervasive noise, and I can't help it if my subconscious takes a minute to catalog it for further repulsion later.

I am so sorry, please forgive me. I'll go listen to some Floyd now and try and cleanse my soul.

Manson
Manson rocked, as usual, although they had the bass up way too loud.

His opening band, ACDCShe was an all femal cover band of ACDC, which made me afraid for my life. I think they forgot that ACDC sucks or something, although they did a good impression of them. Still, I felt like they were going to break into "we got the beat" at any moment because of their particular sound.

Anyway, had a lot of fun, Manson is always great in concertand worth seeing, even if you don't like his music otherwise.

November 2, 2004 Feast of All Souls
The Church has encouraged prayer for the dead from the earliest times as an act of Christian charity. "If we had no care for the dead," Augustine noted, "we would not be in the habit of praying for them." Yet pre-Christian rites for the deceased kept such a strong hold on the superstitious imagination that a liturgical commemoration was not observed until the early Middle Ages, when monastic communities began to mark an annual day of prayer for the departed members.
In the middle of the 11th century, St. Odilo, abbot of Cluny (France), decreed that all Cluniac monasteries offer special prayers and sing the Office for the Dead on November 2, the day after the feast of All Saints. The custom spread from Cluny and was finally adopted throughout the Roman Church.

The theological underpinning of the feast is the acknowledgment of human frailty. Since few people achieve perfection in this life but, rather, go to the grave still scarred with traces of sinfulness, some period of purification seems necessary before a soul comes face-to-face with God. The Council of Trent affirmed this purgatory state and insisted that the prayers of the living can speed the process of purification.

Superstition still clung to the observance. Medieval popular belief held that the souls in purgatory could appear on this day in the form of witches, toads or will-o’-the-wisps. Graveside food offerings supposedly eased the rest of the dead.

Observances of a more religious nature have survived. These include public processions or private visits to cemeteries and decorating graves with flowers and lights. This feast is observed with great fervor in Mexico.

re: Halloween
BTW, since people have been asking, Hallowen was fun! We went up to the Castro, and hung out at the street party there for a couple hours. Pics up for that probably tomorrow. Unfortunatley, the cab company that said that they were sending us a cab to take us back to Kevin's house never did, so we ended up walking a whole bunch, in the middle of the night an hour later than we wanted to to find one.

Kevin's pad is tres cool, with a view that most people would die for (I'd never be able to leave to porch if I was either of them).

Anyway, the Castro, once again, is recommended on Halloween night!

Feast of All Saints
The earliest certain observance of a feast in honor of all the saints is an early fourth-century commemoration of "all the martyrs." In the early seventh century, after successive waves of invaders plundered the catacombs, Pope Boniface IV gathered up some 28 wagonloads of bones and reinterred them beneath the Pantheon, a Roman temple dedicated to all the gods. The pope rededicated the shrine as a Christian church. According to Venerable Bede, the pope intended "that the memory of all the saints might in the future be honored in the place which had formerly been dedicated to the worship not of gods but of demons" (On the Calculation of Time).

But the rededication of the Pantheon, like the earlier commemoration of all the martyrs, occurred in May. Many Eastern Churches still honor all the saints in the spring, either during the Easter season or immediately after Pentecost.

How the Western Church came to celebrate this feast in November is a puzzle to historians. The Anglo-Saxon theologian Alcuin observed the feast on November 1 in 800, as did his friend Arno, Bishop of Salzburg. Rome finally adopted that date in the ninth century.
