I just love it when someone brings it all home...

DM, it would be nice if shrub's motives were a little more pure, but unfortunately they're not. There's just too much history with the US, the Bush family, the Bin Laden's, Hussein, Israel and the entire Middle-East. I have a degree in Poly-Sci and have closely followed Middle-Eastern politics for 15 years.
US foreign policy has always been predicated on a broad spectrum dominance policy. That translates into making sure the US is always #1 as a military prescence to enforce the will of industry, and ensure that no one ever approaches the level of being a capable, credible threat to that dominace. The exception to that of course are places like China and Russia which are just too huge to tell what to do, short of WWIII.
American media doesn't help. It's woefully remiss in what it reports to the public at large. Did you know that the CIA has been, and still is, the largest purchaser/supplier of "(dis)information" in the US. Conspiratorial as it sounds, it's sadly true and can be verified through the Library of Congress and FOIA.
Consider the new spin we see today. During the Vietnam conflict, you saw body bags and coffins comin home every night on television. This certainly helped bolster the anti-war movement, hence the reason you don't see that sort of footage today.
What you're allowed to see are carefully crafted pieces of PR like Jessica Lynch. Jingoistic banter and flag waving all carefully crafted to sell the image of America and cloud peoples vision to the reality of it all.
The very short and simple reasons this whole war of aggression is about petroleum are pretty obvious to anyone in the know.
#1) Iraq's infrastructure is in piss poor shape and needs rebuilding to the tune of 10's of billions of dollars. Who has recieved the contracts for that work without even bidding? Betchel and Kellog, Brown and Root (a Haliburton subsidiary). Haliburton is Cheny's old company and Betchel has deep ties with the GOP. So far they've been awarded 6.1 billion dollars worth of work.
#2) When the oil starts flowing in real volume, then you'll see corps like Chevron (Condy Rice's old company) and the others cleaning up. Controlling Iraqi oil effectively puts an armlock on OPEC. The US can now not only tell OPEC to fuckoff, but they can maintain the whole "terrorist" BS as leverage to justify an invasion and bust up OPEC entirely-whilst further lining the pockets of their supporters. Mark my words, if Bush gets re-elected he'll be going after Iran and Syria.
#3) Afghanistan. I won't even get into Afghanistan, but suffice it to say that was another con. The warlords are back in power and so long as they get to grow their poppies and get a cut of the profits for the pipelines now being built through their territories, the US is happily turning a blind eye. Unocal, Exxon, etc. all have pipeline construction under way which should be complete around 2005, which will pump natural gas from Turmekistan and Afghanistan into the Caspian Sea for transport. This is why Russia went into Afghanistan in the first place and Regan opposed them so hard (including the finance and training of Bin Laden).
#4) The Military Idustrial Intelligence Complex comes up smiling from all of this. Particularly the Carslyle Group which is now the world's largest military contractor headed up by all the ex-Regan (Frank Carlucci) and Bush Sr. cronies (including the Bushter himself). Since Regan, the MIIC has received about 4 trillion dollars while education and social spending has amounted to about 300 billion. Bush part 2 has seen their funding increase over 400% himself. Those guys love it. Let's face it, if there's no enemy, there's no reason to waste...er spend all that money is there?
It goes, on and on. It's a goddamned tradgedy that so many people just have zero idea about what this all about.
If you're interested in getting a better understanding of all of this, here are two books yo should buy/get from the library.

I think it's great that people want to be so optimistic about government, but they really need to make a concerted effort to question the motives of those in power if they consider themselves moral and decent people.
Bush is a real criminal plain and simple. Clinton might have been a crook and into self-aggrandizement, but he's a boy scout compared to guys like Bush and Cheny.
Then there's the economy.
Regan - deficit, recession, mass unemployment
Bush Sr. - deficit, recession, mass unemployment
Clinton - deficit eliminated, boom economy, surplus employment
Bush Jr. - largest deficit in history, recession, mass unemployment, the worst environmental record of any president, and he's still not finished.
It's not rocket science.
Now, all that considered, do you really want a GOP administration in for another 4 years-or ever-for that matter?
