Alias Cut Short?
E! Online's "Watch With Kristin" column reported that ABC has cut the order for the last season of Alias to 17 episodes from 22. Citing an unnamed show representative, the column also reported that writers are worried that the network may cut the show's order further, depending on when the show eventually returns to the schedule.

ABC still hasn't scheduled Alias, which is supposed to wrap up its last season in the spring.

According to the column, the writers have come up with a plan to bring the Alias storylines to a conclusion within the allotted remaining episodes, even if they need to end the show more quickly than expected.

Alias has resumed production following star Jennifer Garner's maternity leave. [via]

Old man and teenager
An old man was sitting on a bench at the mall. A teenager walked up to the bench and sat down. He had spiked hair in all different colours: green, red, blue, and yellow. The old man just stared.

Every time the teenager looked, the old man was staring at him. The teenager finally said sarcastically, " What's the matter old timer, never done anything wild in your life?" Without batting an eye, the old man replied, " Got drunk once and had sex with a peacock ... I was just wondering if you were my son."

Year in Games Award Show Planned
The Academy of Interactive Arts and Science and Dick Clark Productions are teaming up to produce an annual television awards show designed to showcase the year's best video games and the creative teams that made them possible.

Dick Clark Productions' vice chairman Jules Haimovitz said, "We're creating a form of video that heretofore hasn't existed... It will be entertaining even to those outside the game crowd." The show will focus more on how these titles became worthy of recognition.

Holy Crap, that's cool! of the day: Laser turntable plays records like CDs
[from BoingBoing]
The ELP laser turntable reads LPs with lasers -- the manufacturer claims that the lasers can read "virgin" parts of the grooves that haven't been touched by needles and produce a better sound, and that the five laser read-head lets you skip forward and back across or within tracks as you would with a CD.
Two Tracking Laser beams are directed to the left and to the right shoulders of the groove of the record. Only the part of the beams that reach the groove are reflected to two PSD (Position Sensitive Detector) optical semiconductors. The part of the beams that fall on the land area of the record are deflected and not picked up by the PSD devices. The signals are sent to a microprocessor via analog to digital converters, then to servos to maintain the reader head position directly above the groove.

Two additional laser beams are directed at the left groove wall and the right groove wall just below the tracking beams. Modulation on the individual grooves is reflected to scanner mirrors and onto left and right photo optical sensors. The variations of the modulated light cause the audio sensors to develop an electrical representation of the mechanical modulation of the grooves. The entire sound reproduction chain is analog.

This makes my brain quiver with anticipation. [get one]

Uneventful weekend
Well, I had a relativley unevenful weekend... Mostly I was, and still am, sick, so I ditched WonderCon in order that I might sleep and be beeter. Nothng sucks more than trying to deal with Con while sick.

Instead, I stayed home, cleaned, slept, caught up on Tivo, and went down to help Amber pick out her wedding dress (mission accomplished, BTW, and at a very awesome price!).

I am now pondering some more cleaning, and catching up on Olympic previews. Until Friday, I had no idea they were even happening so soon (shows how much I pay attention). The only reason I even figured it out is that Shaklee sponsors the Ski and Snowboarding teams and we were told that while the games are on, we can't mention anything about that on the site (Olympic Commitee wierd rulz).

Anyway, back to checking out the snowboarders. Speaking of, I'll be out all next weekend with the wife in Tahoe, getting our snowboard on. Should be a good time...

Re: Judge to Rule on Merit of Christ Case

ROME, Italy (AP) -- An Italian judge has dismissed an atheist's petition that a small-town priest should stand trial for asserting that Jesus Christ existed, both sides said on Friday. [more]

Good, that was fairly ridiculous. One can debate the spiritual questions ("Who are you?" "What do you want?" "Where are you going?"). But the historicity of his existence? Feh.

Re: What do we think of "Julius"?

What do we think of "Julius"?
er, for the cat that is. I have been informed that Neelix, aside from beinga totally geeky name, also is too close to Onyx for my poor kitties to discern.

Deanne suggested Julius to me today, which I am very fond of. It also sort of fits him, and I can call him "Jules", which I think is cool.

It's Orange, By the way, not Ceasar. And mostly because he has what appears to be a Orange Julius mustache on his face.

Well, if you love it or hate it, let your voice be heard! I need some validation here.

RE: Personality Defect Test
You are the Robot! You are characterized by your rationality. In fact, this is really ALL you are characterized by. Like a cold, heartless machine, you are so logical and unemotional that you scarcely seem human. For instance, you are very humble and don't bother thinking of your own interests, you are very gentle and lack emotion, and you are also very introverted and introspective. You may have noticed that these traits are just as applicable to your laptop as they are to a human being. In short, your personality defect is that you don't really HAVE a personality. You are one of those annoying, super-logical people that never gets upset or flustered. Unless, of course, you short circuit. Or if someone throws a pie at you. Pies sure are delicious.

To put it less negatively:

1. You are more RATIONAL than intuitive.

2. You are more INTROVERTED than extroverted.

3. You are more GENTLE than brutal.

4. You are more HUMBLE than arrogant.

Compatibility:

Your exact opposite is the Class Clown.

Other personalities you would probably get along with are the Hand-Raiser, the Emo Kid, and the Haughty Intellectual.

Groove
I see that you finally honored my groove request. The world thanks you.
That's a different version than the one I heard though.
The better version is on the Guerolito albulm:

I'm sick
Blech. I don't feel good. Nose: Runny. Head: Hurts. Throat: sore. Jaw: achey.

Sorry if I have contaminated any of you. I have day of meetings tomorrow, so maybe I cna get some sleep. I'll just put up a sign that says "Yes, we can do that. Please bring offerings to my cube for priority consideration." and nod off....

Personality Defect Test
Saw this on Kevin's Blog and gave it a go. Surprise! I am a smartass! Don't read too much into the decription: all outcomes tell you the worst of yourself. I wholeheartedly agree with it insomuch as it is my defect, and not my many wonderful advantages, although I find the people it thinks I am compatible with to be completley off the mark:

You are the Smartass!
You are rational, extroverted, brutal, and arrogant. You probably consider people who are emotional and gentle to be big pussies who are obviously in lesser stature than you. You have many flaws, despite your seeming intelligence and cool-headedness. For instance, you aren't very nice. In fact, you're probably an asshole. And you are conceited and self-centered. Not only that, but you are very loud and vocal about all this, seeing as how you are extroverted. There is no better way to describe you than as a "smartass", I'm afraid. Perhaps just "ass" would do, too. But that's a little less literary and descriptive. At any rate, your main personality defect is the fact that you are self-centered, mean, uncaring, and brutally logical.

To put it less negatively:
1. You are more RATIONAL than intuitive.
2. You are more EXTROVERTED than introverted.
3. You are more BRUTAL than gentle.
4. You are more ARROGANT than humble.

Compatibility:

Your exact opposite is the Emo Kid.
Other personalities you would probably get along with are the Capitalist Pig, the Braggart, and the Sociopath.

re: Kitty naming contest
April Just suggested Azreal, Chester, Rusty, Chilli, Tobasco, Cheeto, Tangelo, and Doozer from Fraggle Rock.

Like those.... any thoughts?

Kitty naming contest
Mercury, as a name, sucks for this cat. I have spent a whole evening with him and he is not:
1) Godlike:
Mer·cu·ry

1. Roman Mythology. A god that served as messenger to the other gods and was himself the god of commerce, travel, and thievery.

2) Plantetlike:
Mer·cu·ry

The smallest of the inner planets and the one nearest the sun, having a sidereal period of revolution about the sun of 87.97 days at a mean distance of 57.91 million kilometers (35.98 million miles) and a mean radius of approximately 2,440 kilometers (1,516 miles).

3) Metallic:
Mer·cu·ry

Symbol Hg

A silvery-white poisonous metallic element, liquid at room temperature and used in thermometers. Atomic number 80; atomic weight 200.59; melting point -38.83°C; boiling point 356.73°C; specific gravity 13.546 (at 20°C); valence 1, 2. Also called hydrargyrum.

4) A Mercurial Temperment:
mer·cu·ri·al

Quick and changeable in temperament; volatile: a mercurial nature.

So, I will take suggestions while I try and figure out what to name him. I do have an idea right now, but I don't want to sway you guys in any direction. Email them to me, or, preferrably, post them up here so people can see what you have suggested.

Carl: I am not naming him Witchy or Orangy or even Tigger. Don't even suggest it.

Anderson Talks X-FILES Movie
Gillian Anderson, who currently lives in London, recently talked with Newsday about her career and another X-FILES film.

In regards to sequel, Anderson said, "Eventually there will be, we hope there is going to be."

She also noted, "The longer we wait, the less people are going to give a --. It was supposed to be shot this year, and there are contract issues. We're basically ready to go."

Anderson went on to add, "We're not even going to be able to shoot it until next September at the very earliest. By the time it comes out it's going to be 2007." [via]

Rodriguez & Tarantino Will GRIND It Out
The Weinstein Co., Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez are gearing up for the film GRIND.

Tarantino and Rodriguez will each direct a 60-minute horror story. Rodriguez will shoot his in Austin, Texas. His story is called PLANET TERROR -- it's a zombie movie. Tarantino will direct DEATH PROOF, a slasher tale.

In addition, there will be faux trailers and ads that run during the intermission between the two parts. Some of the possibilities include a blaxploitation pic and a kung-fu movie.

The entire project will be shot in the tradition of the '70s exploitation films that influenced both directors.

Happy Groundhog Day
This makes me think of the movie. That makes me think of people I love. That makes me happy.

Originally uploaded by Lbc42.

Shortly after my last post, I went off to find Piper and make sure she hadn't gotten out. I found her behind the couch in her favorite place, but she wasn't alive anymore. I became obviously hysterical and called Carl, who came immediatley up here, and then Amber, who also came. Amber has taken her away to get creamated and carl is here with me for the night.

We don't know what happened. She was only 5 or so, but she was always an odd looking cat. She was found in her spot, and looked relaxed, although her eyes were open. Amber believes that it happened suddenly. We are going to see if her shelter can do a post mortem on her to see if they can tell what happened, but if not, we will just have her creamated and spread her ashes somewhere pretty.

Piper was a very sweet cat. She was small and skittish, and had a purr like a lion's roar. In the last few months, after she had been fixed, we have seen the best of her. She has come out at parties, socialized more, and she and I would have frequent conversations when she was not trying to constantly get in my lap. I will miss her so very much... I was so happy that she was coming around. I am glad tha that's how she went out.

I love you little Pea Ha'ad. I will miss you....

This is the last picture of her, taken 2 weeks ago at my Birthday Party, where she came out despite the fact taht there were 15 people in the room. She even looks kinda happy.
