When asked today about Amnesty International's report criticizing America's treatment of detainees, President Bush called the claims "absurd" and said:

Done with Sandman Main Set of Comics
And they come highly recommended. All the "WTF?" and "uh, oh-kay then" that happens in most of the earliest ones comes very rapidly together in the 9th book. Most of the random is resolved. Good stuff.
There's a bunch of one offs that I have that I will read soon - notably the Death comics. (Morpheus' sister is Death, for those of you who don't know.)
However, in a rather old school style this weekend, I grabbed my copy of the Davinci Code and am 2/3 of the way through it. It is a very captivating and easy read.

Batteryless and wireless mouse
 | The A4Tech battery-free wireless optical mouse is powered by nothing else than RFID. It is in fact powered by the NB-50 mouse pad which has a cord and connects to the computer via USB. A large fake penis has caused a major terror alert in America.
A key highway though Florida was closed after a driver spotted what looked like a pipe bomb under an overpass.
Fearing terrorists were trying to blow up the structure, police closed Interstate 75 for an hour.
But on closer inspection police found that the 'device' was actually a foot-long plastic penis.
"Someone took construction-grade plastic, moulded it into a penis and wrapped it with duct tape," said Lee County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Charles Ferrante.
The bomb squad was brought in to handle the situation and a remote-controlled robot used to make the fake penis safe.

Researchers hope artifacts identify pirate's ship: Wreckage thought to be pirate Blackbeard's flagship
OFF THE COAST OF ATLANTIC BEACH, North Carolina (AP) -- Researchers Tuesday raised another cannon from an underwater site two miles offshore, and hope it will help prove the sunken wreckage was once the flagship of the notorious pirate Blackbeard.
"We knew it the first day and we still have absolutely no doubt that she's the Queen Anne's Revenge," said Phil Masters, whose Florida-based research firm located the wreckage in 1996. "There is no other ship lost at Beaufort Inlet with anything more than 10 cannon, nor more than 110 tons that we know of." [

Holy Crap! Alias season Finale was kick ass!
(not any real spoilers, so you are safe)So I sat here and watched the Lost Finale.
Eh. It was good. More stuff opened up. Dude got very realistically blown up by dinamite on screen. Cliffhanger ending. The usual.
Good enough so I watch next season (or on DVD).
Then came Alias.
Pretty standard. The usual season ending stuff. Love the show, but it's getting kind of routine.
But the last 20 seconds made my jaw drop. Seriously, that was one of the best cliffhangers I have ever seen (and I HATE cliffhangers). I couldn't believe the ended with that. All sorts of "PLEASE get me more ALIAS now!!! I have to know!!"
Good thing that, so far, they aren't planning on waiting until January again to show the next season - although with Jennifer on rout to bith Ben Affleck's kid in the fall, I wouldn't be surprised if they did.
Damn. That was awesome. Just thought I'd share.
More Star Wars? Who could have possibly guessed that???
Another scooper, MK, wrote in with his story of meeting none other than George Lucas, while in Hawaii on his (MK’s) honeymoon. MK had this to say about his chance encounter with the Master:
I was vacationing at the Mandarin Oriental in Hawaii for my honeymoon in 2004. I ran into George Lucas and his family on the beach there. I was sitting in a hammock, just about to get up, and he asked me if I was done. I said yes and began to leave....
He said so "Where are you from" ... I said I was from NY. He said "Are you here for the shoot?" I said no, “Here on my honeymoon.”
I told him I was a big STAR WARS fan and was anxiously awaiting the conclusion of the most recent trilogy.
I asked him if STAR WARS was going to end with this next installment and.
He said, "'Star Wars' will never end. My involvement may, but the story will go on...."
I said what do you think would be more interesting.... telling a story prior to PHANTOM MENANCE or after RETURN OF THE JEDI?
(Lucas) said, no question about it, prior to PHANTOM MENACE. He said, that if he did ever do another storyline.... that he would do when the Jedi regained control of the universe from the Dark Lords (there were many of them) 800 years before PHANTOM MENACE. And a young Jedi named Yoda was instrumental in the effort.
None of these stories are (or can truly be) confirmed at this moment, so only time will tell. [via]

A quiz from Jon's blog: What's Your World View?
You scored as Existentialist. Existentialism emphasizes human capability. There is no greater power interfering with life and thus it is up to us to make things happen. Sometimes considered a negative and depressing world view, your optimism towards human accomplishment is immense. Mankind is condemned to be free and must accept the responsibility.

I guess I agree with that.
Oddly, I actually tied in my score with:
You scored as Cultural Creative. Cultural Creatives are probably the newest group to enter this realm. You are a modern thinker who tends to shy away from organized religion but still feels as if there is something greater than ourselves. You are very spiritual, even if you are not religious. Life has a meaning outside of the rational.
Those things seem mutually exclusive to me. Maybe that is an insight into the enigma that is my brain.

About half of its 3000 ATMs will have the system by September. Other major national and regional banks have also said they're adopting the system. [

Lake disappears, baffling villagers
MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian village was left baffled Thursday after its lake disappeared overnight.
NTV television showed pictures of a giant muddy hole bathed in summer sun, while fishermen from the village of Bolotnikovo looked on disconsolately.
"It is very dangerous. If a person had been in this disaster, he would have had almost no chance of survival. The trees flew downwards, under the ground," said Dmitry Zaitsev, a local Emergencies Ministry official interviewed by the channel.
Officials in Nizhegorodskaya region, on the Volga river east of Moscow, said water in the lake might have been sucked down into an underground water-course or cave system, but some villagers had more sinister explanations.

SAD CANADIAN GIRL WANTS CALIFORNIAN FRIENDS
Hey all....my sister is coming down to visit her new niece. Due to Air Canada being real dicks, she is stuck down here for 6 days. Even I would have trouble staring at Keira for six days straight, so she was thinking about taking some time to go down to Disneyland. Problem is that nobody really wants to go to Disneyland alone, so she was wondering if I could find anybody else who wants to go to Disneyland with her. Anybody interested? She's thinking of going down the weekend of the 28th/29th. Chris Paduan is thinking of going with her, and we're hoping to turn it into a Disneyland party! If you are at all interested, please let me know at d_m_a_c_l_a_c_h@m_a_c.c_o_m (minus the underscores of course) and I'll connect you with her. How can Disneyland be the happiest place on earth if you are all alone? Guaranteed that she will say Out and About with a Canadian accent, and you can tease her aboot it. Also guaranteed that she will say eh at least once in every conversation, and will happily discuss dogsledding and igloo construction techniques with anyone who's interested.

After opening a window to any one of these contacts with the message "Hey check this out," it invites users to follow an embedded link. Anyone who clicks on this will risk becoming its next victim.
On machines where infection is successful, the worm creates a backdoor into Internet Relay Chat to download and run files on the instruction of the attacker, giving remote access to that PC. [

Weekend Report
"I feel like I got into a bar fight."
Friday night: Morgan's Birthday Party. Very fun until I ate fish, got sick.
Saturday: Flea market at the crack of dawn with Martinha and offspring, then to Esther's B-day picnic in the park. Good times. Then timing belt broke on doom buggy. Bleh. Pushed car home and then went to see the Fuses (Fus's Family is in town, but they don't have family names, per say, in Iceland so we decided to call them the Fuses)
Sunday: Fixed car. Ok, Carl fixed my car, but I provided moral support.
Watched: 21 Grams - Pretty good, although the time shift thing was overdone.
Ocean's 12 - Also pretty good. Standard hiest movie with plot twist. Good stuff if you are brain dead.
Health: Was up 'til 3 with fish sickness. Got sunburned at Esther's thing. Managed to sleep in one day. Net Gain on HP is 0 overall.
This week: Cats, La Fondue, D&D, and Star Wars. Then I'm taking a break.

Silent 'Piano Man' poses beach riddle
LONDON (Reuters) - A smartly dressed man found wandering in a soaking wet suit near an English beach has baffled police and care workers after he refused to say a word and then gave a virtuoso piano performance.
The man, wearing a formal black suit and tie, was spotted by police in Kent on April 8 and taken to a psychiatric unit where it proved impossible to identify him because he stayed silent.
It was only after he was given a pen and paper that care-givers were given an intriguing clue to his possible background when he drew an intricate picture of a grand piano.
He was taken to the hospital's chapel where he played classical music on the piano for hours. [

Centrifugal weapon could deliver stealth firepower
A gun that spits out ball bearings after spinning them to extreme speeds is being developed by a US inventor.
The gun consists of a mounted circular chamber that spins the metal ball bearings to high speed. A release mechanism on one side spits the balls out one behind the other, a handful at a time.
St George says the projectiles travel at around 300 metres per second upon release from the weapon, about the same speed as a handgun round. He claims a fully developed DREAD gun would be quieter than a conventional gun, less prone to malfunction, and could contain more ammunition.
DREAD also releases its balls in extremely rapid succession, which allows it to unleash formidable firepower against a target. [

Japanese invent battery that runs on blood
A Japanese research team has developed a fuel cell that runs on blood without using toxic substances, opening the way for use in artificial hearts and other organs. The biological fuel cell uses glucose, a sugar in blood, with a non-toxic substance used to draw electrons from glucose, said the team led by Matsuhiko Nishizawa, bio-engineering professor at the graduate school of state-run Tohoku University. 3 killed over role-playing game
A 21-year-old man and his parents were killed after the man agreed to be murdered along with his family if he lost a murder-mystery role-playing game, local media reported Saturday. Authorities said the man and two others were playing characters who might be murdered depending on the outcome of the game. After Thiago Andrade Guedes lost, he allegedly allowed the other men to carry out the killings, just as happened in the game. [

From Esther:
Greetings!
I’m putting together a picnic potluck at the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden this Saturday (May 14). It should be a lovely time of year to visit, so come smell the roses!
Also, if we get terribly bored there (or if it starts raining), the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum is across the street. There’s also a Zanotto’s market nearby, in the unlikely event of a food shortage.
We're planning to meet there around 1:30. It's an open invitation, so bring friends – the more the merrier! If you have any questions about location, food, etc, drop me a line. Hope to see you there!

Oh, it's Been Brought'en: Gates Says IPod Success Won't Last
FRANKFURT, Germany - Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates says Apple Computer Inc. shouldn't get too comfortable atop the portable music playing world.
"I don't think the success of the iPod can continue in the long term, however good Apple may be," the chairman of Microsoft, the world's biggest maker of computer software, was quoted as telling German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in an interview published Thursday.
"I think you can draw parallels here with the computer — here, too, Apple was once extremely strong with its Macintosh and graphic user interface, like with the iPod today, and then lost its position." [

CT Scans Show What King Tut Looked Like

| CAIRO, Egypt - The models show a baby-faced young man with chubby cheeks and his family's characteristic overbite, a weak chin and a pronounced, sloping nose beneath an elongated scalp.
Three teams of scientists have created the first facial reconstructions of King Tutankhamun based on CT scans of his mummy. The images are strikingly similar both to each other and to ancient portraits of the boy pharaoh, including his depiction on the famed golden mask he wore into the crypt. |

CENTRALIA, Wash. -- Five pink flamingo yard ornaments have returned to Tom Singer's home in Centralia as mysteriously as they disappeared.
Singer says he found the ornaments on his porch last week with no note or explanation.
When they were taken a week earlier, the bird-napper left a message demanding a ransom of candy bars be left in a mailbox or, it warned, pink heads would roll. Singer didn't pay. Instead he left a note saying to read the police blotter in the newspaper. [

Back to basics: The Germany Issue
German cannibalism on the up-and-up A cannibal confessed yesterday to a court in Berlin that he had killed a teacher and fed the man's lungs to his cat before he had sliced off and salted other parts of his body with a view to eating them later. Ralf Meyer, 41, a decorator, was clearly emulating Armin Meiwes, the "Cannibal of Rotenburg", who was jailed last year for murdering and eating a software specialist ... Police estimate from internet exchanges that there are 204 Germans ready to be slaughtered to feed a cannibal, 13 are ready to watch such an act and 29 would like to eat a human being. [

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Ya, I was confused. Carl, who was with me and who has not read the books wasn't, but I, who have ready them time and again, was. Paduan seemed to think it made sense...
It wasn't aweful. I'm sure it would make many people who would have never read the book go ahead and give it a whirl, but I think I have to sit and fgure out why the took every third page out of the book and then produced that as a move. Literally, not just chunks, but literally, it was every third page.
What's more, is they seemed to have taken all the funny parts out. They dismissed every explanation for anything that the people were doing, and just kind of ran willy-nilly. If I hand't read the books, I would have been even more confused in a "what's my motivation?" sort of way. However, eveyone that I know that hasn't heard he original rdio play, or read the boks, or seen the older movies seems to think it was great.
This makes me more confused.

Video Game Music in Concert
From Neil's Blog:
When I met Jack Wall, he was John Cale's recording engineer, and was engaged to my friend Cindy. And now he and Cindy have been married forever, have a daughter named Grace, and I've watched Jack create a career writing music for games. Recently Jack told me about his latest project -- he wanted to put game music onto the concert stage.
Which is an idea I found simultaneously odd ("Right," says a cynical little Neil with horns and a pitchfork on my left shoulder,"because the world needs to hear the Mario theme rendered by a sixty piece orchestra") and really cool ("Well, yes," says the homuncule me in the white robe with the wings on my right shoulder, "that might be really interesting. And think about the variety of game music around these days. It's not just things going blippetyblobbleblop, after all. It also may wind up both getting people into concert halls who would never go, while at the same time exposing the people who do go to concerts to an entirely new field of music...").
Anyway, Jack and his friends have made it happen. Video Games Live debuts on Wednesday, July 6th at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles featuring the LA Philharmonic. Then it goes all over the US. Check it out at videogameslive.com
You know, I might be down for that. I recommended the Prince of Persia Soundtrack as it is beautifully done and perfect for Orchestral arrangement.
Europeans to Counter Google Print Project
PARIS - The world according to Google? Europeans have long bemoaned the influence of Hollywood movies on their culture. Now plans by Google Inc. to create a massive digital library have triggered such strong fears in Europe about Anglo-American cultural dominance that one critic is warning of a "unilateral command of the thought of the world."
For Europeans, the fear is that the continent's contribution to the pillars of recorded knowledge will be crushed by a profit-oriented California company — and may end up presenting a U.S.-centric version of the world's literary legacy.
Google's ambitions are grand — if a bit more modest than the hostile corporate takeover of the tiller of world literature that many critics seem to be imagining.
The project, announced in December, involves scanning millions of books at the libraries of four universities — Oxford, Harvard, Stanford and the University of Michigan — as well as the New York Public Library and putting them online. It will take years to complete.
So great is the concern that six European leaders have jointly proposed creating a "European digital library" to counter the project by Google Print, as the new venture is known. Other countries are expected to come on board. [
