OSLO, Norway (Reuters) -- A Norwegian court has sentenced a woman to nine months in jail for raping a man, the first such conviction in the Scandinavian country that prides itself for its egalitarianism.

Florida Governor Signs Deadly Force Law
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Reuters) - Florida Gov. Jeb Bush signed a new anti-crime law on Tuesday that allows people to kill in self-defense without first trying to flee.
Supporters say the law is a logical extension of common law that allows homeowners who fear for their lives to use deadly force to defend themselves from an intruder in their homes.
The new law expands that doctrine to include people in public places who feel threatened and could be subject to death or great bodily harm. [

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Doctors found around 50 maggots in the ears of an 84-year-old Thai man after he went to hospital complaining of an itch.
Wednesday's Nation newspaper said Anan Temtan, who lives in the tsunami-hit southern resort island of Phuket, had used cotton buds to relieve the itching, but had scratched so hard his eardrums ruptured and started bleeding.
"We believe flies might have gone inside his ears to lay eggs, which hatched into larvae and caused the itching," said Somsak Nonthasri, the doctor who treated him.
Somsak, who used tweezers and a small suction device to remove the maggots, said Anan would be kept in for observation for a while to make sure no more eggs hatched.

Ghost concert to revive music of the past
Paris - Music lovers in North Carolina are due for a strange treat next month.
They will hear two piano virtuosi in concert... but both musicians are long dead.
The music will be played on a grand piano that has been specially programmed to give a note-perfect, live rendition of ancient recordings made by Alfred Cortot in 1928 and Glenn Gould in 1962.
"The piano will replicate every note struck, down to the velocity of the hammer and position of the key when it was played," the British weekly magazine New Scientist reports in next Saturday's issue.
The key to the phantom concert lies in the transcription of the scratchy recordings into a high-resolution version of MIDI, the standard format for encoding music for computers. [

OK, so this new Mac Mini thing is great. I mean it is sweet and sexy and just awesome. I gotta get one. You know, crime fighters have a whole lot on their plates to be futzing around with spyware and viruses and such, and as evil empires go, Microsoft is just on this side of a bald head and cat....
So I’m thinking of switching everything over to OS X and Apple hardware. Plus, how bad would it look to defeat Dr. Fiend and then everyone finds out it’s him with the iPod, not me. How embarrassing would that be?
Oh, and remember kids, don’t steal music.

Smell and taste what's on your screen

Trisenx has created a device called the
Scent Dome that allows users to smell products sold online, or create and e-mail their own scents. There are different scent cartridges for different purposes, or you could customise your own. You use it by plugging it into the serial port of your PC and installing their Senxware software.
If this sounds familiar to you, you might be thinking of the Kaori Web System, another scent dispenser for computers. Created by K. Opticom, the server sends the attached scent diffuser a signal to release the appropriate scent, prepared beforehand, to match what you are currently viewing online. (Via
CNetAsia.) Or you might be thinking of Telewest Broadband's
ScentMail. Plug in their version of a "scent dome", and you can send and receive special codes via internet that translate into specific smells. The diffuser sprays them into the air around the PC.

Any one of these, IMO, are greatly preferable to the
TasteScreen, especially considering what dust-magnets monitors are. This USB device, with 20 plastic flavour cartridges, is mounted on top of your monitor, and drips controlled quantities of flavouring down the screen, coating it with a thin film of liquid. (Via
CNETAsia.)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - An Indian who became a man to marry a female relative was dumped after the surgery, a newspaper reported Monday.
Twenty-nine-year-old rubber tapper Kuttiyamma, born with both male and female genitals, had been in love with the relative, Laura, 25, for 15 years before having surgery to become a man and change her name to Binu, the Hindustan Times reported.
But Laura became engaged to another man and Binu is suing her for breach of trust after spending 50,000 rupees ($1,150) on the sex change in southern Kerala state.
"She had agreed to marry me after the surgery," the paper quoted Binu saying in the petition. "I took loans to pay the hospital bills."
Laura's fiance has since backed out of the wedding after hearing of Binu. The paper did not say how Laura and Kuttiyamma/Binu are related.

Experts Solve Mystery of Unpopped Popcorn
Eat your way to the bottom of almost any bag of popcorn and there they are: the rock-hard, jaw-rattling unpopped kernels known as old maids.
The nuisance kernels have kept many a dentist busy, but their days could be numbered: Scientists say they now know why some popcorn kernels resist popping into puffy white globes.
It's long been known that popcorn kernels must have a precise moisture level in their starchy center — about 15 percent — to explode. But Purdue University researchers found the key to a kernel's explosive success lies in the composition of its hull.
Unpopped kernels, it turns out, have leaky hulls that prevent the moisture pressure buildup needed for them to pop and lack the optimal hull structure that allows most kernels to explode. [

4. Zoom back in a few levels
Interesting. Note: you can't zoom in very far from there before you get blocked.

Japanese health-conscious fridge

A range of Japanese "vitamin home electronics" devices - from a lamp which helps form Vitamin D to an air purifier that spreads Vitamin C- is trying to meet the demands of health-conscious consumers.
Mitsubishi Electric has launched a fridge with a tiny box which creates orange LEDs that promote photosynthesis in the greens stored in the fridge. The orange light creates chlorophyll in vegetables, making them look greener after several days in the fridge. The company found that after three days vitamin C rose by 10 percent in broccoli sprouts, compared with a 25 percent drop in conventional fridges, and the vitamin was 14-16 percent higher in cabbages after three days.
But the fridge will not be exported for now, as Mitsubishi Electric doubts other countries have the same market as Japan where consumers are health conscious and mostly urban, making fresh daily vegetables harder to obtain. [

Lucky's former owner, Nick Sigmon, 19, and his friend Paul Collins, 21, pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty charges for taping an M-1000 - a firecracker with the power of a quarter of a stick of dynamite - into Castro Valley's Lake Don Castro on July 13. The explosive failed to detonate. After pulling Lucky from the lake, the defendants debated trying again but decided against it, authorities said. East Bay Regional Park District police were called after pictures of the incident wound up on the Internet. [

Captain Veronica Ntepe said the 32-year-old woman from Mahlatswetsa, near Excelsior, was woken up on Thursday night when a man broke into her bedroom at around 11pm. While allegedly raping the woman, the man forced his tongue into her mouth. 'This was the gravest mistake he made. The woman bit (off) the front part of his tongue,' Ntepe said. The man immediately ran away. The woman called the police and handed over the piece of tongue... The 23-year-old man, from Mahlatswetsa, will face charges of rape and house-breaking.
Photo Confusion
So, apparently there's been some level of confusion about the photo situation. I have set up some rules of thumb:
1) If you see a picture on the blog, it is *NOT* from Yahoo photos.
2) If you can click through a picture, and it was taken by me, it is from Flickr. I only use this to show stuff on my blog. Yahoo doesn't allow direct linking or have a cool litttle thumbnail viewer thing. Go ahead and click through to see a larger image, but it's probably one of a bunch that you can find at Yahoo.
3) If it's a random photo posted of something else, it is either offsite, or posted through Hello - it's just there for you to look at.
4) Yahoo is the definitive place to actually see any photo taken by me. If you want to see all the pictures I took somewhere (like all of tha garbage photos for example), always click the "Noelle's Photos" link on the sidebar.
I probably have confused you even more, but people keep telling me that they tried to click on pictures and get sent to Flickr and can't find the rest of the photos.
For those of you who are now going to ask why I don't just put *everything* on Flickr, I have a couple answers:
1) There's 30-something albums and hundreds of photos and I simply don't have that kind of time.
2) I am not sure I even have all of them electronically anymore - yeah, I know I could download them from Yahoo, screw off, I'm still not doing it.
3) Most Importantly: Anything I put on Flickr will show up in that feature thumbnail thingy - I don't want that. I want that to be a showcase of pics that I like a lot and want up there.
Ok, hope that makes things more clear. Basically:
Go to Yahoo, if you are interested. The link is always there for you.

"A young mum was run over and killed by her own car - after broken parts sparked a freak chain reaction. Alison Taylor's Peugeot 405 wouldn't start so she got out and banged the engine with a hammer. But the blows triggered the broken starter motor and because the keys were still in the ignition, the engine started. The handbrake should have stopped the car lurching forward - but that was broken as well, an inquest heard. Even then the momentum of the car would not have been enough to cause a problem. "A 17-year-old Morrisville youth was being held on $100,000 bail after police said he raided a tomb in a cemetery and removed a head from a corpse... when [police] went to Morrisville Cemetery and investigated, they found that someone had broken into a tomb, broken open the casket and removed a man's head... Nickolas Buckalew, 17, later was arrested and charged with unauthorized removal of a dead body. He pleaded innocent to the crime. Police believe they have a strong case against Buckalew because remains and evidence were found in a silo near the suspect's home... Court documents said the suspect allegedly talked of using the man's head as a bong or a pipe for smoking marijuana." [

Re: The big move
Well, I tried - but somehow emailing to the blog address didn't work. I guess I could have tried sending to Flickr but that seemed excessive to show you a standard cube with a half wall on the outside ;-)
But, oh boy, do I have plans for the cube. I am waiting to see about getting hired so as not to jinx it, but when it is really mine, I intend to make it truely a playpen! (I wonder if they have really big mobiles...)
Re: The big move
My new cube already has a title: The playpen
I think a nick like that calls for some cameraphone snapshots! ;-)

Woman Charged in Road-Rage Apartment Ramming
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters) - A woman has been arrested after she rammed a car into her neighbor's apartment in an apparent fight over a loud television, Canadian police said on Thursday.
The Penticton, British Columbia, woman got into her 1985 BMW after becoming upset with her neighbor and drove the car across the lawn and through some patio furniture before the vehicle hit the side of the building, police said.
There were no injuries in the incident that took place late on Wednesday, although the neighbor and a friend were inside the building watching television at the time of the crash. The vehicle received only minor damage.
The 36-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was being held in jail pending a court appearance.
You know, I know exactly how she was feeling. Man, that was stupid, but you gotta give her points for pure balls on that one.

Thief Hopping Mad After Stealing 25 Left Shoes
OSLO (Reuters) - A thief who stole 25 shoes got a little less than he or she bargained for after realizing they were all for left feet.
The robber threw away the haul in disgust after breaking into a car in the Norwegian city of Bergen and finding a case full of women's shoes -- but no pairs. It belonged to a salesman who traveled with only one shoe of each type.
So they searched the house of the woman who found the finger in her Chili
They didn't say what they found, but it was suspected that the finger was that of her dead aunt's.

Magnetic Termite Mounds
Ok, one more..
So I'm flipping around and I come across Aminal Planet. They are doing the extreme animal architecture countdown (who thinks of these things???). Anyway, #1 is magnetic termite mounds. They are flat, huge mounds that termites in Australia build that face North. When the sun comes up or down, the shady side is 40 degrees cooler than the side to the sun. Since they are super thin, when the sun is at full force at noon and is directly overhead, the don't absorb much heat at all.
This is genius. To top it off, the termites are blind and do the whole thing based off of their sensitivity to the earth's magnetic fields. What a trip.
Here's a bit of info and a photo.
Ok, goin to bed
Maybe this will be the first time in 6 days I have gotten to sleep before 3:30. It's amazing that I can still understand English at this point.
re: Another Random Link
Just had a sec to look at this...
Thanks, Wendy, for sending me back to Homestar. We posted about it a VERY long time ago (like when the blog first started), but it's always good to get reminded to go back.
My pumpkin last year was strongbad. Paduan's was Trogdor (the burninator). Go look in the photos section, I bet you'll crack up at it now - and were probably really confused about what the hell I was doing at the time....

Rad... I need to fully explore the site too. Keep posting these, I need to be told to stop loking at weird news articles every now and then!
DUDE! LIVE ACTION MECH WARRIOR!!!!!!
So. Much Work.
Ya, so I have been busy. Working all the damned time - at work and at home. Luckily, I appear to be close to done - or at least getting more reasonable thanks to loading my largest client's new site tonight. Still have stuff to do, but hopefully it won't be nearly as insaine as it has been.
In the upside, I earned well over $1200 in the last week, and probably a couple more before I am done. These clients are ogoing too so that's a nice source of a couple hundred a month if they keep a nomal stride.
Well, toys are paid for at least. :-)
I don't know if I could have done this if I didn't have my latop. I have no idea how I lived without it. I couldn't stand being trapped in my office for that long, and all that wrk I did in bed wouldn't have happened. I love posting to the blog from the comfort of my couch! :-D
Hopefully I'll be back to normal shortly.
Managed to stay home all day and still work through until midnight
*sigh*
Basically, I just got to sleep in. Still did like 8 hours of work...

Law Expands Right to Kill in Self-Defense
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Reuters) - People in Florida will be allowed to kill in self-defense on the street without trying to flee under a new law passed by state politicians on Tuesday that critics say will bring a Wild West mentality and innocent deaths.
The Florida House of Representatives, citing the need to allow people to "stand their ground," voted 94-20 to codify and expand court rulings that already allow people to use deadly force to protect themselves in their homes without first trying to escape.
The new bill goes further by allowing citizens to use deadly force in a public place if they have a reasonable belief they are in danger of death or great bodily harm. It applies to all means of force that may result in death, although the legislative debate focused on guns. [

Another Random Link
This one is pretty cool! My friend, John, recommended it, saying "I can't believe you haven't seen it, Wendy. It's so you." There's a ton of stuff here. If you'd like to get started in some sort of logical order, try going to the "characters" section first. Watch the one about Homestarrunner (main chacter) and Strongbad (best loved character). Then, try some "sb emails." I highly recommend these two:
techno and
games. If you have a lot of time, try playing some of the
video games.
At home today
Had a migrain when I woke up so doing some work from home and sleeping - email or call cell if you need me.
Will Wright wows GDC with new Sim
SAN FRANCISCO--On the final day of the Game Developers Conference, Will Wright's "Future of Content" presentation contained a special treat for the bursting-beyond-capacity audience.
The treat was an extended demonstration of his next game, called Spore--a sim that allows the players to control life on all conceivable scales--an emergent and beautiful simulation game that ranges from the cellular level all the way to the galactic level.
The game allows the player to begin with developing a creature as a cellular entity and eventually creating a creature with more sophisticated brain functions, which will change the nature of the game to a more RTS-type game (he cited a particular favorite of his, Populous), where players will control herds of creatures. Once you upgrade the "hut" around which the creatures centralize, the game changes into what he called "a simple version of SimCity" where the player manages technology and interacts with other cities that have sprung up around the world.
He demonstrated how the player can eventually purchase a UFO to travel between planets--and eventually star systems--to populate, conquer, or simply observe. Particularly impressive was the game's emergent gameplay and seemingly infinite possibilities for playing creatively--two qualities that define Will Wright's celebrity status in game design. [

NEW ORLEANS - Thousands of oil and natural gas platforms in the Gulf of Mexico could be converted into deep-sea fish farms raising red snapper, mahi mahi, yellow fin tuna and flounder, under a plan backed by the Bush administration.
For years, marine biologists and oil companies have experimented using the giant platforms as bases for mariculture, but commercial use of the platforms as fish farms never got off the ground because of the federal government's reluctance to open up the oceans to farming. [

So. Damned. Tired.

Hopefully, I will be able to pay off the laptop pretty quick though....
Sin City
Saw Sin City last night. It was actually *really* well done. It was by far the best interpretation of exactly what a comic book looks like that I have ever seen. The story line was good, and also done in a very comic books sort of way. I was impressed.
Oh and Elija Wood is by far the creepiest individual on the planet now.
Now I get to work all weekend to pay for all of these toys
But I am thankful that people are sending me enough work so that I can!
Yet Another New Toy
For some reason, I was offered a huge chunk of the money if I wanted to get the
Zire 72 GPS kit from Palm, which inclides a Palm and GPS unit, plus every known map of the universe - and I mean this thing will tell me where I can to the dentist on Mars.
The Palm itself has a 1.2 megapixel Camera, which throws prety hi-res images, as well as an MP3 player, etc in it. The beauty of the whole thing is that it syncs with my yahoo stuff so I don't have to maintain another database of stuff to accomodate it. Nice. Oh, and it matches my phone, which matches my camera, which matches my laptop.
Anyway, it's really fun, the GPS talks to me and tells me "Turn around when possible!!" when I have missed my turn. That's pretty cool.

Google Doubles E-Mail Space
SAN JOSE, Calif. - A year after unveiling a free e-mail service with a full gigabyte of storage, Google Inc. is doubling the capacity of each account and plans to keep bumping up the limit in the future.
Once the upgrade takes effect Friday, Gmail users will be able to store up to 2 gigabytes of e-mail and attachments for each account. Even more capacity will be made available after that as it becomes feasible, the company said.
"Our goal is to make sure storage is no longer an issue for Web mail users," said Marissa Mayer, Google's director of consumer Web products. [
