OK, the Internet kinda works
List of science fiction books.

I used this list to find a book that I've been trying to find for 10 years. I couldn't remember the title, author, or any of the characters' names. Stephanie suggested I search for some of the plot on google and I can't believe I actually found it.

Stephanie says "The Internet is YOUR FRIEND!"

By FCC standards, Oprah more dangerous than Stern
This is how insane things have become: One morning last week, the general manager for the flagship station of Howard Stern's radio show told Stern not to play an excerpt from ''Oprah'' because the salacious content could result in a massive fine from the FCC.

Again: Oprah was deemed too racy and risky for Stern. [more]

Neil is the next President!!!
Some blog had a presidential death match and it turns out that they picked Neil as the next President. I'd go with that except for that silly rule about having to have been born here.

Neil said this about it:
On the downside, I have Lord Havelock Vetinari as my Vice-President, Terry Pratchett's Patrician. Which means that my main function as President of the USA would be to think I'm in charge, be a prime assassination target and the butt of the anger of the crowds, while my Vice-President actually runs the country, dictates foreign policy, and keeps me in office (and alive) as long as I'm useful to him...

I particularly enjoyed the next to last round:
Terry Pratchett / Neil Gaiman: Good Shit.
211 (63.7%)

Lord Havelock Vetinari / Johnny Depp: Political Shit.
114 (34.4%)

Eowyn / Commander Sam Vimes: I will kill your Shit.
87 (26.3%)

Captain Jack Sparrow / A.J. Crowley: Your Shit is ours.
141 (42.6%)

The AIM Connection
So IM will now forward my messages to my phone if I am offline. For those of you who use AIM, you will see a little phone, for those of you on that silly iChat thing, you won't know (Mwahahaha). Trillian peole apparently don't get to IM me at all. So, if you see me online, but think it's way too late, you may be messaging me on my phone and I may or may not answer depending on where I am... (sorry Jon!)

She lives
After 24 hours of my mind and my body not wanting to reside in the same place, I am better. I am home again today as I feel like I was put through the ringer - I have a headache, am totally dehydrated, but thanking the powers that be that I do not feel like I did yesterday.

Thanks to everyone who called with concern and help and thanks especially to Carl who came over with every fluid I could possibly want and applesauce. You rock.

Look What You Can Recycle In SJ
I was having a discussion last weekend with some folks and they had some ideas about what one can and can't recycle in good old San Jose. They had me wondering what one can recycle anyway. So I went to the San Jose Recycling Organization and checked out the the residential recycling chart. Envelopes with windows? Ok. Styrofoam and polystyrene food containers? Ok. Juice boxes? Interestingly enough, also ok. So, if you're curious, check it out.

Home, violently sick with food poisoning today
I don't wanna die...

I have never had food poisoning before. This is the most horrible thing ever to have your body go through.

I did not go to bed last night at all. I can't even keep water down. I have to keep trying stuff though because I am getting really shakey and dehydrated.

If anyone has advice or some cure, please call my cell - I probably won't be online again today until I feel better.

no taser for me
Got this from Sephora today:
Hi Noelle,

Thank you again for coming in to interview for the position of Associate Producer.

We did just offer the position to one of the five final candidates, who also had been
temping/contracting in the position for the past few months, and she has just accepted.

We enjoyed meeting you - all of us - and will keep your resume, if another position opens up here
that suits your skills and experience. In the meantime, we wish you the very best in your search.

Thanks again for your interest.

Best regards,

Jennie

Oh well, I will keep looking

RE: What did you do tonight Noelle?
Not to be too much of a downer, but don't you need a concealed weapons permit to carry a stun gun legally? Unless you're going to put it into a holster, which might alarm some people. ;-) Pepper spray is good, but it doesn't work on some people and if you are truly motivated you can train yourself not to be incapacitated by it. Have you thought about a karate class, so you can kick someone's ass with your bare hands. (Terribly mixed metaphor, I know, but I stand by it.)

RE: What did you do tonight Noelle?
I wouldn't bother with the stun gun, go with pepper spray. Cheaper, faster and just as effective (and a longer range). Just make sure that you are upwind ;-)

Re: What did you do tonight Noelle?
I think you should get the smaller one cause you'd be more likey to carry it. It's a lot smaller, more convienent, can o' whoop ass.

What did you do tonight Noelle?
Well, since you asked, among other things, I looked online for a taser. I learned that tasers are actually projectile weapons that shoot these electric wires out from a gun-like object. See here. These take training and are like $300 - $400.

As stun gun, on the other hand is that little handheld device with electrodes on the end that you jab into someone and fire. This, apparently, is what I am looking for. Here's the one I am thinking of getting if I have to do the trek to the train station in SF at night. It's the highest amount of voltage that I could find (625,000V), but it's large. I may go with this one as it is a couple inches smaller but only 500,000V. I do want to make sure that the job gets done in the event that I have to use it.

Morgan has volunteered to let me stun him to make sure it works well.

This is definitely worse than leaving the fish pan to catch fire in the oven (although we may want to note that icky fish sticks were involved in both incidents):

Oven Gets Hot, Woman Gets Shot
SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - A Texas woman heating fish sticks was shot in the leg by a gun that had been stashed in her oven, police said.

Roxanne Perez, 29, was taken to a local hospital where she was in good condition, police said Friday.

They said a friend of hers had hidden the .357 caliber handgun in the stove two weeks earlier without telling her after she told him no guns were allowed in her house.

When Perez heated up the fish sticks she also heated up the gun, which caused several rounds to be fired. One hit her in the leg.

No charges have been filed because the shooting was accidental, police said.

Duchovny dishes about X-FILES 2
According to an interview with David Duchovny, a sequel to THE X-FILES movie is "definitely happening." The Moviehole website reports straight from the actor's mouth that franchise creator Chris Carter has an idea for the second X-FILES movie and Duchovny expects to don his FBI agent's suit again sometime in the next year.

Duchovny also let slip a little bit of what we can expect to see in the movie. "I think we're going to be introducing a new character in the film which will allow us to cast a major star, male or female, who will want to be part of an exciting supernatural thriller," Duchovny said. "I think the new movie will appeal to both our core fans and a broad audience. I'm very excited about it."

Lyrics: Coming Back - The Crystal Method
I know that I don't understand
The way my feeling's roam
I've got to look outside again
And wonder where I've gone

I looked into someone's eye's again
And it's been lost..so long
I never wanted to talk again
I tried to silence you

You keep coming back again
You keep coming back for more

And then you come back and haunt my mind
You try to make me look good
You know i just dont have the time
I never, ever understood

Gaudy night: Superhero stories and our own
by Jim Henley | Mar 21, 2004
While the audience of the monthly, 32-page comic book continues to decline, superheroes are more popular than ever....The obvious question is whether superheroes deserve their continued hold on our wallets and dreams, or whether they represent the triumph of schlock culture....If science fiction is the literature of ideas, the superhero story is the literature of ethics. This is an interesting article. I've pulled out a few quotes but I think the whole thing is worth reading.

I hate waiting
I want Sephora to call right now and hand down my fate.

Working at eBay
Anybody know anybody that works (or worked) for eBay? If so, please send any info you can to mhay@yahoo.com. Stories (good or bad), contacts, rumors, ... whatever.

I have a friend who is thinking about taking a job at eBay, but they wanna learn more about the culture. I figure at least one of Noelle's friends must have some scoop on eBay.

This memo is kinda scary. It'd be nice to know if this is authentic and/or typical.

re: Early humans swapped bite for brain
That's interesting, but something seems to be missing. This mutation would explain why the muscles around the brain loosened and allowed brain development, but what explains the brain actually getting bigger? Unless it's the case that brain muscle just wants to keep growing and it is only constrained by the space enclosing it. But then it seems like people would die from the pressure of their brain exerted against their heads.

Also, since I assume the muscle is still weakened, are people's brains continuing to get bigger? In 50,000 years, will we be like the aliens on the original Star Trek pilot episode "The Cage"?

re: Sephora
Interview went really well - they liked me a lot. It was odd because they kept telling me how wonderful my resume was and how they couldn't believe that I could do what I do. I have no idea what to say to that because I just do it. In fact, I think if I don't get the job, it is only because one of them thinks that I am over qualified (HA!) and would get bored. I kept trying to tell her that I don't actually want to do as much as I do and that I am actually looking to be bored for a while.

Anyway, the job is cool, the company is awesome, the benifits rule (4 weeks paid vacation from the get go! + bonus at the end of Feb) and the people rock so if they offer it, I think I will take it. The down side is the commute, which is not that bad on 280, and they wills ubsidize parking or pay for a bart pass for me so I think it would be acceptable... I'll have to see. If I love the job and hate the commute, I could always move up the peninsula more when my lease is up. IF I end up hating the job, I can always start looking again.

OK, so everyone cross your fingers and if you have any opinions, I'd love to hear them.

Sephora
So I am off to my interview in 45 minutes. I hope that I do well, but I'm not really sure if I would take the job if they offer it to me. I'm setting down minimum numbers that they would have to throw at me to get me to make that commute and even then, I think I would only do it for a 6 months to a year or until I found something happy down here.

Either way, I am looking forward to leaving early, seeing the peninsula in the daytime, and seeing what working for a real company is like...

Wish me luck!

Early humans swapped bite for brain
Humans owe their big brains and sophisticated culture to a single genetic mutation that weakened our jaw muscles about 2.4 million years ago, a new study suggests.

The slack muscles relaxed their hold on the human skull, giving the brain room to grow. Other primates remained stuck with mighty muscles that squeezed the skull in a vice-like grip. [more]

Re: Sigmund Freud - analyze this
Wow... all that from a fellow non-believer.

I have two immediate thoughts from this:
1) dawn of the dead - mostly because I just saw it
2) What would Jesus do? Go shopping. Duh, Jesus is TOTALLY retail!

Sigmund Freud - analyze this
I dreamt that I was in a mall. In a shop that sold handbags and shoes. I was looking for a pair of old-fashioned lace up boots to wear with a Victorian dress. From the shop, I could see the center courtyard of the mall. The floor of the courtyard was made up of shiny tiles of blue and red. The tiles' pattern made the courtyard seem octagonal, or hexagonal, or some other agonal shape.

In the center stands Jesus, surrounded by his followers. His followers are all on wheeled conveyances of different types. Some on skates. Some in wheelchairs. Some in carts. Jesus stands with his feet directly on the courtyard floor.

Suddenly, a man in a spectacular wheelchair comes hurtling towards the group. Like something from Edward Scissorhands - the man is suspended in a standing position, with gleaming metal rails and bars extending spider-like to all sides. He rides angrily towards the crowd, which parts before him. He rolls through without stopping and exits out the other side, headed towards the store next to mine. Without pause, Jesus runs after the man. His followers immediately behind him.

As they near the store, it becomes apparent that the storeowners don't want them to enter. Nets began to fall from the ceiling. Nets intended to trap Jesus and his followers. That's when I notice that one of the followers is Noelle. She is riding on a low metallic cart. Her legs stretched out in front of her, she extends her arms to the sides and propels herself forward with the force of her hands against the floor. I see a net directly above her. But she sails through untouched! Noelle laughs - whether in triumph, surprise, or as an affirmation of faith, I could not say. Anyway, she laughs as she rolls into the store, behind Jesus.

None of the followers are trapped in the nets. Only bystanders and others trying to shop are captured. They began to cry out in terror. When I run to help them escape the nets, I see that their faces are disfigured and ugly. Women and many children with hideous and sickly features. Inside the store, I think it was a Musicland, I see Jesus and his followers wheeling about the store, transfixed by joy.

sephora job for noelle
Sephora.com is a nice site. However, I can almost guarantee that you will have to dress like a professional adult. Cosmetics site + fashion industry + San Francisco = snazzier clothes.

Or you might be able to get by if you dress weird. Weird can transcend dress codes.

There's a whole bunch of rules about how much of it has to be donated and how much can be from your pocket.

Plus, if I were her, I wouldnt let him spend my money on his campaign given the odds of him winning....

re: Net worth of presidential candidates
Yes, it is likely that since John Kerry comes from a wealthy family (and he's married to the Heinz heiress who also comes from a wealthy family) that his wealth is understated. Which is pretty mind-boggling to think about. I wonder why he doesn't spend more of that money on the campaign? Part of the reason I'm so surprised by these is that I keep reading that Bush has so much more money for the campaign than Kerry does.

Decisions, decisions....
So I had a phone interview with Sephora today. The woman deemed me "wonderful" and I am to go in for an actual interview on Weds. I am cocky, so I believe it's not going to be difficult to get the job. The problem is that it is in S.F. and do I really want to do that commute?

Ok, pros and cons:
Cons
Road Rage
Longer Hours
Possibly forced to dress like a professional adult (no concert shirts)
I work like 5 min from home now and can come home at lunch
Things are improving at Hell.com so I could probably stick it out until I find something good here

Pros
Sephora.com has a *fantastic* web presence, so it would be awesome on the resume
It's something new
It would be cool to get to know the City better
A job with respect
I could work there for 6 months and keep looking for something perfect down here....
Free Product

I guess it will come down to the numbers. If they make it worth my while to haul up to the city every day, I may just do it. I don't even have the job yet, but a decision may be eminent...

Thoughts?

Friday 5 (on Monday)
Since Kevin was out of town and has, and I ran across it through other means, I will take over Friday 5 for him:
If you...

1. ...owned a restaurant, what kind of food would you serve?
I would serve good food! It would probably be a place that serves only a few dishes from each ethnicity, but all of it was really good. I have always wanted to go to one of those places and never found one, so I guess I'd start the trend!

2. ...owned a small store, what kind of merchandise would you sell?
Hmmmm, perhaps comic books....

3. ...wrote a book, what genre would it be?
Fantasy... but it would probably suck to everyone but me.

4. ...ran a school, what would you teach?
Science, hands down.

5. ...recorded an album, what kind of music would be on it?
Probably all different kinds, but mostly electronica based.

Net worth of presidential candidates
I was surprised by this. Maybe I'm the only person who didn't know it, but it appears that Senator John Kerry's net worth is many times that of President George W. Bush.

Relaxing Weekend
So I had a largely relaxing weekend, which was nice for a change. Yesterday C.P. and I drove down almost all the way to Hearst Castle (160 miles south on 1) to look at the ocean and enjoy the nice day we were having. We saw elephant seals and lots of beautiful coast and that was the farthest I have ever driven south on the 1. It was cool. I highly recommend that for a nice day sometime.

Microsoft to Buy AOL?
According to this New York Post story Microsoft is investigating buying AOL from Time-Warner. Sources close to the deal said it would pose "few roadblocks" from anti-trust regulators. Few roadblocks? WTF? Hello: Netscape, Mozilla, nullsoft, AIM, MSN. Hello?????? Didn't they just get convicted of illegally monopolizing the browser market? Now the DOJ will roll over and let them buy the wasted shell of their former foe? And the main ISP in the country? And the main IM client? And say goodbye to the iTunes Music Store being one click away for AOL (errr, MSN?) users. There had better be some frickin' roadblocks to this.

White House Creates Fake News Pieces - And News Shows Run Them
WTF? The Department of Health and Human Services recently created faux news articles with actors posing as reporters to "inform beneficiaries about changes in Medicare." The source of the "informative news pieces" is not revealed. TV stations in several states have run the pieces. It would appear that some stations ran these things on news programs. By the end of 2005, the DHHS expects to have spent over $100 Million of your tax dollars on disseminating information on the changes on Medicare. Why is the government spending money on fake news pieces and why are TV news stations running them? i guess it must be the work of the biased liberal news media. Feh. [article]

Fwd: The Guys' Rules
This is a forward I got.

We always hear "the rules" from the female side.
Now here are the rules from the male side.
These are our rules!
Please note ... these are all numbered "1" ON PURPOSE!

1. Learn to work the toilet seat. You're a big girl. If it's up, put it down. We need it up, you need it down. You don't hear us complaining about you leaving it down.

1. Sunday sports. It's like the full moon or the changing of the tides. Let it be.

1. Shopping is NOT a sport. And no, we are never going to think of it that way.

1. Crying is blackmail.

1. Ask for what you want. Let us be clear on this one:
Subtle hints do not work!
Strong hints do not work!
Obvious hints do not work!
Just say it!

1. Yes, and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question.

1. Come to us with a problem only if you want help solving it. That's what we do. Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for.

1. A headache that lasts for 17 months is a problem. See a doctor.

1. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument. In fact, all comments become null and void after 7 days.

1. If you won't dress like the Victoria's Secret girls, don't expect us to act like soap opera guys.

1. If you think you're fat, you probably are. Don't ask us.

1. If something we said can be interpreted two ways and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the other one.

1. You can either ask us to do something or tell us how you want it done.
Not both. If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself.

1. Whenever possible, please say whatever you have to say during commercials.

1. Christopher Columbus did not need directions and neither do we.

1. ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings. Peach, for example, is a fruit, not a color. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have no idea what mauve is.

1. If it itches, it will be scratched. We do that.

1. If we ask what is wrong and you say "nothing," we will act like nothing's wrong. We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle.

1. If you ask a question you don't want an answer to, expect an answer you don't want to hear.

1. When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine...Really.

1. Don't ask us what we're thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as baseball, the shotgun formation, or monster trucks.

1. You have enough clothes.

1. You have too many shoes.

1. I am in shape. Round is a shape.

1. Thank you for reading this.

1. O'yeah... And if your girlfriend is fine, we more than likely want to hit that!

1. Yes, I know, I have to sleep on the couch tonight; but did you know men really don't mind that? It's like camping.

Muppets
For people looking for Muppets on DVD - they can be found here.

And speaking of... Muppets Head For Oz

ABC is readying a Muppet version of The Wizard of Oz with producers Jim Henson Productions and Fox TV Studios, Variety reported. The TV movie would likely be the first major production to emerge from Disney's deal to take control of the Muppets brand and characters, though the project was actually in the works long before the February sale was announced, the trade paper reported.

Debra Frank and Steven Hayes are writing a script, which will feature familiar Muppet characters retelling the classic Wizard of Oz story. It's possible the movie will include a human character as well, most likely Dorothy, insiders told the trade paper.

The movie will be based on the original L. Frank Baum novel The Wizard of Oz and not on the classic 1939 MGM musical.

Maine Man Calls Authorities When Self-Crucifiction Goes Awry
Ah, Maine, such a happy, happy state. A Hartland, Maine resident called 911 after realizing that he would not be able to nail in his second hand, once the first had been nailed to a makeshift cross with a fourteen penny nail. Officials were uncertain if he had called for medical assistance or for help nailing the other hand. Having worked at the tannery in Hartland, I would say that I too would be trying to crucify myself if I lived in that town. This fella evidently was seeing Jesus on his computer, and that drove him to this odd suicide attempt (and not, as one might guess, watching the new Mel Gibson movie). Makes me so proud. [article]

RE: Re: Where Are We Going? Planet 10!
[Pluto] is most definetly a comet already.

Depends to whom you are talking. The International Astronomical Union (in the most recent document I could find) says in this FAQ that they have no intention of recategorizing Pluto as a TNO and not a planet. I've found a number of pages on the whole Is Pluto A Planet topic (google is my friend, google loves me), such as this one and this one that argue that Pluto is, in fact, a planet. On the other hand, there are other astronomers such as Brian Marsden who would prefer that Pluto be categorized as a Kuiper Belt Object (KBO). As this article points out, most of the problem derives from not having a formal definition of what consitutes a planet.

As I said before: semantics. What would be really interesting would be to have more info on what Pluto is from close up observation. Unfortunately, it appears that the Bush administration cancelled the Pluto Fast Flyby mission a few years ago, so it while be quite a while before we get that. (Thanks, George.)

Re: Re: Where Are We Going? Planet 10!
Some members of the International Astronomical Union agree with Tyson and recommend that Pluto be demoted to "object."

This actually means demoted from a "comet" to an "object", not demoted from a planet to a comet.

It is most definetly a comet already.

Re: Re: Where Are We Going? Planet 10!
Some members of the International Astronomical Union agree with Tyson and recommend that Pluto be demoted to "object."

The operative phrase here is "some members." I meant to point this out in the original post, but forgot. The reason why there will be debate as to Planet X's planetness is that Pluto is already under debate for reclassification. As a counterpoint, the scientist who I heard on All Things Considered tonight offered that not only is Pluto (and by extension, Sedna) a planet, but there are likely hundreds of these dwarf planets in the outer Solar System, and this will likely be reflected in textbooks of the mid 21st century.

Really, this all comes down to semantics. When, oh when, will people stop haggling over silly things like semantics? *giggle*

Nun Faces Jail for Drunk Tractor Driving
WARSAW (Reuters) - A Polish Benedictine nun is facing jail for driving a tractor into a car while drunk outside her convent in southwestern Poland, police said on Friday.

He said the nun was 17 times over the country's legal alcohol limit for driving.

Rossellini Headlines Earthsea
SCI FI Channel has signed Isabella Rossellini to play the key role of High Priestess Thar in its upcoming original epic Earthsea, based on Ursula K. Le Guin's award-winning series of novels, the network announced. The four-hour miniseries will premiere as a two-night television event on SCI FI in December.

The epic fantasy follows the tale of a reckless youth destined to become the greatest sorcerer that the mystical land of Earthsea has ever known.

Earthsea is produced by Hallmark Entertainment, in association with Bender-Brown Productions. Gavin Scott (The Mists of Avalon) adapted Le Guin's work for the screen. Robert Halmi Sr. is executive producer, along with Lawrence Bender and Kevin Brown.

Demand an investigation into Bush's Medicare lies
In December 2003, Congress passed a Medicare bill written by and for the drug and insurance industries. The bill just barely passed as President Bush begged conservative Republicans for votes and assured them that the cost of the bill was under $400 billion.

Bush lied.

This week, we learned that chief Medicare actuary Richard Foster told the Bush administration weeks before the bill passed that the cost would be much, much higher. Instead of passing along this vital information to Congress, the administration threatened to fire Foster if he told the truth.

And just a few weeks after the Medicare bill passed, the administration admitted that the cost would be somewhere between $500 and $600 billion -- an even bigger windfall for the special interests.

Get your own imaginary girlfriend!
For some reason, I find this site incredibly fascinating and kinda funny...

Re: Where Are We Going? Planet 10!
Actually, Pluto is already not classified as a planet. It's a comet.

Here's a National Geographic article about it.

Recent visitors to the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City have been surprised to discover that Pluto is no longer considered a planet in the solar system.

"Pluto, being half ice by volume, should assume its rightful status as the King of the Kuiper Belt of comets," says Neil Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History.

Some members of the International Astronomical Union agree with Tyson and recommend that Pluto be demoted to "object."

Where Are We Going? Planet 10!
According to this article NASA scientists may have discovered a tenth planet orbiting the sun. It's smaller than Pluto (but larger than Charon), so there will likely be some debate as to whether it constitutes a planet at all. Still haven't found the large planet that makes Neptune's orbit wobble.

"In the spring and summer of 2001, a group of conservative legal scholars including former Supreme Court nominee Robert H. Participants say it was an informal, somewhat "messy" process conducted by e-mail and telephone so the text could be announced that July by a group of religious leaders called the Alliance for Marriage. According to the alliance's president, Matt Daniels, the drafters did not worry too much about the wording, because 'I don't think we expected that there would be this much attention paid to it.' Today is beautiful and the right temperature and the right shade of blue. Oh well, at least I made the smart move and went out on my lunch and rolled around in the grass for the hour. I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine, in a bag
I'm useless, but not for long
The future is coming on
I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine, in a bag
I'm useless, but not for long
The future is coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on

Yeah... Ha Ha!
Finally someone let me out of my cage
Now, time for me is nothing cos I'm counting no age
Now I couldn't be there
Now you shouldn't be scared
I'm good at repairs
And I'm under each snare
Intangible
Bet you didn't think so I command you to
Panoramic view
Look I'll make it all manageable
Pick and choose
Sit and lose
All you different crews
Chicks and dudes
Who you think is really kickin' tunes?
Picture you gettin' down in a picture tube
Like you lit the fuse
You think it's fictional
Mystical? Maybe
Spiritual
Hearable
What appears in you is a clearer view cos you're too crazy
Lifeless
To know the definition for what life is
Priceless
For you because I put you on the hype shit
You like it?
Gunsmokin' righteous with one token
Psychic among those
Possess you with one go

I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine, in a bag
I'm useless, but not for long
The future is coming on
I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine, in a bag
I'm useless, but not for long
The future is coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on

The essence the basics
Without it you make it
Allow me to make this
Child, like in nature

You have it or you don't that's a fallacy
I'm in them
Every sprouting tree
Every child apiece
Every cloud you see
You see with your eyes
I see destruction and demise
Corruption in disguise
From this fuckin' enterprise
Now I'm sucking to your lies
Through Russ, though not his muscles but the percussion he provides
With me as a guide
But y'all can see me now cos you don't see with your eye
You perceive with your mind
That's the inner
So I'm gonna stick around with Russ and be a mentor
With a few rhymes so mother fuckers
Remember where the thought is
I brought all this
So you can survive when law is lawless
Feelings, sensations that you thought were dead
No squealing, remember

I got sunshine, in a bag
I'm useless, but not for long

My future is coming on

Dear Abby Fooled By Simpsons Hoax
Dear Abby has had to pull next Monday's column because evidently she was taken in by a hoaxer who sent in a letter remarkably like the Simpsons episode "Life In the Fast Lane", where Homer gives Marge a bowling ball for her birthday and she meets a suave, handsome stranger at the bowling alley. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time: "Jerry Bruckheimer Films is negotiating a seven-figure deal to acquire the feature film rights to bestselling videogame "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time." Pic is being earmarked as a feature film for Disney. Deal includes a script being penned by game creator Jordan Mechner. John August is exec producing and supervising Mechner on the script. Game, set in 9th century medieval Persia, tells the story of how a young adventurous prince who uncovers a dangerous artifact in a remote mountain kingdom and with the help of an enemy princess, must stop a despot from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy all mankind..."

Who's the princess? I am!
Yeah, now that I am the sole employee of Miranet, B has taken it upon himself to be my buddy. I almost started feeling bad for him today because he is trying so hard. He came in and plopped down in my spacious office (the whole back room is MINE for now - Mwuhahahaha!) and said something to the effect of "how's it goin' my friend? Tell me all about your problems."

*ahem*

Yeah, I am the princess, and I am still leaving. They don't deserve me.

Lyrics: 'Cosmic Girl' - Jamiroquai
I must have died and gone to heaven
Cos it was a quarter past eleven
On a Saturday night in 1999

Right across from where I'm standing
On the dance floor she was landing
It was clear that she was from another time

Like some baby Barbarella
With the stars as her umbrella
She asked me if I?d like to magnetise

Do I have to go star - trekking
Cos it's you I should be checking
So she lazer beamed me with her cosmic eyes

She's just a cosmic girl
From another galaxy
My heart's at zero gravity

She's from a cosmic world
Putting me in ecstasy
Transmitting on my frequency

She's cosmic

I'm scanning all my radars
Well she said she's from a quasar
Forty thousand million light years away

It's a distant solar system
I tried to phone but they don't list 'em
So I asked her for her number all the same

She said, "Step in my transporter
So I can teleport ya
All around my heavenly body"

This could be a close encounter
I should take care not to flounder

Sends me into hyperspace
When I see her pretty face

And a dark cloud loomed in the distance
Satan called.

"Hey, I have a job offer for a bay area with a law firm that has offices all over. Should I go San Jose, or Sacramento?"

"Um, I think you would be happier in Sacramento."

"Why? We could hang out on the weekends and cook and stuff..."

(in my head) "COOK?!?!? I lived in your house for the better part of 17 years and NEVER saw you cook ANYTHING!!!"

(out loud) "That's not going to happen."

"Ok then, I will talk to the rest of the family, and I have a meeting with them today so I'll let you know."

"OK, bye."

Yesterday was surreal
I got up Saturday morning to the most beautiful day is a really long time. I was going to Sacramento to visit the cuz and help her w/ wedding stuff.

The drive was outstanding. It was perfect weather to drive with the heater on slightly and the window down. The hills on the 580 were that perfect shade of green and untouched except for hundreds of awesome windmills all set to a perfectly blue sky. It was like the movie toys...

Chels and I had a great day, I found a maid of honor dress that almost made her cry, and we went from being cousins to being trusted friends over a margurita and a wedding gown. It was cool. Her fiance loves her more than life itself and I feel really happy sending the one other sane person in my family off into the world with him.

The air smelled good.

The birds were happy.

We drove home to her house with a chai and saw the most beautiful sunset and moonrise I have seen in forever - one of those where the moon is all orange and low on the horizon and thanks to the optics of our atmosphere, can grow to 3X it's normal size along a purple skyline.

I came back to see Donnie Darko at Midnight movies and actually stayed awake for the whole thing. Perfect capper to the day.

Hope that you all enjoyed a really nice weekend as well!

APOD
This one is really cool. Long exposures are something I need to play with more...

Wow. That really reminds me of this russian movie my roomates and I watched recently called "Stalker." It's about a zone in russia where everyone was evacuated in the past and nobody goes anymore. It's perfectly quiet and perfectly deadly at the same time. The movie was made in 1979 well before the Chernobyl accident.

More support for my theory on the Germans
BERLIN (Reuters) - A German court rejected a legal bid on Friday by an unemployed man who wanted the state to provide him with free pornography and trips to brothels because his wife is in Thailand.

The court in the southern town of Ansbach ruled that social services did not extend to satisfying the 43-year-old's sexual needs after he attempted to sue his local welfare office because it had refused to finance his appetite for prostitutes and porn.

"He wanted them to pay for four trips to the brothel a month, eight porn films a month, plus condoms," said court spokesman Peter Burgdorf. "He also wanted some sort of appliance for self-gratification to use when watching porn."

The man had earlier asked the Foreign Ministry to fly his wife back from her native Thailand, to which she had returned in 2002, saying that he could not afford the ticket.

"He said he needed the services to keep himself fit and healthy because his wife wasn't available," said Burgdorf. "Now he's planning to contest the decision in the court of appeal."

Hours before the news hit the trades, IGN FilmForce broke the word first that actor Gary Oldman had been cast as Lieutenant Jim Gordon in BATMAN BEGINS. Oldman beat out other rumored contenders such as Chris Cooper, Dennis Quaid and Kurt Russell.

Warner Bros. issued a press release concerning Oldman's casting last night and the news was then picked up by the industry trade magazines today.

Oldman will next be seen as the imprisoned wizard Sirius Black in HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN.

Hmm, that song seems less cool to me when I read the words.

Lyrics: Metallica - Fuel
Gimme fuel
Gimme fire
Gimme that which I desire

Turn on, I see red
Adrenaline crash and crash my head
Nitro junkie, paint me dead
And I see red

one hundred plus through black and white
War horse
War head
Fuck 'em, man
White knuckle tight
Through black and white

Oh, on I burn
Fuel is pumping engines
Burning hard
Loose and clean

Oh, and on I burn
Churning my direction
Quench my thirst with gasoline

So gimme fuel
Gimme fire
Gimme that which I desire

Turn on beyond the bone
Swallow future, spit out home
Burn your face upon the chrome

Take the corner, join the crash
Headlights
Alarms
Another junkie lives too fast

Yeah
Lives way too fast, fast, fast, fast, fast

Oh, on I burn
Fuel is pumping engines
Burning hard, loose and clean

Oh, and on I burn
Turning my direction
Quench my thirst with gasoline

So gimme fuel
Gimme fire
Gimme that which I desire

Oh
Gimme fuel
Gimme fire
My desire

Oh, on I burn
Fuel is pumping engines
Burning hard, loose and clean

On I burn
Churning my direction
Quench my thirst with gasoline

Gimme fuel
Gimme fire
Gimme that which I desire

On I burn

Gellar Open To Angel Gig
Sarah Michelle Gellar, former star of TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, told SCI FI Wire the reasons she reluctantly pulled out of appearing in the Buffy spinoff Angel earlier this season and left open the possibility that she might still make an appearance, if asked, before Angel winds up its fifth and final season this year on The WB. Gellar, speaking for the first time about the issue, said in an interview that she had to bow out of a planned guest appearance on Angel when her aunt died late last year. Gellar spoke to SCI FI Wire during a break in the filming of her new project, the supernatural horror film The Grudge, in Tokyo. [more]

Re: Toaster vs. Toaster Oven
Tom is here today and he gave us a 20 minute discourse on the advantages of the toaster oven in "buzzword". (Imagine, if you will, marrying a peice of your favorite cheese and bread, inserting it into the toaster and waiting for the smoke alarm. Now imagine, the boundless capabilities you would have if you had, say, a "catch all" tray of sorts to retain any rogue cheese or other condiments that should wander away from your prize snacktime delisciousness...)

I am leaning toward the toaster oven as my "toasting solutions provider".

Re: Toaster vs. Toaster Oven
I'm bit biased, but I like toaster ovens. You can cook all sorts of things without heating up the entire oven. I make little personal pizzas, heat up tv dinners, make toasted sandwiches etc. in mine. Pretty much anything you can do in a regular oven, you can do on a smaller scale in a toaster oven. You can get a good one for ~$40 from Target. The drawback (in my understanding) is that a toaster oven probably takes a little longer to actually toast bread than a toaster, since it's got more area that it has to heat.

Neil's silliness for today
Police arrested six shivering protesters on Monday after they braved cool temperatures and staged a nearly naked pillow fight outside Harvard University to promote animal rights.
The five women and one man, members of the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, were arrested on criminal misdemeanor charges, said police spokesman Frank Pasquarello.

"This is nothing compared to what the animals go through," protester Karla Waples, wearing nothing but pasties to cover her nipples and a pair of panties, shouted to reporters as she was led in handcuffs to a waiting police van.

(Neil writes:)
This is the tragedy of being an animal. Most of them never get to have pillow fights. Only a select few coddled pets even have their own pillows. And, outside of the kind of websites that spam-advertise themselves as being a revealing vision of life as it is lived whenever beautiful women visit farms or zoos, I rather doubt any animals get to wear pasties.

I'm just glad our attention has been drawn to this.

Disney agrees to adventure with NARNIA partner
Walt Disney Pictures has entered into another partnership with Walden Media, this time to share some of the production cost and also to distribute the upcoming film adaptation of THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE. Budgeted at around $100 million, the adaptation of C.S. Lewis' childrens fantasy book is slated to commence filming this summer.

Disney and Walden worked a similar deal out for the release of HOLES and GHOSTS OF THE ABYSS, but the NARNIA contract calls for Disney to have the rights to distribute all future NARNIA sequels should they occur. SHREK director Andrew Adamson will helm the first NARNIA movie. A Christmas 2005 release date is being eyed.

Re: Toaster vs Toaster Oven
So I am exploring my toasting options, and I come across this:
3-In-1 Breakfast Station

Wow. cool.

However, Laura brought up the good point that it is like a TV/VCR combo: If one breaks...

*sigh*

Toaster vs Toaster Oven
So apparently, I have some serious lifestyle choices to make here. I was all set to go get a new toaster (I took one look at the inside of mine when I moved and threw it straight out), when my co-workers mentioned that I should get a toaster oven (yes, we really have nothing better to talk about).

I am weighing the compact and cheap toaster against the larger, but muti-snacking potential of the toaster oven now.

Any thoughts?

Daytime TV
Wow. I was at home for lunch and had a couple minutes and flipped on the TV. I haven't seen daytime TV in a long time. It is almost offensive. Here's what I found: Rap videos, self help and excercise videos catering to stay at homers who don't feel good about themselves, Soaps (YUCK), Home improvement TV (which is getting kind of tired), Paige Davis everywhere I turned (she's starting to bug), and this show about two people who broke up some time ago and how they are getting back together through the wonders of TLC.

The History Channel was the only worthwhile TV with a special on Greek architecture and mathematics.

Luckily, KSJO pulled me out of my horror by playing a long block of G&R on my way back to work. There's nothing like a little Axle Rose to brighten up your day!

Cat Burglar Caught Napping on Job
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - A Dutch cat burglar was caught napping on a couch during a nocturnal heist and arrested, police said on Saturday.

The burglar curled up on a couch for a nap in the Rotterdam home he was robbing and was found snoozing by the owners' son, who held the 26-year-old thief while his parents called police.

"It's not very smart to fall asleep in the house you are trying to burgle," a Rotterdam police spokesman said.

So I went home at lunch and watched and episode of Star Trek Next Gen Season 2. (No, that's not the confession!). It was the one where they have a court battle to determine the legal status of Data. Riker ia basically forced to prosecute that Data is just a machine.

Anyway, they at the end, Riker is all sad and Data comes and tells him the he won't forget that Riker was forced to do it and that it hurt Riker. They had a moment and I got all teary eyed about it. That lasted a couple minutes and I realized what I was doing... next stop, long distance commercials.

LITTLE BILLY ON...PHILOSOPHY
A teacher asks her class, "If there are 5 birds sitting on a fence and you shoot one of them, how many will be left?"

She calls on little BILLY. He replies, "None, they will all fly away with the first gunshot."

The teacher replies, "The correct answer is 4, but I like your thinking."

Then little BILLY says, "I have a question for YOU. There are 3 women sitting on a bench having ice cream: One is delicately licking the sides of the triple scoop of ice cream. The second is gobbling down the top and sucking the cone. The third is biting off the top of the ice cream. Which one is married?"

The teacher, blushing a great deal, replies, "Well, I suppose the one that's gobbled down the top and sucked the cone."

To which Little BILLY replied, "The correct answer is 'the one with the wedding ring on,' but I like your thinking."

LITTLE BILLY ON...ENGLISH
Little BILLY goes to school, and the teacher says, "Today we are going to learn multi-syllable words, class. Does anybody have an example of a multi-syllable word?"

BILLY says " Mas-tur-bate."

Miss Rogers smiles and says, "Wow, little BILLY, that's a mouthful."

Little BILLY says, "No, Miss Rogers, you're thinking of a blowjob."
